    It's a fun series, my favorites being 1921, 1924-S, 1934-S and 1935-S. Most collectors and albums don't seem to notice or care that 1935-S has two different reverses, one with 3 rays below ONE and one with 4 rays below ONE. 1924-S for whatever reason tends to come very pitted, like an orange peel texture, giving it a unique appearance.

    Some people may look at the coin and assume that the coin is a fake. They think this because back in the, I’m not sure but I think that sometime in the 1950s , some folks were casting the dies in sand, which gave them the “ orange peel “ effect. I have found that on a number of different types of coins, thinking that the dies were rusted only to find out that coins that looked like that were actually counterfeit.

    I just took a look at the retail prices on the PCGS website and the 1925-S doesn't jump from about $500 in MS64 to about $16,000 in MS65, but from $1,000 (twice as much) in MS64 to *$40,000* in MS65! 😮 Three and a half times as much! As Butthead said, "Whoa...".

    This is a fun series to collect in MS grades. I’m down to needing only three (24-S, 27-D and 27-S). It was easy to start, and got the 21, 28 and 34-S out of the way fairly early on. I’m looking forward to adding those last three in MS63 or better in the next year or so, if I can find some appealing examples.

    Was it because of not being able to stack? The reason I've always read for switching to a low relief was that the high relief dies almost always failed to fully strike the coin and were prone to breaking due to the pressure needed. As a result, the 1921 Peace has over two dozen die pairings (VAMs) despite only 1 million minted coins.

  • @_CYB0RG_

    @_CYB0RG_

    7 ай бұрын

    From what I understand, there were a few factors. At the time, the steel used to make the dies was not strong enough to endure the pressure needed to fully strike the High Relief 1921 peace dollars, leaving most of the coins understruck. If they increased the die pressure, they broke dies, plus the dies wore out much much faster. There was also the stacking problem. They struck those 1 million 1921 peace dollars the last 4 days of December, 1921. They tried again to strike the 1922 in high relief too, but they just couldn’t tame the problems, so Anthony de Francisci was called upon to create a low relief version, which was used for the 1922-1935 peace dollars. So, yes it was the combination of things you listed. 😀

    1935 is my favorite date in Peace dollars. AU58 grade is still a nice looking coin and doesn't hurt the bank account as much.

  • @Kcconnor
    @Kcconnor6 ай бұрын

    Funny thing about the 1921&1922 is that the high relief didn’t go well with stacking. The bankers complained and with only the banks raising a stir the mint changed the die to a less relief, the banks were happy and the mint started regular minting. I don’t know if you noticed but the banks had a lot of power then and they could dictate what the government should and shouldn’t do. At any rate they still minted some 1922s with the high relief and if you thought that 1921s were expensive the 1922 high relief would floor you. There is also the myth about grading. People believe that if the center of the coin was worn down that the coin would never grade over an XF . So they would sell it at the lower grade price. Some people knew about the grading of the 1921 and bought them up for their ridiculous low price and then sent them to be graded. These coins were coming back with a MS63 to a MS 66 and above. The reason for the center of the coin being that the minting didn’t strike hard enough so the center looks like there is significant wear on the obv and the rev. So if you come across a 1921 , buy it at the reduced price. The really great thing about silver coins is that in high mint grade are not dependent on the silver price (at least not that ) . Rather they are priced on availability and the coin collectors market.

    Thanks for the Peace dollar tour! You're right about the design flatness. I want very much to like the Peace dollar, but my efforts are always rebuffed. Stiff eagle?? I actually LOVE the Eagle on the reverse. I think it is one of the best eagles on a US coin. I also don’t see Liberty gasping for air. What I see when I look at the obverse of a peace dollar is my Mom at age 25-30. It’s a HUGE reason why I love Peace dollars so much. Liberty looks so much like my Mom at that age it’s uncanny.

    I always thought the P mints were the best coins and I focused on the whole series. However, I have sought out some S mints that are nice, like the 35 S, the 27S, and maybe the 28S. You didn't mention the extra emphasis on GOD that was (intentional?) for the 1926 (you could even see it on your examples). And the 1924 P's often have extremely frosty surfaces... (yours really didn't, but fun to look for those). You also didn't mention (or I missed it) that 35 S can have 3 or 4 rays under ONE. I am not a fan of MS63's - I try to have 64 or higher. MS65 is big jump from 64 but the goal is always to get a 65 if possible, or a really good 64 or 64+ or CAC sticker. The 34S is out - just too rare to purchase reasonably in good grades but there was one on Ebay for under 10K so they are out there for the big spenders. I have some circulated 34S but they are NOT rare and don't get tricked into spending a lot for those. They are just culls, worth ~ 35 dollars. Only the high grade S mint coins are rare, there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of circulated S mint peace dollars . Again, my collection and focus all along was a P mint with a few S mints in 64 or higher. The P mint was the "mother ship" at the time and I think made the nicest peace dollars overall. In fact the 1921 continues to be my favorite. The 1923 is a nice coin in high grades and fairly affordable in a 66 which is cool to have one like that in the collection. It baffles me how nice the 66 can be... near flawless to the unaided eye. Great video, thanks much!

    Hi, Ben. I got my 1921 MS64 Peace Dollar in December 2019. I paid $895, then. I am surprised at the value today. The new Peace Dollars may keep the value of the original high-relief coin up. It is the only graded Peace Dollar in my Type Collection. I want a nice MS66 or 67 later-date coin just to have a high grade example. I would be okay with any date and/or mintmark. I just don't want to spend high-grade money. I love the Peace Dollar designs. Both obverse and reverse. Thanks for the lesson. BTW, the Mint does not consider the 2021 coin a commemorative. I like the new .999 Peace Dollars. I will be collecting the series going forward. I would love to see a 24K Gold Matte Peace Dollar to go with my Centennial set. A Including this video but they are reluctant to accept proofs Of how wrong they did on my case, so I have to pay everything again to re grade and is not guaranteed......My coins are superv comparing to his on this video and are not repeat are not clean coins, No scratches good detailing good toning, I strongly believe this agencies have preferences when it comes to coustumer, They are not fair and honest when it comes to preference and controlling value on some pieces......I really hope I am wrong. But I really have more than proff especially after people are posting they grade it coins..

    2021s and beyond Peace Dollars have to be included in the set like it or not because they're not medals, and although they are commemoratives they are LEGAL TENDER, thus can't do without them like it or not for the purist 🤓🪙, same goes for the Morgan series, reason why the 2021 D Morgan in MS70 appreciated a lot💥🤷👀

  • @_CYB0RG_

    @_CYB0RG_

    They are NOT commemoratives and neither are the Morgans. Both series have been picked up as the continuation of the vintage series. The law that was passed to produce them again makes clear they are not commemoratives. That is such fantastic out of the box thinking from the mint, to restart the series. Oh and all US coins are legal tender, that’s why they all have a denomination on them. Technically, you could spend a silver eagle, but its value as legal tender is only one dollar even though it contains $25 worth of silver. In fact, that’s why after 1964 they stopped minting 90% silver coinage. The value of the silver had become more than the face value on the coin. After 1964, the Kennedy half dollar was the only circulating coin that contained silver, but the silver in the coin had been reduced to 40% silver. Kennedy half dollars contained 40% silver from 1965-1970. In 1971, the Kennedy lost its silver and became a copper-nickel clad coin just like the quarter and dime had, starting in 1965.

    @@_CYB0RG_ No problem agreeing with you. Now, for the 2021s the reason for their issue is/ was to commemorate the 100th years of the first and last Peace and Morgan dollar issued🤷. With that being said, I don't have any problem not calling them commemorative, are the old fashion dealers/ collectors that call them comm because they don't want competition with their bread and butter business of old peace and Morgan dollars and insist on calling them commemorative to try to take attention from these new series imo 👍
