what is that little shaft in front of the arrow on the bow? I notice that athletes shoot as soon as the shaft passes in front of the arrow

It's a clicker, essentially a strip of metal that'll slap against the riser once the arrow clears it. It helps an archer know that they've reached a consistent draw length to then release the arrow.
