Pedestrian Crosswalk Video - Village of Arlington Heights

Pedestrian crosswalk signals can be confusing.
Don't Walk,
Walk,
Wait, wait, don't walk, don't walk.
Are you getting mixed signals from the pedestrian crosswalk signals?
There are three different types of signals used in Arlington Heights because different jurisdictions maintain the signals. The Village is working with other agencies to standardize the signals. But this work will take several years.
So what do you need to know NOW to safely navigate the intersections of Arlington Heights?
You may see words. Walk, don't walk.
You may see these symbols. A person or an Orange Hand
Or you may see a symbol with a countdown. Such as Orange Hand with Numbers
Pedestrian crosswalk signals are primarily installed at intersections with high pedestrian traffic. The signals are dependent on the lanes of traffic to cross assuming a walking speed of approximately 4 feet per second.
To safely utilize a pedestrian crosswalk signal, follow these steps.
First, you must push the button on the light pole. If equipped, you will hear a quiet beep when you push the button, indicating that the crossing request has been received.
Some of the crosswalks have a placard above the push button with an arrow that is pointing towards the crosswalk that will be activated when the button is pushed.
If no placard is present, then push the button that is closest in the direction you are trying to cross
Next, when the word or symbol "Walk" appears enter the crosswalk
If you are crossing and the orange word or symbol begins flashing, just continue through the crosswalk.
However if you are at the curb and the "don't walk" signal or symbol begins flashing, do NOT enter the crosswalk.
Never step off the curb when the solid "Don't Walk," or solid "Hand" symbols are illuminated
When the Village of Arlington Heights and the other agencies complete updating the signals, the uniform signal will be an image of walker, then followed by a flashing orange hand symbol accompanied with a countdown timer.
Pedestrian Safety is important to the Village. Take your time, activate the push buttons, and watch the words and symbols, and safely Discover Arlington Heights.
