That's funny right up 'til you realize that there is a reason that it is included in the safety pages. In school, my son's classmate, probably about 14 years old, dripped a bit of solder on his arm. Rather than removing it, or asking for help, he decided that the best course of action would be to place the iron on the solder to try to melt it off of his skin . . . Those people are in society with us.

@@scootskute Yup, it's scary sometimes. I worked at a KFC as a kid. Had a co-worker who had a small fire break out in her pressure fryer. Rather than put the lid down and smothering the flames, she forgot ALL her training and tossed a bunch of flour on top....then, when the predictable happened, ran to the ice machine and grabbed a big bucket of crushed ice. The manager had to physically tackle her to the floor and restrain her to keep a catastrophe from happening.

30 years ago in a home ec class the class clown picked up an iron and asked “is this on?” and then proceeded to stick his tongue to it... he burned his tongue and had to go to emergency room. He then had a swollen tongue and was unable to eat solid foods for like 2 weeks while his tongue healed. That one incident caused him to grow up more than anything else in his life.

My Home Ec teacher always insisted that we use the back burners and keep the handles turned to the side when cooking. She said that toddlers sometimes reached up and pulled pots onto them. A few years ago I was using a computer at the library and my old Home Ec teacher was a couple of computers over. A young Mother sat down between us with a toddler that had a bandaged head and arm. I guess I looked a little too hard, the Mother said that the kid pulled a pot of boiling pasta onto herself. Later, I thanked my teacher, because I always followed her rules, even before we had kids.

The advice provided by my treadmill manufacturer (not Pelaton) was to remove the safety key and unplug the treadmill when not in use. That advice was not just to protect third parties but to prevent any electrical surge from destroying the electronics. The manual also recommended that children not “use or play” on the treadmill whether the unit is plugged in or not. (“It is not a toy”). I follow the advice in the manual.

My parents had a treadmill when my brother and I were little. We used to play on it all the time while they were at work or whatever, and we never got sucked under, our pets never got hurt or killed, because no child or pet is small enough to get sucked under a 3 inch gap...and other treadmill companies don't seem to be having this amount of child or pet injuries/death associated with their treadmills, because they don't build them high enough off the ground. There seems to be something about the design of this specific treadmill that makes it more dangerous than other treadmills.

I own a treadmill and I'm going to have to say this particular issue is going to be a thing for any treadmills that don't have some sort of guard on the rear end. It would probably be best if they all had a rear guard. On the other hand, there's no reason not to treat the massive peice of machinery with respect it deserves. Fun fact: my treadmill doc says to attach the safety key to ones waist so if you uh...unexpectedly dismount the key is pulled out and it shuts off.

The single best warning label I have ever seen was on a Swedish branded chainsaw (so I am guessing a literal translation) which read "Do not stop chain with hands or genitals". I am assuming this actually meant "Don't hold the chain in your hands or between your legs while it is running" but I personally like the actual warning instead.

I remember my mom had an old treadmill probably from the 90s, and it had this WONDERFUL safety measure, called an end cap which made it quite literally impossible to get 'sucked under' the treadmill If you could work something under the cover, there was more space under the treadmill tread than under the 'shielding' so if something was thin enough to get under the covers, it couldnt be touching both the treadmill and ground at the same time.

That guard can cause more damage than getting pulled underneath. If you get pulled underneath the whole thing will come off the ground and you will only bear the weight of the machine. If your 16 or older that probably not going to injure you. That's why it's not for children to play with. If your pants or shoe lace gets caught between the belt and the guard your talking about the machine will try and suck you between the belt and the guard which can cause severe crush injuries because you can't fit between the two. It could snap an ankle leg or anything that stops as the clothes or shoelace continues to be pulled in. If you let children play on it they can be thrown off the edge and snap their neck or suffer from any number of injuries regardless of how much safety is added. You simply do not let children play with tools, they are not toys.

I don't think so but then again someone ordered coffee at McDonald's and spilled it on them and sued McDonald's because it was hot and they got burned. I thought everyone knew coffee was usually hot, guess not. People need to grow up and take responsibility for their actions and stop blaming everyone else.

  • @Kahnanesgi

    3 жыл бұрын

@@tomwest8663 McDonald paid a lot of money for a PR spin that cast the coffee cases as a type spurious and a money grab or the consumer fault and it was money well spent it seems from your comment. but the facts are that that coffee was not just “hot,” but dangerously hot. McDonald’s corporate policy was to serve it at a temperature that could cause serious burns in seconds. Mrs. Liebeck’s injuries were far from frivolous. She was wearing sweatpants that absorbed the coffee and kept it against her skin. She suffered third-degree burns (the most serious kind) and required skin grafts on her inner thighs and elsewhere. She was not driving. She was parked and putting cream/sugar in when it tipped, accidentally, into her lap. Liebeck’s case was far from an isolated event. McDonald’s had received more than 700 previous reports of injury from its coffee, including reports of third-degree burns, and had paid settlements in some cases. Mrs. Liebeck offered to settle the case for $20,000 to cover her medical expenses and lost income. But McDonald’s never offered more than $800, so the case went to trial. McDonald’s admitted it had known about the risk of serious burns from its scalding hot coffee for more than 10 years. The risk had repeatedly been brought to its attention through numerous other claims and suits. McDonald’s operations manual required the franchisee to hold its coffee at 180 to 190 degrees Fahrenheit. Coffee at that temperature, if spilled, causes third-degree burns in three to seven seconds. So to answer your question: It's complicated. Each case is going to be different and I'm most certainly not a lawyer. But if there are enough cases happening to show that there is an issue then the company can be, I think, held liable if there are reasonable safety measures that were omitted in interest of lower costs and higher profits. After all it was Ford who knew that the Pinto could explode under rare circumstances and decided it was cheaper to pay out damages if a car did blow up rather than go in and fix it. My cheap 30 dollar space heater has a tilt switch so I don't burn my house down. My hair dryer has overheat protection to keep the motor from burning out and if by some freak chance an errant strand of my hair gets pulled into the fan it sees the motor speed change out of bounds and breaks the circuit. My table saw has some nifty switch that will instantly shut the motor down and shunt the blade under the work surface in milliseconds if it touches something fleshy rather than cutting off a finger. In the video I saw in the article, I saw the back of the treadmill lift up off the floor and it continued running. That is, IMO, unacceptable. Does it make them liable? that's a Jury's decision. But now that they are aware of the issues, if they don't make changes, I'd say yes it would going forward. (edit: for typo and dropped word)

Hi, i dont know how many safety features the Peloton has, but by steves comments on the screen etc it has some high tech in it. Maybe it needs like a small radar of the screen to ensure some one is there But my parents have a machine with a little magnetic switch on a cord / laynard if you fall of it stops, if you move the magnet switch from the green square it stops The video in question with the kids has no adult supervision and it is running all the time, so i guess the safety switch is on all the time. Most people will point the finger at the parents , instructions, no one really reads them, warning stickers, yeah they are pretty colour, but these things are not toys - even toys are dangerous when unsupervised or with little kids To me, it should be a hazard warning video to people ( parents ) rather than a video directed hinting lawsuit to Pelodon for unsafe product.

I just looked under my Nordic Track treadmill that is about 12 years old. By the way, this is my 3rd one as I wore the other 2 out. It has a good foot of exposed returning belt underneath before a support bar blocks the return belt, but then it is open all the way to the motor housing in the front. Something easily could get caught and pulled under from the sides or back if it was running. My feelings on this is operators error. You don't stand behind a backing up car and expect to sue the car manufacturer. The people need to take responsibility for controlling the actions around themselves and or their children and pets. I don't have children, but when on the treadmill, I keep my pets far away as I can. Again, take responsibility for your surrounding area and quit blaming everyone else for your own inadequacies. I've been working on exercise equipment for 15+ years. Peleton isn't the only manufacturer that has this type of design. I can tell you that most people don't follow the manufacturers instructions. Most people don't even read the warning labels on the side of the equipment. Compare this to the Cybex lawsuit years ago. Their "Eagle" line of strength equipment had a high center of gravity so they warned that all equipment MUST be bolted to the floor. When a personal trainer inevitably pulled one over on herself causing permanent paralysis you would think the installer or the facility owner would have been held mostly responsible, but it was Cybex. The final value of the suit after all the appeals wound up being over $90,000,000 with Cybex being held 90% responsible.

Since the peloton tread+ isn't just a belt, but more like segments of a moving walkway if that's making it more of a problem. I wonder if when the segments separate and close if that's causing things to get grabbed when it pinches closed after the bend makes it more likely to get pulled under without a guard than other belt based ones.

I just looked at pictures of a Peloton treadmill and it would appear that there is a large clearance space between the floor and the underside of the belt. The actual design seems minimalist to the extreme yet the price is in excess of 5,000 GBP I assume that is for the fancy electronic panel and package in the machine. How something or someone could get dragged under seems difficult to work out unless they got something caught within the rotating belt. May be this is more a case of people not using their common sense whilst operating the machine. Tragic as a child's death is the actual circumstances need to be investigated before blaming the manufacturer. I agree with Steve that both Peloton and the Feds need to communicate with each other to get to the root of the problem without issuing blanket demands for a recall or ban.

  • @Scott_Burton
    @Scott_Burton Жыл бұрын

Simple version of a fix for the treadmill. You insert the key, it starts up normally. If you're not on it for a period of 60 seconds, the key relay resets to off. You have to turn it to the start position again to run. It would be like an ignition in a car that turns off the engine if you leave it in the run position but in park without pressure on the brake. [No, I'm not suggesting that for cars, but it's the easiest analogy I can draw] The key has 3 positions off, run and start. The motor starts the treadmill when there's more than 40 lbs on the treadmill and the key moves to the start position. When you release the key it defaults to the "run" position, if the weight on the treadmill is under 40 lbs for more than 60 seconds, the motor switches off. To restart the motor, you step up onto the treadmill and turn the key again to the start position. Safety wise: The treadmill will not start with less than 40 lbs load, anyone who should be using it should be well over 40 lbs, and if it's left without a 40+lbs load for 60 seconds, it simply turns off the motor. takes a fraction of a second to restart, but if you're off of it for 60 seconds, you've stopped running. Additional bonus, harder to accidentally start, and will shut off on its own if you get a knock at the door then forget it's running. Just saying, safety features can be easily implemented. Another would be don't leave the belt exposed in such a way as to pull things under it.

Our Nordic Track treadmill has a key but also a steel bar across under the roller so nothing can jam in there. From an engineering liability standpoint they would be required to design the treadmill and provide safety features consistent with the “state of the art” of similar products. “State of the art” meaning “what is the norm” not the best possible newest idea ever. It seems they have done so, in combination with the necessary warnings. The state of the art can and does charge over time (ie seatbelts, airbags, etc.). There would have to be something inherently more dangerous with their treadmill versus treadmills in general.

I can see both sides of the argument here. Almost any large exercise equipment could cause serious injury if misused, malfunctioned, worn out, or if children are left unattended around it. Exercise equipment may have bands under high tension, heavy weights that could crush body parts, and motorized moving parts that pass into constricted spaces. No matter how safe the product is designed, there will likely be some inherent risk of injury. On the design issues, the Peloton treadmills do not appear to be markedly dissimilar from other treadmills on the market, so they'd have to litigate if the design is actually more or less prone to cause injury from misuse and how Peloton has mitigated or responded to design flaws in the past. If Peloton is aware the key is being left in their machine they could redesign it so the key must be reinserted if the machine has been inactive for a period of time. With the pandemic, in addition to more people buying/using home exercise equipment, more children are at home due to distance learning and reduced nanny/daycare/afterschool services. Thus, there are likely more people using their equipment when their children are around and more chances children may be left unattended or left ill-supervised (e.g. monitored by older children).

You're explanation of how kids get pulled under the treadmill is correct. What you are missing is that on some treadmills their is a stationary bar that goes across the read of the treadmill band so that while it might be possible for you to get your finger pulled inbeween the bar and the treadmill band you could not get a child or pet pulled under the treadmill. The other design problem with the Peloton version is the height of the treadmill off the floor, some other treadmills are not raised as high off the floor again making it less likely for any hildes head to be pulled under it. And finally if you look at the distance between the top and bottom of the treadmill band the peloton version is about 6 to 8 inches others are as short was 2 inches, why does that matter? well at the end where the treadmill band goes down before going under the peloton has several times as much surface area going down which means it will be easier for it to pull someone or something down into the real danger area. If you look at the peloton compared to other treadmills it really isn't designed for safety the other treadmills are. Any of them can be dangerous and if you research the injuries they are not reserved to children, adults have also fall on the things and then gotten their hand and arm pulled under the treadmill.

As a lot of people say "Nanny State". How much must the State do to protect idiots from injuring themselves or others after they have been warned? No different from being told not to "drink and drive" yet how many people get injured and killed each year?

G.E. was told to issue a recall on Electric Stoves. Parents pretending they don't have children, have had children injured by the stove. "I should be allowed to drink my wine without my kids burning themselves!" A mother says.

Imagine the sales potential of any kind of stovetop which had a "deadperson" button requiring the user to hold the button down to continue heating (sarcasm). In today's "smart" appliance, interconnected world you'd need to swipe your Real ID 18 card & let a sensor compare biometrics on file to prove you are over or whatever.

There are several easy fixes Peloton can make to improve the safety of their product. Add a guard to the side and rear, add a pin code to start the treadmill, or start the program before activating the treadmill. They want the treadmill to look cool and techie with only the most basic safety features. A treadmill with only basic safety features works in a gym setting, but not in the living room or bedroom in a house with kids and pets.

you indicated there was a clip, likely a nanny cam. 1) why do you have a nanny cam pointing at a tread mill? 2) what about the footage before the incident? who turned it on? the kids or an adult that left and did not turn it off. I do have a treadmill, ProForm. We have a safety key. It is always on the system, and my wife connect to it when she runs, I do not (run or use the safety key)

Love the George Carlin reference at the end 😂 What does it mean to pre-board? Do you get on before you get on? That’s another complaint if mine, too much use of this prefix pre it’s all over the language now, pre this, pre that, place the turkey in a pre-heated oven, it’s ridiculous there are only two states an oven can exist in, heated or unheated, pre-heated is a meaningless f***ing term, it’s like pre-recorded, this show was pre-recorded, well of course it was when else are you going to record it afterwards 😂😂

On every mower that I have ever owned or used, I put a zip tie or piece of wire loosely on the deadman lever. It can be slid to the side when I want to shut it off. Its tiring enough to mow in Florida summers without pullstarting the mower every time I need to stop to move something. Somehow, I manage to resist the temptation to touch the spinny sharp thing on the bottom.
