Penarth Dock, the staion and the strange halt at Llandough

Ғылым және технология

A look at the disused station at Penarth Dock, a brief histiory of the docks and the odd tale of the short lived station at Llandough. And I do know they are just outside Cardiff, but I'm counting them!

Thanks Bob, for this inspiring story. I am looking forward to visiting my childhood playground Penarth later this year having migrated down under back in 1967. How things have changed since the days when I could hitch a naughty ride to Lavernock in the engine room of the old steam trains.

When I first lived in Penarth in 1963 there was still enough traffic at Llandough sidings and Penarth dock that a pilot loco was stationed there. It also got occasional use banking the rare freight trains up the bank to Penarth. The tunnel between the stations was still open then.

I can remember sitting in my post office van having lunch and watching them fill in Penarth dock in the 70s, (I only took photos in those days when I went on holiday lol ) what a lot of people may not realise is that the dock was about twice the size it is now and used to go all the way to to where the Oystercatcher pub is today

I remember a friend talking about the ships that were stored in there that they used to play on. As you say it was a big space.

Brilliant video thanks Bob. I work on the trains now and was told that there used to be a station opposite Cogan and quite often stand at that signal waiting at Cogan Junction to rejoin the line to Cardiff. Amazing to see.

About the time of the Ely Tidal Harbour & Railway Company appeared on the scene, noting its link with the Taff Vale line. Something very significant occurred about that time, and there exists compelling evidence of this for all who care to find it.

Nice one, Bob. I remember the Penarth Dock station, but I did not know there had been one at Llandough. I wonder if it served the nearby Llandough Hospital? The Ely river has fair sized tide movements (nearly went aground in my boat once) so it might have affected port operations. The beach at Penarth is covered with pebbles and always has been within my memory, but I did once see an old GWR poster advertising Penarth's golden sands so something must have changed before I was born- perhaps the dock construction altered the sea currents? Looking forward to your e-bike ride along the railway path.

Llandough was such an odd choice for a station. It's a fair trek up the hill to the hospital and village. I can only ever remember Penarth with pebbles, I think the GWR advertising people may have been employing some poetic license! Thanks for watching

I used to go with family to Penarth in the 1950's!!! No sign of "golden sands" Bit of mud under the stones, but no golden sands.

Llandough hospital didn't open until 1930 so the halt was long gone then.

Did the Barry line connect to the Taff Vale at Cogan Junction in 1888? The original Cogan branch of the Barry Railway terminated there when services began in December 1888. The through service to Cardiff Riverside did not begin until August 1893 but it's possible that the connection existed before then.

I have saved this for another time. I have a problem with Google. Every single time 'Updating your typing experience' until there is 'Insufficient internal data' and the whole thing stops. If anyone else viewing this has the same let me know if you know how to stop it.

I don't have that particular problem, but if you are using an older machine, a clean-up of the memory (particularly the amount of memory used in cache) and removal of unused programs might help, . There are some useful guides on KZread and it helped to prolong the life of my old laptop, until I could get a new one. Liron Segev has a useful channel, but there are others.
