The show runners were very sloppy in the first two seasons and disrespected Romanian, Roma and Irish Travelers (i.e., Pavees or Mincéirs) people. How do you confuse Roma and Irish Travelers? They are completely different people with vastly different origins (North India vs Ireland), cultures and languages? How could you think the Irish Travelers spoke of all things Romanian unless you also mistakenly believed they were the same as Roma and that Roma speak Romanian? The Roma people speak a variety of languages depending on where they are, but their native language was originally Hindustani with both Persian and Arab influences. The Irish Travelers speak Shelta which is a language mixture of Irish and English. A few minutes of research and they could have sorted it out instead they arrogantly didn't care. They did correct this ridiculousness in subsequent seasons, but only after people complained as they should have.

Nonsense. Nothing was corrected, nor did they need to. It's fiction! Good lord, they are television writers, not historians. Once again I call out the fact that Biss says absolutely nothing when the subject in question is not Romanian. Why? Why should I give a damn about Romanians when she apparently has no problem when the writers have Native Americans all speaking the same language, or when they have Ukrainians speaking Russian or Koreans speaking Mandarin or even medieval English speaking modern English. You don't hear English people today griping about the fact that the people on Game of Thrones speak modern English. Get over yourself. Either be consistent or be silent.

@@snappingbear It was not corrected! Corrected would mean they pulled it from the BBC, re-edited the scenes, then sent the re-edited version back to the BBC. This can be done, you know. South Park re-edited the closed captioning on every one of their past episodes so that Token now reads Tolkien even in scenes that were decades old. You are inserting yourself into their motivation and acting as if you can mind read. There are plenty of reasons why they would choose not speak Romanian in future episodes, none of which have anything to do with Biss's hyocritical double standard

17:10 You're right about "may" vs "can" but it's not a matter of formality but rather that "may" implies consent whereas "can" implies the mere ability. She "can" dance but that doesn't mean she wants to. If you use the word "may" then it removes all ambiguity. Every English-speaking person on the planet, probably, has the experience of asking his/her teacher in school "Can I go to the bathroom?" and being responded to with "I don't know, *can* you?" lol

Idk much about Romanians or the Gypsys. It seems like you particularly have a problem with it so much because you discriminate against them and therefore don't want to be associated with them. Many people don't know that Brazilians speak Portragese but I don't think they will have a reaction like you did for making it seem they speak Spanish. I'm not saying they won't be offended, but the mistake is likely not intentional so there can be an understanding.

Europeans are mostly racist towards the Romani, on the name that they are unhygienic, litters everywhere and aggressive and are resistant to self-development. But still, there are lots of Romani people working for the cause of helping their own and those getting into better jobs and social status, yet still face discrimination for what they look like. That's why I don't take these snarky remarks seriously because this hate is ingrained into their brains from childhood.

It is admirable that you strive to get the English expressions or idioms correct. You do quite well with it, but it is also charming when maybe you use a slightly different word than what I have heard as a native English-speaker, for example, when you said “reap what you seed.” I have always heard “reap what you sow.” (Sounds like so. You probably know that, but I wanted to avoid confusion with sow, a female pig.) In the end, seed or sow, it means the same thing. I think that because English is not your first language, you put more thought into what you are saying, which is a good thing. Anyway, I enjoy your content. Thank you.

The difference of course it that this show is Fiction. How you feel about Romania and the use of the wrong language, and the disrespect of the terrible writing of these first seasons is real, and most of us do not fully understand your feelings, how could we. This whole Romanian / gypsy issue is odd to me because growing up (as a Slovak immigrant in Canada) I never connected those two groups of people in any way. It was only recently that I realized they apparently prefer being called Roma (which I assume is the source of the confusion..?) I have my own idea of what gypsies are like, everyone who's shared a country with them surely does, but again, in my mind, there is absolutely no connection to Romania at all. I don't begrudge Biss' opinion on the matter at all it's just very alien to me. Plenty of other good shows out there to watch if this one doesn't work out :) (my vote goes to Battlestar Galactica)
