    When people go to a theater setting you can be told anything. You are paying your money to be entertained. Those on stage are actors and entertainers. You know that coming in. If they say they are reading your mind, there is nothing wrong with that. If you do not have intelligence enough to know they are lying then that is on you. It is totally different when they prey on your loss of a loved one, or a tragedy in your life or your insecurities or beliefs etc. & scam you out of money by trickery in a public or private setting.

    Atheism doesn't make a claim to be skeptical about. Atheism is the rejection of the claim that a god, or gods, exist. Atheism is Not the claim that there is no god. Agnosticism answers the question of what you know, where as atheism answers answers the question of what you believe. They are totally unrelated.

  • @craigkdillon

    @@BeeEatingOrchid Disagree. Atheism rejects the idea of Gods without proof. Their non-existence cannot be proved, so that premise is taken on faith. To me, Atheism rests on a point of faith, as does Deism. Therefore, I reject both. Agnosticism says that knowledge of the existence OR non-existence of Gods are BOTH un-knowable. Hence, Agnosticism's claim of not knowing about Gods. We don't just claim we don't know -- we also claim that such knowledge BY ANYBODY is unknowable.

  • @BeeEatingOrchid

    @BeeEatingOrchid

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@craigkdillon yes, but almost everything is unknowable. You don't know that there isn't a miniature purple elephant in the center of our galaxy. If I asked you if you believed there was one, would you say you're agnostic about it? Or would you just say no? I don't understand why it's any different when talking about a being that is infinitely more complex than an elephant. I mean, we at least have evidence that elephants exist. If you don't actively hold the belief that there is a god, then you are by definition an atheist. You're agnostic too, but you're agnostic about almost everything, so it's an irrelevant definition that doesn't say anything about your beliefs. Who on this planet actually *knows* that there isn't a Batman? I neither believe there is, or isn't, a creator. It just irritates me when people seem to think I make the claim that there is no god. I don't. Atheism makes zero claims. It's not a belief system, it's a lack of belief. You also would fall under the definition of atheism if you don't actively believe in theistic claims.

    Penn is a smart guy but to suggest that someone is irrelevant because they were influenced by someone else is a bit idiotic. Beethoven was influenced by Mozart. Van Gogh was influenced by Monet. The Beatles were influeneced by Little Richard. Yet none of them did work like their inspiration -- and that includes Guns and Roses. Meanwhile, the Velvet Underground were pretentious psuedo artsy crap by people who really can't sing and really can't play. Now if he likes them, he likes them and that's fine. But those comments were coming from a perspective of severe ignorance.

  • @zargmatt1051

    @zargmatt1051

    8 жыл бұрын

    Nelson Montana Well, as a musician I can tell you that playing either Guns & Roses or the Velvet Underground makes little difference, as they are all skilled musicians. I will agree that Slash is a special kind of awesome, but so too is Lou Reed. VU is just deconstructing music and playing minimalism, which might be the only assessment of skill that can be made, which would be in error. It's entirely subjective because you're merely comparing stylistic concerns. Little sounds that amount to nothing more than your affilinity for one popular sound versus another. I'd say Guns & Roses is just as pretentious with their lame cover songs and senimentality, walking on water playing guitar in the rain? It makes me laugh how cheesy they are. But si much of what we like is simply Slash, you know. Just like Reed left the VU and did his solo thing because he was so awesome. Saying it's "shit" is your opinion and not a critical assessment. I don't think either qualifies as shit because they're good musicians and I can only say something is shit if they suck as musicians. But it's okay, one day you will awake from your pop culture sleep and realize the general equality between the musical genres; that the only major difference is the style and the sounds each group chooses to employ. You hear a sound that you have a sentimental attachment to, and somehow consider that sound to be superior. Sentimental attachment is just fine but that's pretty much all it is.

    I wonder if Penn has ever tried DMT. He said unless there’s a shared reality, it’s just fantasy (summed up). Many many many people have reported similar trips on DMT, so much so that we’ve categorized the DMT entities by name. Also plenty of visionary art out there that describes a vision that almost anyone that’s been to "the other side" has seen. Look up Alex Grey’s work to see what I’m talking about. I love Penn and Teller but they’re just 2 opinions in this world. Amazing people though.

    I'm a skeptic. However I believe, skepticism goes in both directions. We can not be sure that the idea of a God, be it a personal god or a faceless god above human comprehension, is complete bollocks. I think that a God might very well exist. Is it the Christian God? No. The Jewish God? Uh-uh. Amaterasu, the highest God of Japanese faith? Yea, no. I doubt that, if there is such a thing as a "Creator" or "Supreme Being" (let's refrain from using the term "God") that he is anything like the Gods in our religions. I can not proof that there is a God and I don't mean to, as I am not religious. However, until there is unbeatable proof that shows that there is, in fact, NO SUCH THING as a God, it is still a possibility. Until I have proof that a God-like Being does not exist I will fist-fight these atheists, because I hate their stupid elitist stick. They could be focusing on something else but instead they disparage people who may think outside of the box. You won't believe how often I was called "stupid" by some atheists just because I bring forth the possibility that a God might exist. Yet these people see no problem in believing in Parallel Dimensions, which, in my opinion, is just as farfetched as the idea of a Creator.

    That is completely true. That is why a lot of thinkers and scientists aren't atheists, but agnostics.

    Scientific skepticism only goes both ways for a while. Once the consensus among the scientific community goes past 51%, the people in the minority start to become deniers. They are now denying the science.

    The Drunken Coward so someone has to prove to you that something doesnt exist until you believe it yet require no proof that something does exist to believe it exist...hmm...i dont think you know what skepticism means. it means believe something based on evidence. the (if i can channel my inner dawkins) preponderance of evidence shows that the world as we know if was not created thru supernatural means. so you can fist fight atheist all you want doesnt make you right

    But... You are stupid. You don't get to call yourself a skeptic, then say something as asinine as "I can't disprove it, therefore we shouldn't discourage people from believing in it". I can't provide absolute proof that there aren't invisible, silent fairies controlling my every move by whispering spells in my ear, but to suggest that it's ok for me to believe that is ludicrous. Allowing such irrational thought to persist is an insult to the intelligence of human beings, and it's that kind of thinking that has halted scientific progress over the past two thousand years.

    Well you're right and wrong at the same time. Yes we can't prove that there is - no god - just like no one can prove that there is - a god. So far you're right and we can't completely dismiss the posibilities - I'm going with you so far. But now here is the catch: If you believe in something - thats fine. As soon as you start claiming it's true - you have to prove it. Why? Because if you can't prove it - you can't claim it to be true - because you can't determine it's value in the first place. So if you say "there might be a god" - ok that's your belief, it's only pointing out a possibility, a thought. If you say "there IS a god" - you're no longer in the realm of possibilities but in the realm of boolean values - and these are either true or false and you can't claim them to be true without showing that they're not false -that's how science works. If this wouldn't be the case the scientific world would be a total mess. If I can claim that you're not yourself but you're controlled by invisible kobolds from the unicorn dimension - and you have to deal with the consequences because you can't DISPROVE it - imagine the posssibilities. That is why crimes have to be PROVEN not DISPROVEN. Oh and I got a fun scenario to think about: Person A believes in a person named "John", he not only believes in John, he actually sees John, hears John, feels John, smells John and could even taste John. Person B believes in a person named "Jesus", he only believes in Jesus, he can not see Jesus, nor hear Jesus, nor feel Jesus, nor smell or taste Jesus. Both - Person A and Person B - run around and tell their friends, family, people at work and strangers about their "friends" and how real they are. Which person - "John" or "Jesus" - would you see as "more real" in this scenario? John: can be seen, heard, felt, tasted, smelled - by 1 person. Jesus: can be seen, heard, felt, tasted, smelled - by 0 persons. And now take a guess: Which person - A or B - is bound to get medication if he continues to talk about his friend.

    Pen is seriously misguided, maybe, he's been inhaling too much red nail polish. Skepticism and atheism are not the same, otherwise, scripture would not tell us to be skeptical in our speech. “Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.” ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭4:6‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Define salt; a : an ingredient that gives savor, piquancy, or zest : flavor b : sharpness of wit : pungency c : common sense d : reserve, skepticism -usually used in the phrases with a grain of salt and with a pinch of salt e : a dependable steadfast person or group of people -usually used in the phrase salt of the earth

    NotNewsChannel Exactly, and according to Strong's Concordance, it most directly means prudence. Proverbs 14:15 "The simple believeth every word: but the prudent man looketh well to his going." 2 Timothy 2:15 "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."

    Was an atheist funny few will know the correlation with religion and magic. Irony Penn is wrong people will always believe in God because enlightenment is the final stage regardless of what timeline or society. But if Penn doesn’t know the correlations of Magic and what he speaks for a certain small group not just magicians but those that know and are intuitive enough to know about the correlations with religion.
