PCT Day 89: Sonora Pass / KMN to S. Lake Tahoe, 3 of 4
In 2023, in spite of record shattering snowfall in the Sierra mountains of California, I am undertaking a thru-hike attempt of the Pacific Crest Trail in an effort to complete my Triple Crown! Follow along as I see just how far the trail will let me go!

Thanks!
Carson pass isnt the most rugged pass but its high enough to have some alpine scenery, good lakes and if you hit it right the flowers are spectacular. Its actually my favorite Tahoe pass although Mt Rose summit is also very pretty. Treeline is alittle lower further north and even though Carson pass is only alittle over 8,000 feet it looks just as alpine as some of the 9,000 and 10,000 foot passes in the southern sierra.
In my neck of the woods. ENJOY my backyard

Thanks!! Happy to be able to share them with you!!
I wanted to revisit this video since I drove to a nearby campsite at Wet Meadows Reservoir near Indian Valley about a month after you were there. I took my family and we couldn't stand the mosquitos more than a single night. To top it off, there were fire restrictions, and there was an ear-tagged bear walking past our camp after it was all set up. The howling coyotes didn't help either. The views from this area can't be beat! Timing the mosquito hatches can't be possible in your case, but I can see why you start early while most blood suckers are still sleeping.

Yeah I'm sorry to hear about the mosquitos you encountered, but honestly all the other things sound pretty cool to me!!
I used to take students backpacking around Frog Lake, Elephant's Back and Round Top Lake. Beautiful area...Great area for wildflowers.

Such an amazing view!! The lake, the 360 degree aspect. Thoroughly enjoying each and every post.
When I open an ammo box from now on, I will always think of nipple mountain and what it contained? Fantastically beautiful panoramic shot

@@travelinbeat hmm. never looked into it.
Usually in a lower snow year that area is loaded with wildflowers-some 5 -6 ft tall on the hike up to showers lake out of Carson Pass.

Similar just north of Ebbets Pass, lots of boggy meadows and wildflowers. That stretch from Ebbets to Carson is a sweet little 2-3 day section hike.
Glad you guys reunited with Shade! I was wondering what happened to her. Beat (as in, not the vegetable 😉😄), you have the dubious distinction of being the first thru hiker on my first day volunteering at the Carson Pass Station.

What a profound honor!! It was wonderful to stop and visit you guys, you took such great care of us and I really appreciate you!!
Gorgeous views, what a spectacular day! Loved seeing the wildflowers, reminded me of the (way!) earlier PCT videos. Hope there were some trail magic goodies left for Bravo (Brava?!) Lima when she arrived! Great and powerful indeed! A beautiful day, thanks for sharing.

Reminds me of the desert too!! So astonishing to me to see the same types of flowers way so far away from the desert!!
Was that a geocache on top of The Nipple? As for the name being silly, I tend to feel that seeing three Tetons lined up in the Rockies is quite a bit sillier ... but ... then ... maybe I just don't understand the French psyche ... 🤔 Sorry for the silliness. I was very happy to hear your glowing report of the area at video's end. I got the feeling that you discovered that same sense of enchantment that has led me to babble previously about this region. In the High Sierra, the mountains were gracious. They let you pass. But in the Carson-Iceberg, the mountains are embracing you. Indeed, they are whispering: "We've been waiting for you. What took you so long to get here?"

Coming from a military background and having used the phenetic alphabet extensively, I love the Bravo Lima trail name. Those who know the story will know exactly what that stands for. Happy it turned out well too!
