I always thought Penny was right up there as far as physical comedy goes with the likes of Lucille Ball and Carol Burnett....PLUS...she ended up showing The Hollywood Suits just how it's done Behind The Camera and all doing this in her big brother's shadow! She was a Treasure to be sure!

Penny's 1 st name Carole was after that great comedian, actress Carole Lombard who died in a plane crash on a War Bond tour (WW 2). My name is Carole (born 1943), & remember at 7, wishing I was named after Carole Lombard also (Carol with an e, Carole). I asked my mother, with shoulders happily high if I was named after her. My shoulders sank as she said, no, I just like that name. Glad to have learned Penny was Carole Penny - she deserved the honor.

@Hammerschlägen M Please consider revising your comment. Being thought of as Jewish is not an insult and in this context is meant as a compliment. The post says "wonderful person." Penny Marshall and her brother have joshed about passing as Jewish from the Bronx in some interview too. Penny Marshall was married to Rob Reiner who adopted her daughter too, but didn't convert.

There are some beautiful pics of her online when she was young. It's hard to believe, how ppl can change so drastically as they age. It shows that just because someone achieves health and beauty and financial success, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're well inside. That emotional ill health invariably shows up in older age. Some say it's just what old age does, but that's not really true, and genetics is way less significant than they say. Our ills are rooted in our emotional health. Diabetes, it's about an inability to get that "sweetness," symbolic of love. She smoked, that's a wicked addiction, but ultimately it's slow suicide... Like most of us, she didn't deal with her pain in a healthy way. But it doesn't go away, and it's powerful. You can only ignore/suppress it for so long, and then it'll destroy you. They're now saying we have the potential to live to at least 150, so she was still young. We need to get over our ignorance and shame about our emotions, and getting "therapy." Most of us need it, and would live longer and happier lives, if we'd at least acknowledge, respect, learn how to express our emotional pain, heal the trauma. You can't really swallow it or laugh it away.
