I entered Air Force Basic Training at Lackland AFB and graduated from Security Police training in October. Arrived Tan Son Nhut March 14, 1969. You could smell Viet Nam in the TWA 707 I was in before it landed! Worked 377th SPS Law Enforcement for the year!

I was there, 72-73 377th SPS. I was assigned to a QRT team. Our V-100 was called Death. It had the Grim Reapor painted on it if anyone that was there can recall that unit?

Amazing that I still find small triggers that hit close so many years later. I arrived just after Tet of '68 and had to evac our C-130's to Cam Ranh for Tet of '69. Cam Ranh was supposedly safer but we were met with ground fire and mortars. The smells barracks rats and orange water of Tan Son Nhut will always be fixed in my memories. My barracks and work shop were at the edge of the flight line so it was always interesting.

A very good friend of mine, Scott Schneider USAF, was there at Tan Son Nhut as Security Police during the Tet. He told me about his times there, showed videos and radio tapes of when they were under fire. Let me know if you might have known him.

My recollection of the first impression of Tan Son Nhut was the smell of a mixture of hot mold combined with jet fuel.I served two years as heavy radar repairman at 619 TCS. Interesting times for a young man.

having served for my country back in the 80's i can fully relate to what these people are saying. the look in their eyes and you know they have seen stuff you have little idea about. i joined to go to the Falklands and was full of the fighting stuff, or so i thought. i never got to go over there but instead ended up in Ireland! my DS said i would either not come back or come back a changed person. but still, i came back so thats a good thing. but you never forget about it, no matter how long ago it was.

There was a large contingent of African Americans stationed at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. I'm disappointed you couldn't find one for this forum.

The Army personnel organized the interviews, which were based on how close they were to the shooting location. Maybe another round of interviews is in order?

Certainly plan to. This particular one was part of a project we did for a US Army Band. We've got another topic that we will do in this style. Working on pre-production for it now. This kind if interview style is really nice, we think.

I was there as a USAF pilot 1968/69 for one year. I remember more than all those guys, but what is the point ? We were run out of there in the end . All of our sacrifices of men and equipment were squandered by Johnson and Mcnamara trying to run a far off war from their desks in DC . They restricted our tactical capabilities with their inane ROE . Let our Generals fight the wars , they are there and involved 24/7 with real time assessments by commanders of what is needed then and there. Enough said....
