I wouldn’t call Peeta “Feminine” just because he’s not egotistical. Him main ability is brute strength. His main goal, protection. He’s fundamentally masculine, just n a gentler way.

@@theartofnarrative like Katniss in a way. She comes off more masculine at first, because she’s very dry and not sweet or delicate. But she is fundamentally feminine. Her survival tactics are all about cunning rather than brute strength, and her motivation for everything isn’t her country, it’s not the rebellion, it’s her sister. She’s very protective of children in general, thus how she protects Rue.

I think its ok to draw this parallel of Peeta expressing a feminine role throughout the narrative. The whole book/movie has lots of examples of breaking gender norms, and Peeta is often put in the traditional role of the "Damsel in Distress", and that is not a random choice. In the end, thats exactly the critic, he can be masculine, but also be shaped by female traits, as most usually portraied. Well, at least its how I felt about it when I read/watched the books/films.

I think what makes him so great of a character is because it’s different than the traditional strong male character. He’s strong in a different way. His personality and empathy is just 💯

This!! Katniss and Peeta almost have an opposite relationship than traditional gender roles. Katniss is the “provider” who neglects her feelings and has strengths physically, while Peeta is the complete opposite. By the end of the story, he balances Katniss out. So cool.

Katniss is the perfect example of learning to love what’s good for you even if initially there isn’t crazy chemistry and butterflies

At least when reading and watching I think their was chemistry and butterflies. Peetas melts her walls. Gale never did. She was able to be open with Peeta since day one. Yes it wasn't passion but she allowed herself to let herself fall in love then write it off as she was doing it for survival. Reading the books she didn't need Gale as much as I read into the movie. He just was there when her dad died and both trama bonded. She starts caring for Peeta early on. They are a team almost initially. That is love....maybe not passion or burning love but love. Then eventually they have passion but passion for each other not passion like fire in a pan. Gale is a I had a crush on him for years because he was the only one I could open up about my missing my father and parentification. But he never shows love. He is that guy you get a crush on because he was the guy that caught you when you tripped in the lunch room and then you ignore the red flags because you already decided you liked them. The only reason I clarify is I am feeling "no one puts baby in a corner" about saying she settled for who would be good for her. Peetas is what I would hope my son's would grow up to be. Strong physically, mentally, and emotionally.

@@rachelm2657 no I absolutely don’t think she settled in any way for peeta, as I don’t believe any women settles when we learn to love what’s good for us. I think often times we hear of the butterflies and fireworks so that’s what we look for “love at first site” but it’s not love. We often rely heavily on immediate physical attraction and the relationship fizzles out when we realize that person isn’t compatible with us. Peeta from the start is the right person for her. she just needed to learn that. It’s like the bad boy vs the good guy often times women choose the bad boy because of the excitement knowing the good guy is better for them. I think it’s important we start highlighting and making it the norm to chose the good guy but that in no way makes the good guy second best! Gale did as most bad boys do and broke her trust, put his ambitions first, and wasn’t emotionally available. While Peeta lived and breathed for her even wiling to die so she could live.

@@brodywwww I actually feel it's less picking the guy that is better for her it's picking the guy she wants over the guy that needs her. Gale needs her and needs to be her romantic interest. Peeta is not happy to be just a friend but....will be that guy if that is what she wants. She convinced herself she doesn't:t care honestly for either because love is weakness. That is why only in their weakness does she show them her caring and love. I feel it's less the exciting or sage one and more the guy who needs her and the guy she needs. Peetas is attractive. Peeta killed people before Gale did...mercy kills but kills all the same. When he needed her to take care of him in the games he didn't call out because he would rather die of an infected leg wound he got for protecting her then her be hindered by him. Gale wouldn't pack up his family and leave because Peeta was also coming....it cost Gale and Peeta their families to not run away.

ngl, when I was a kid, I was team gale. But it takes the strongest person (man or woman) to remain kind and compassionate in the face of abuse and misfortune. I hope someday I'll find someone like peeta.

Ngl i was kind of team Gale as a teen when i read the books, figured the guy that came first in the book was the best option especially since they shared the interrest of hunting n stuff. But now i think peeta and katniss balances out each other nicely, making for a healthy relationship

Peeta actually was the first of the two that Katniss met; way back on graduation day when they were 6 years old. Katniss meets Gale first when they get the medals in honor for their fathers deaths when she's 11.

My assesment of Peeta is that: He's a really kind person. That's what first strikes me about him. He's genuinely kind and providing. I never saw him as feminine because of that. Since he's all about protecting the weaker. Literally cooking, which helps sustain and nourish. He was incredibly strong, too. His goals I think were broadly just keeping everyone save. He didn't want to lose himself in the game, being far wiser than Katniss. He never intended to kill anyone. I think he's the kind of guy who wants everyone happy, not just Katniss. I think his worst fear was to be forgotten. His mother was abusive, his father and brothers presumably were enablers that were indifferent to him, too. Peeta says that nobody would care if he died. Being the youngest of his family, my headcanon is that he was treated like the weakest puppy in the litter. Seen as weak thanks to his vulnerability and sagesse. I think he felt attracted to Katniss because she inspired him. She was fire and survival.

Interestingly, the two main characters are from the same district in Appalachia in The Hunger Games, and the film happened to cast two actors from the same state, Kentucky, where its eastern border is a part of the Appalachian Mountains.

Peeta is so innocent and gentle yet so strong, smart and resourceful. I don't think these are just feminine characteristics but these qualities are usually attached to it. Some of my favourite and impactful scenes includes him like all his interview scenes. In first 2 movies he showed how smart and contriving he can be and in the 3rd movie he showed how strong he is by saving all those lives by warning them even if meant more unthinkable torture.

The first time I read the books it was so clear that she loved him in all possible ways honestly. Like Gale wasn't really a contender. Because of the movies people think she settled for him or there was little passion but she's been drawn to him from the very beginning. The bread not only saved her and her family's life at that moment but sustained them because that was her turning point. She had hope since then and she learned to be the, haha, breadwinner of the family. He has been the dandelion in the spring since the first time he was introduced (literally, she mentioned it as early as thg). By Catching Fire she was so down bad it hurts lol. And people don't realize how much she needed him too. Yeah She physically took care of him in the games (and in CF book he only had one leg) but Peeta looked out for her during press, during the victory tour, in the train, when they got back after the games, he warned her about the terrorist attack in 13, he reassured her after finnick died, he calms her nightmares, he does the publicity since he knows she doesn't like that. He did ALL THAT despite him thinking she didn't really love him. She wanted to save him, to protect him, because he made her feel safe. And he wasn't just nice to her, he was kind to Haymitch, to Effie, to Gale, to Rue... Peeta was ALL that. Even when he thought she was in love with Gale. Like let's bffr. I also think that JLaw was amazing in conveying that Katniss loved Peeta when I know the director wanted to downplay the romance. Her looks, her kisses, she was fighting for us, she read those books lol.

Calling Peeta 'feminine' because he listens, is more open to Katniss calling the shots, etc. is harmful. Implying the feminine is submissive and that Peetas' likeness to that means he is more feminine- is wrong. In conventional standards, yes, Katniss and Peeta have these contrasts that can resemble the stereotypical masculine/feminine. Yes, Gale has a toxic masculine dynamic that IS involved with gender with Katniss vis his expectation and focus of romance. As well, his worldview IS informed by war, a typically male dominated space. Yes, Peet and Gale contrast in their 'softness' or 'humanity' but assigning it via femininity I don't think completes the sentiment. Peeta, is more *empathetic* than Gale. Simple as that.

I think Peeta is both a great symbol of what she wants...love not war/power and he is also just fantastic as a person. How could you not fall for Peeta...other than being maybe tall or dark etc. physical characteristics he is what every girl asks for. He is kind but fights for what is right. He will suffer and die for the ones he loves and the ones his loves love. He is willing to run away with Katniss with Gale and Gale will not run away with Peeta. Gale doesn't love Katniss. He is not willing to die for her. If he was he would have volunteered to be in the games just to make sure she was okay. Can you imagine the almost 18 year old Gale in the games? And what is worse is her sister's name was in there once ... Peetas was in there let's face it...four times? The Baker is not putting his name in for food rations. Gale was in there 42 times or something. Peetas also never lies or misleads Katniss and Gale does. Peetas says I might get you killed kill me. Gale says I have this great idea on how to make the capital fall ... Let's possibly kill some kids....oh damn....your sister is a kid....now I feel bad....wtf. I

It was clear that when Katniss volunteered, Gale had to take over the provider role for Katniss' family. Her sister is not old enough yet to hunt and her mother is too emotionally unstable to provide. If Gale had volunteered, Katniss would have killed him, because she doesn't need a guy to die for her, she wanted her family to survive (because she was expecting to die).

Great video.I wish the hunger games was on the school book syllabus. It would be such a good story to critique and really encourage kids. I’m uk and the reading list is still Shakespeare, animal farm and the Canterbury tales etc it’s been done to death and is a chore rather than a joy to read iMo

Kristen and I both teach at the middle school level and the first book is taught in both our schools (different districts). Shakespeare and Canterbury are reserved for the high school teachers, so we get have a little more fun.

I agree with the way you describe Peeta's character I just not would say those are femine character traits.

I prefer to consider Peeta masculine in a non traditional way.

Begging people to learn what words mean before throwing around therapy terms! A trauma bond is a tactic used by abusers to manipulate a person they are abusing. One person is CAUSING the trauma. Bonding through shared experiences is a wholly different (and completely normal) thing! It’s important to know what these words mean and use them accordingly. To do otherwise muddies their actual meanings and makes it more difficult for people in these situations to recognize the tactics or be taken seriously when asking for help or talking with others.

Hi great video! just a small suggestion, if i may, sometimes poeple dont look at the screen while watching videos, so you could read the title cards between sections, instead of the "ding" sound. I also feel that it would help the video flow better :) but thanks again for the great video!

I wouldn’t say Peeta is more feminine.

I have read the Hunger Games all the way through multiple times so the description of Peeta as feminine drives me crazy. By Katniss’s description Peeta is more physically imposing than Gale and does have a temper that can be scary. He is stronger, physically and mentally, than both Katniss and Gale, while also being less impulsive and more charismatic. Plus Katniss and Gale had to use violence to survive providing food for their homes while Peeta had to survive violence in his home. So their mindset on violence is different. I can not recall one seen of Peeta being told to get people weapons. In actuality he is described as excelling in hand to hand combat and being handy with a knife. In fact in Catching Fire since Beetee had Peeta’s knife at the lightening tree the implication is that Peeta killed Brutus with his bare hands. Peeta is a manipulator not the manipulated so he is more dangerous than he is given credit for. Peeta went through just as much as Katniss if not more but it was Katniss that relied on Peeta and his strength not the other way around. Katniss yields to Peeta more than he yields to her because she listens to his reasoning. Katniss also lets Peeta do the talking for them both on several occasions.

As a dude, Peeta was my favorite because he was always masculine in a non dickswinging way.

where everyone sees katniss as what she can provide for them, peeta doesn't and there is only one other person who doesn't as well. prim.

As someone who primarily listens to KZread Videos VS sitting down & watching them, can you do voice overs reading the title/chapter cards? Example: 5:26 The dings are fine, but I was very confused the first couple times it happened because it felt like you hadn’t quite finished your thought & all a sudden there was a random ding & I didn’t realize that’s how you were trying to introduce a new topic. I’m sure for most people this wasn’t a problem because they’re watching the screen.

correction: "bonded by shared trauma" is not what a trauma bond is- an actual trauma bond only happens with an abuser (When the abuser causes pain but but you can't get away you reason that they are the good one and you deserve it, what heals a trauma bond is reclaiming your own identity as someone who was hurt and that it wasn't deserved.) So nice try, it's a common mistake, but Katniss and Peeta don't have a trauma bond.

I never had much admiration for the Peeta character because he seemed kind of weak, although he was always kind and generous. But then Gayle betrayed Katniss and the ideals of justice and liberty, because he became too self absorbed and vengeful and violent. So it seemed like she never found an appropriate mate. It seemed like she settled for Peeta.

Peeta made hard decisions too.

I need to point this out. Peeta WASNT in love with Katniss. He didn’t know her. Maybe he fantasized about a relationship. What he had is called “Limerence”. People often confuse the too. Limerence is very one sided. Often the other person isn’t aware of those feelings. It is fantasy based.
