I just got my 2015 Chrysler Town and Country out of the shop with 70K miles and two months out of the five year warranty program with the dreaded rocker arm ticking issue. This problem is no surprise as their are numerous accounts of others having this same problem with the Pentastar 3.6L engine. The repairs also involved changing all the rockers and the intake camshaft on the #1 bank. The local shop had to call in the local Chrysler dealer to figure out why they could not clear codes after the repairs. Chrysler could not explain or offer a fix. 2000.00 for the repairs and 1200.00 for car rental while the car was in the shop. I'm not nearly as thrilled about these engines as you are. Mr. Lee I hope you will reply to this comment. Thanks.

I love the 3.6 Pentastar. I have a 2016 4 door Jeep Wrangler and it is perfect. Its not lifted or anything but gets 18 mpg on average, 21 on the highway and has plenty of power. Already have 70,000 miles on the Jeep without a single issue.

Had high hopes on what I thought was Chrysler's highest quality engine, the 3.6 liter pentastar in my bought new 2015 Chrysler 200C (ordered new in 2014). Really enjoyed this car and I had very much looked forward to showing that this car could reach over 200,000 miles. After owning the car for 5 years and 126,000 miles, the engine failed. Failed rocker arms, ruined camshaft, causing metal shavings in which ruined a piston wall which also ruined injectors and coils. Complete failure. On top of that, the ZF 9speed was showing signs of imminent failure and a host of other issues with the car. Very disappointed and took a large loss trading it off for a Asian car that is also made in the U.S. Rather than an Italian car made in the U.S. Really wish Chrysler had increased the quality like they had so proudly advertised doing. Common Chrysler, even the lug nuts swelled and had to be replaced on all 4 wheels.

This new updated design seems promising, but does anyone know if all the kinks have been worked out yet?

Can you please do a recall on the 3.6L Pentastar for the common failing rocker arms? My motor just started to develop a tick/tap at around 85k miles. I see there is a star case (S1309000016) on this so you know it’s an issue. I have no codes so the service bulletin (09-002-14 REV. B) on the left cylinder head doesn’t apply but it’s just so coincidental that mine has a failure on that same side. It’s upsetting to read forums, watch videos and chat with other owners that this issue is happening to a wide range of Dodge’s, Chrysler’s and Jeep’s but nothing is being done besides dealers asking for thousands of dollars to fix a known issue. I believe this will be my first and last modern Mopar vehicle even though I was hoping to move into a Gladiator in the next year or so. Id rather stick with Toyota and Lexus as they have stood behind my GX460 and have provided outstanding service and truly has built my customer loyalty since owning the vehicle. I never dread going to their service station as I do with my Jeep.

I listened to Bob's nice sounding video on the 3.6 Pentastar engine. But when the rubber hits the road, the fact is that these engines are notorious for rocker arm failures!!!! These rocker arms fail because of one or more of three causes. #1-defective manufacturing, #2- overloaded stress, or #3- lack of lubrication. After the second rocker arm prematurely failed on my 2013 Dodge Grand Caravan at about 60K miles, I drilled a hole in the oil filter cap and mounted an electric oil pressure switch so that I could monitor what was going on. I switched from 5x20 synthetic oil to 5x30 synthetic oil and I disconnected the wire going to the oil pump solenoid which reduces the oil pressure at normal operating speeds once the engine is warmed up. (The damage was done before I took it apart the second time) Now there is much more oil on the rocker arms and on the cam bearings when I took it apart the second time!! Before at highway speeds the oil pressure was about 25-30 PSI, now it is running at 50-60 PSI at highway speeds. Then the engine light came on steady, so to fool the computer so that the engine light wouldn't come on steady I hooked up another solenoid from a used oil pump by bringing the original wiring up to the top of the engine and mounting the extra solenoid up there. The resistance from the tiny little light bulb in a regular lighted on/off toggle switch gives about the same resistance as the oil pump solenoid, but I never actually tried this kind of a switch instead of another solenoid. I wouldn't want to simply hook up a little pigtail wire to connect the two terminals on the wiring coming from the computer because it may harm the computer. I am very happy with the results of these modifications and I think this will permanently cure my premature failure of the 3.6 rocker arms!! But I won't be responsible for any else's modifications!!

OK, the rocker arms do wear and start ticking. A replacement roller rocker is about $6 at the dealer. The back valve cover is a problem to remove because of a stubborn harness on the back side. Rocker can be removed and replaced without cam removal. 233,000 miles, replaced 2 rockers, oil cooler O rings and thermostat. Runs great and NO oil leaks. Use Penzoil Platinum. 2013 Town and Country, best car I have ever owned, far better than the Honda Odyssey it replaced.
