    1. Babies sleep a lot 2. Light matters 3. Wake window is 45-90 minutes 4. Keep baby awake when eating 5. Nap lengths vary 6. Try to have a schedule, kind of 7. Look for sleep cues to keep baby from getting overtired 8. Use your support 9. The five S’s - swaddle, shush, sway, side/stomach, suck 10. Just survive the first two weeks

I have a 1 month old and just wanted to comment from one mama to another - you’re doing GREAT! One quote that stuck with me is, “the very fact that you worry about being a good mom means that you already are one”. As long as baby is fed and you’re fed, you did great today. 😊

Just had baby #4- I’ve learned that the first few weeks go by in a flash like a fever dream. & to trust your instincts. Almost always swaddle that newborn baby. Their hands have a mind of their own and they will swipe their little faces and wake up. Night time feeds/changes- try to change them with your phone flashlight on so it’s not as bright and doesn’t fully wake the baby up. *pro tip* Mamas- tuck your baby’s muslin blanket underneath your shirt so it’s on your skin and gets your scent on it good, and when sleep training swaddle your baby in that blanket so baby can smell you at night and feel comforted.

Great tips. Third baby, and I still need reminded every time I’m in the newborn phase! For those struggling to swaddle because baby doesn’t like it. What I thought this time, is how baby cries for a little while in a car seat, but then almost ALWAYS sleeps amazing once you’re driving and their all cozy in their seat. Swaddling is the same, they fuss for a bit, you walk and sway for a while and then they are out. I would mentally “drive” my baby around while rocking them crying a bit in the swaddle, and within a few minutes he was out; just like car rides. Lots of mental things help mama to just get to the next nap; it’s rough!

Thank you so much for making this video. The part that I recently discovered 1 month into having a newborn was the concept of wake windows and now it all makes sense why my baby has been so fussy during the day because she hasn’t been getting adequate sleep. I was under the impression I needed to stimulate her during the day and let her sleep at night and that was probably not a good thing. Yesterday, I started having her take more regular daytime naps and she’s like a new baby, much happier and alert during the wake windows

Thanks for another great video, doctors! My little Boy (5weeks) has always made long sleep and wake time streches. Usually he likes to sleep 3-5 hours (possible because of supplementing with formula for medical reasons) and be awake for 2+ hours in daytime. Once he is in "night mode" he sleeps great trough the night with frequent meals around every 4 hours. Our problem is that he can not fall asleep for naps in daytime despite of being tired. He really fights sleep. Do you have recommendations to help him fall asleep for naps?

I'm due with my third in 2 weeks. These are great tips that I remember learning on my own. My first broke out of the swaddle but I wish someone had suggested Velcro or arms up swaddles or soothing after swaddling until baby relaxed because I think I gave up too quickly and then used baby furniture that was counter-productive (long story). I had post-partum anxiety and didn't know what was normal or not as far as sleep patterns. Love how these doctors explained those patterns succinctly yet realistically. I also remember changing diaper between sides or when baby woke up to increase wakefulness as a newborn. In later stages I would watch eyes droop and get them down for a nap before eyes completely closed. After that, the next stage was creating a more scheduled environment around 3-4 naps a day. Thanks for the video to remind me of skills I have learned and that I can do this again. 🙂

I have a 9 month old who sleeps/naps very well now. I do look back to the newborn days with dismay at the many mistakes we made! Great advice in this video, we will certainly be doing things completely differently with baby number 2 when the time comes. The only tip I would add is to watch the room temperature, keep it as comfortable as you can and adjust layers on baby appropriately.

Hi, I just found your channel and I love the information that both of you provide for moms & babies. I’m a FTM 32 weeks pregnant with fraternal Twins. Could you do a video specifically on Twins and multiples & what might differ with delivery & postpartum. I’m kind of nervous about what to expect.

We’re so glad you found us! Twins are at a higher risk for preterm birth, which can sometimes be scary but you’ve already made it to 32weeks which is amazing!! We will gladly as this idea to our list of episodes to do, but would also recommend you check out our video on preterm birth. kzread.info/dash/bejne/l3-omsexn6itibw.html

@N Russell how would you make a video about this? Just go to your dr and check your levels if you’re curious. It seems like a waste of time and money unless you’ve been trying for over a year which is what’s recommended. People get so hung up on things that don’t matter. You’d have better luck to stop stressing about these things and just enjoy the process.

My first son slept so good and so long right from when we came home from the hospital, and I used to think newborns were “easy” and I never really felt sleep deprived, but then my second was tough! He cluster fed and never slept longer than 45 mins.... for MONTHS! 😖 I finally knew what other moms meant when they said newborns are a lot of work! Lol Now I’m expecting baby3, so we’ll see what this one has in store for me 🤷🏽‍♀️🥰 Thank you for sharing all these tips!

Eat play sleep routine, and sticking to routine. That got my kids to sleep though the night early. And they were great sleepers and good about going to bed throughout their toddler years and beyond. “On Becoming Babywise” was the book I read and It worked liked a charm.

Oh that's AMAZING!! I've read it twice now (once when I was pregnant, and again now that she is here). Did you breastfeed? She recommends spacing feeds to every 4 hours and I don't know if Cec will love that/if it's the same for breastfed babies!!

  • @princessweeniehut

I was EBF up until 2 weeks ago (she was losing weight because I wasn't producing enough). We naturally got on the 4 hour in between feeds but I remember in the book that she said if you wanted to feed every 3 hours that's fine so that might work for you guys. Now that she is on formula obviously I can see exactly what she is getting but before that I would time every feed and they were pretty long feeds like 30 minutes. (We used the Huckleberry app to track everything and love it!) I understand the feeding schedule might not work for everyone but the daytime and nighttime tool boxes she writes about are SO helpful. Our daughter was able to self soothe completely on her own by 10 weeks. Now she is a champ!! We don't follow the schedule exactly with naps because I feel like my daughter needs more sleep during the day (or else she is cranky pants). All this say do what is best for y'all!! I know you are both wonderful loving parents!!!

Watch baby for relaxed hands vs clenched fists. A full baby will relax their hands, while a hungry baby’s hands will be clenched or closed into fists.

The main sign is just that they have spent the right amount of time nursing! I think 10-15 minutes per breast is the average. You can also listen to make sure you hear swallowing, so you know they've been eating the whole time. Another possible sign is that they actively pull away when they're full, but that one is a little harder since some babies will keep suckling for comfort (but you would stop hearing swallowing). Long term signs are more obvious: weight gain, regular pees and poops, and longer and more regular naps. But, progress can also go out the window during a growth spurt haha. I would love to see a video on growth spurts!
