Спорт

This video shows the complete take apart and servicing of a classic Penn Long Beach 68 fishing reel that came to the shop with a broken gear side plate. This service procedures applies to all Long Beach models. The 68 was the largest in this series, but mechanically is very similar to the others.

Great job Dennis! I've had a Penn 67 Long Beach and the Penn Black Senator 4/0 reels in the past. These are great reels, especially for Party Boat fishing. The Penn 67 Long Beach and the Black Penn 4/0 Senator reels, to my memory, are almost identical. The only exceptions are the exterior beauty rings and a "Beefier" Main Gear. in the Penn Senator Black 4/0. The Low Gear Ratio in these reels gives more torque to land those beasts.

Yes - you are correct on the 67 versus the 4/0. Basically the same reel - Thanks for the additional information - Dennis

At the Pacific Coast Sportfishing Show today, both Daiwa and Penn Reps loved your work on my Daiwa 7850RL Spinning Reel and the Penn 704Z both made likely before the Reps were born! But I did pick up a Spinning Rod to match the 7850 rl.. Daiwa.Proteus WN 76HFS and the reel balances perfectly.

First of all, you do an amazing job working on a reel and allowing the viewer to see what you’re doing. I know from my own reel work that it must be very difficult to do this. Talking about parts on eBay - did I tell you I recently bought a lot of 6 NOS Daiwa 7000C handles. I’m going to experiment with mounting a power knob on one of these handles. With four 7000C reels I thought having some spare handles was a good idea. Also I wasn’t going to risk any of the original handles by drilling them out for a power knob. Now I can experiment. You have totally restored this Penn. it is beautiful now and fully functional. I had to reset the concentric spring on my Daiwa 8700 while I was servicing it. I got it all back together and then that spring popped loose inside the reel so I had to do it all over again. I know it won’t pop out anymore now. -- Chris

Thanks Chris. yes, the angles make it cumbersome at times, but I am trying to show more of the service to the folks - Best wishes - Dennis

It came out great and the new spool has 300 yards of Green Maxima Monofilament and ready for Channel Islands once Rockfishing opens up after 3/1.

Finally Penn Reps said to get the Carnage III for the older big spinning reels...make sure it has the "S" designation....CARBWIII50100S802... This refers to what modern Penn Rod will still seat a Penn 704z reel. We tested the reel you serviced and it fits snug on this Penn Rod...

I don't know how many of those dog springs litter my workshop floor, once they fly you'll never find them again! I do know that some of my older Penn's use the flat AR spring, are the coil springs interchangeable with their matching dog in those reels? and why do some reels use the flat as opposed to the coil? You've probably covered this topic in a past video, if so could you direct me. Thanks again Dennis!

The springs and side plates are not interchangeable. The flat spring reels were the original set ups. They were replaced by the coil spring in most reels in 1957, so if you have a flat spring set up, except in the larger Senators, chances are that the reel was prior to 1958. The side plates to support the different springs were changed as well. The flat springs have a post. the coils have a cavity. If you want to change the spring set up, you need to change the side plate as well Thanks - Dennis
