Very difficult to take down a character as well done as Pearl and so viscerally acted by Mia. But the actress who plays the mother is splendid, she maintains the dark, the heavy, the eagerness in a tone that few can achieve. Unfortunately, horror films are only considered a subgenre, but the drama behind them is as grand as any realistic drama.

I like how the two archetypes of characters we want to see die seems like it's going to be played straight, and then it isn't. The "sleazy" projectionist is actually quite a gentleman and Pearl always makes the first move with him, and Mitsy looks like she could be a pompous rich girl but she's very sympathetic. Makes it clear how crazy Pearl is that she feels the need to murder them.

I've actually been hearing this fan theory that the Projectionist might be a figment of Pearl's imagination. It sorta makes sense. He says all the things she wants to hear, he hooks up with her rather quickly in a way only a crazy girl could fantasize about, and he's the only one in the cast to not have a name. One person said the moment when he "went cold" on Pearl could be symbolic for reality seeping into her hopes and dreams, and she ended him in her desperate state of denial. Idk, I think it's an interesting theory.

She was very much not happy with that result until she failed the audition. He spirit was broken already but her little glimmer of hope was diminished. Pearl is a terrifying but tragic character. 18:50 My mother grew up with 2 alligators as pets. They were mailed to her (yes that was legal back then) as babies and they didn’t want to kill them (they didn’t order them, they just showed up in the mail). So my grandpa built a habitat for them, one outdoors and an indoor bathtub for the winter. Their names were Ally and Sally. but my mom would tie a string to them and walk them around the neighborhood. Apparently they never really tried to bite anyone, and she would *threaten to let them loose in her neighbors’ houses if they bullied her*. They remember the two fondly. ALL THIS TO SAY that yes, Alligators can respond to names. They study and learn behaviors that benefit them, even if it sounds bizarre that they would listen in the first place. If it means food or shelter, they will learn who their friends are.

I no longer watch the Oscars. And haven’t for years. Why? Because they consistently snub and ignore fantastic performances in horror….and pretty much every other genre but drama and, very occasionally, comedy. The year before they snubbed Toni Collette on a nomination for her performance in Hereditary was the last one I watched. Mia Goth’s performance in this HORROR film is second to none. The best acting of SEVERAL years. But also the cinematography, set design, costume design, and Ti Wests screenplay meditation on repressed female sexuality, are also stellar. Know the last time a horror performance actually WON an Oscar? Kathy Bates for Misery, like 35 years ago! It’s complete Bull 💩 and I’m over it. I’ll never watch it again unless they change.

Mia Goth was FLAWLESS in this movie! Her character made me so uncomfortable especially that smile with the credits. Like...STOP SMILING AT ME!!! XD And I LOVE when performances outshine the gore and violence in horror movies =)

like toni collette before her mia goth should've gotten an oscar nomination for this performance, at the least, if not for the horror bias that still exists for whatever reason.

Mia Goth did very phenomenal. I can’t wait to see her performance in MaXXXine. Also if you put the trilogy in chronological order it’s Pearl X Maxxxine. Also I watched these movies chronologically for the first time and it made my experience with X a lot better because of certain character things about Pearl like her not liking Blonds and her murder dance and other stuff. Also I feel like a person like Howard who and lets put some respect on his name, served TWO WARS, survived the trenches and Omaha Beach and has seen so many shit, would push someone off the edge a bit.

I just paused at 00:43 in and had to say I'm grinning ear to ear 😁 thanks for getting this up fast. 👏👏 I don't care what other people think of these movies, but when I first watched them they have immediately went up to my list of favorite movies.. both movies are a commentary on nature vs nurture... Pearl and Maxine had crazy parents

I watched "X" just before going to see this at the cinema back in 2023, the same day - there's a lot of great links between the two that I noticed that might be missed, so it's a good idea to watch both as a double bill. But really, this is an exceptional movie, I loved it, and Mia is astonishing in it. Also got back from watching "MaXXXine" at the cinema the other day, and while it's nowhere near as brilliant as this, it is still a very enjoyable watch. "Pearl", though, is the actual pearl now in this trilogy. An inspired piece of work that can't be repeated.

There's a theory that Maxine survived the alligator, due to looking like a younger version of Pearl. If you recall in X, Pearl said that she didn't like blondes. Now you know why. Ti West just told Mia Goth "Smile, until I say 'cut,'" and she did. That explains the crazy ending. "That guy did look like Clark Kent." Well, actually...
