    Alex, All great pointers for fish behavioral observations! It is extremely important to watch how the fish interact with each other when introducing them to each other! Schooling Fish and Schooling Children! It is very similar to human interaction. At the start of a new school year, for example, children have that approach with the teacher, and their colleagues. "Testing the waters" kind of approach. "Will the teacher like me?" Observing each other, "Oh He / She is new." "Oh there's so and so from last year." "That one is the clown!" Oh GREAT that show off!" etc... And as an Educator for over 25 years, I have had to "place" certain students in "protective" locations in the classroom! Or allocate a physical barrier between student 1 and student 24, due to life conditions, or physical issues between them. Same as with certain fish. Thank you for the lesson !!!

    The concept of floating a bag for temperature is for adding a fish from a pet store at 70F to a pond at 40F in the cold season. I still like to float my containers so the fish can see each other to minimize anxiety/fear.

    Another great Video! Instinctively whenever I've added new fish, I always rearranged the tank a little bit first. I don't keep cichlids, so maybe that's why that's always worked well for me. The old fish are so curious and busy swimming around the new arrangement, they don't seem interested in the new fish at all. Good tips to know though if I ever do get more aggressive fish. It sucks they had to put your surgery off. I hope you're able to have it done swiftly and able to recover swiftly. 👍❤👍

    Great video Alex! I have a community tank similar to yours but with more tetras minus the angels. I have one female betta left from my sorority in a 15 gallon tank with Harlequins. Would it benefit her to add her to my community tank as I see you did or keep her in the 15 gallon?

    I find that most (not all) but most betta (regardless of gender) Enjoy a community tank as long as there are a few high level plants or sticks/floating plants to comfort and hide them if they feel overwhelmed from time to time, or don't want bright light all day. Give it a go, for sure!

    You have always been much more informative than other hobbyists. I have taken into consideration all the tips and advice from various sources. I have a few questions. I have 3 tanks in focus; 5 gallon indoor tank(oldest), 15 gallon tank which is cold water...avg 61-70 degrees, 10 gallon tank which avg 75 degrees(newest). My 5g has always been stable but the 15g has always swung...pH, ammonia, nitrate, nitrites. Lately it has been more stable...no build ups but the pH is usually higher at 8.5 where the other 2 have been at 7.8

  • @Jamaicanfry1st

    @Jamaicanfry1st

    2 жыл бұрын

    My question is this...the only thing I can think of is the sandy substrate plus the coral rock must be making the pH higher...all the tanks are planted...this tank is the only one with caribsea sand. Shrimp always seemed to die in there as well. My fish on the other hand. White Clouds mostly...have been fine. Only being in distress a handful of times early on in the tanks cycle. I do water changes roughly every 3 to 4 weeks unless I sight a problem with the tanks or fish

  • @Jamaicanfry1st

    Is it worth trying to lower the pH? Redo the tank?...I know I'm close to the top end of pH...they seem ok with it.

  • @Fishtory

    @Fishtory

    2 жыл бұрын

    I recommend trying a sand cap of 2 inches then adding a few dry leaves perhaps? That would drop the ph a little but stop ammonia from leaching out of the substrate. I tend to add 1 cup of crushed coral or shells to every 10 gallons, if the tank keeps swinging . Best of luck@

    Electric blue acara, they said....peaceful they said 😂... Great video sir, but I'm wondering if I need to pull an acara - totally peaceful to other fish, but after a few weeks one is still dominating the other pretty bad...it's actually really strange, sometimes the subdominant fish behaves like a female and comes out to watch the big guy show off and display, almost like a mating display, other times it has to run for it's life whenever the big one is angry (hard to sex these guys!)...not too much visible damage, but the subdominant one definitely doesn't seem happy.... Any thoughts? 33 gallons (heavily planted) might just be too small an environment for a pair? Theyre both about 3-4 inches... I'm assuming it's way too small to add a 3rd acara to maybe break up the rage?

  • @Fishtory

    @Fishtory

    2 жыл бұрын

    If they aren't damaging fins and or one isn't like in a corner ALL the time, I think they'll work it out.. you can always toss another one in too...sometimes it flips the behavior all around (but sometimes not for the better...it's a 50 50 type chance)

    It can be a bad sign ...If you watch your fish a lot, it's common just for them to scratch themselves that way too..but if it's happening over and over it's usually a parasite. If they just flicker and twist to catch the light, it'd a happy thing
