We also pcs’d to RAF Lakenheath in 1996! We had our daughter in the hospital on base and my son went to Feltwell elementary. We enjoyed our 7 years stationed there; extended 3 years. We took advantage of traveling in England, Spain, France (Disneyland), Germany (got my bachelor’s too). Loved going to London’s west end theaters. There were so many beautiful memories made!

For a year in 1976 - 77 I was lucky enough to live with the American, Thompson family who lived on the outskirts of Harrogate in Yorkshire & Mr Thompson worked at RAF Menwith Hill. I really enjoyed seeing the differences between British & American life styles.

Glad to see you got out to York in your travels - great city, lived there for years - Betty's Tea is the treat when restrictions are lifted - It's got an interesting history linked to the RAF in fact, thanks, ^oo^

You will love exploring the norfolk coast and beaches in the summer. Holkham beach is beautiful. Wells has a great fish and chips place (french's) which is well known. Both will take you little over an hour to get to by car.

Hope your Family enjoy the adventure

A couple of personal tips about settling in here: Pub culture is great, and in Summer at least, many out of town pubs have gardens for kids to play in (but better get childcare and just go the the pub in the evening). Food is far better than you may expect and far more varied, with lots of influences from across the world- remember the most popular restaurant dish here is chicken tikka masala, Indian based but invented here. History and culture are everywhere- take advantage of them. The climate is both a very good and very bad thing. It is almost never too cold or too hot to stop you doing what you want, and the grass stays green all year, but pleasant, sunny days are not common and winters are dark and damp. And finally at the risk of sounding boring, unless you get free health insurance, don't bother with it. We have the best (or 4th best depending on survey) health system in the world and everything is already paid for out of tax- ask pretty much any person in the UK what they are most proud of and they will say the NHS.

Hi guys thanks for your service . Lots of military posted to UK on the Heath or the Hall virtually never leave base which is a shame because its a golden opportunity to see much Europe. Flights are way cheaper than stateside.

Sounds like a lovely place to live at! I would be scared of the narrow streets narrow street but like you said you’ll get use to it I bet it’s so nature over there pretty

I hope you enjoy your time here . Please get out and about and explore, there is so much to see in the UK , have a look on KZread to see . Four good tips , get a SatNav or GPS for our car if not fitted . It will save you a lot of time going from place to place. Most cars here are manual not automatic . So if you are not used to a manual shift , make sure when hiring a car ask for a automatic . Get a little booklet printed by the government called the Highway Code . Its full of good advice about driving over here . and only costs about $ 5 or $10 . Read it before coming over, it will be a great help . In the US a hundred miles is nothing , over here if you can drive for 40 miles in a hour you are doing well . Bear that in mind when planning your excursion .

Nice video, we've been to Lakenheath on a base tour and used to go to their open days, many years ago. We've always found the American people very friendly. My parent's used to live in Watton, and had a US serviceman and his wife living next door. We live in Essex, but Bury St Edmunds is one of our favourite places to visit.

Welcome to the UK. As an Englishman I lived in Houston for 6 years, in the 80s and 90s and Jax Florida for another year in the early 2000s, so i know the return living journey well. Good luck, stay safe and by the way great content to. By the way i came home.

In the months before the pandemic, I had made reservations to travel to Bovington-located east of Dorchester, which has a phenomenal 'Tank Museum'; to see 'Tank Fest'-and Glasgow. Things are looking good for June of 2022 🤞, short of a pandemic or a Ruskie invasion.

I have a question. What do you know about single pilots, in their late twenties, on how they live? Is there a life style that is really different from the married pilots? Where do they usually live - base housing or off base? Do they bring their POVs or they buy cars in England? If you such a pilot, I would not mind communicating (email) with him or her. The reason why I am asking is because I am writing a realistic romance story that takes place in England, between a British nurse and an American pilot stationed at RAF Lakenheath.

I was stationed at Lakenheath 89-92. I lived in Thetford.

Interesting to see it from an American point of view,I can tell you Red Lodge isn’t a typical English town to be honest,a lot of it is relatively new build. Also, the local areas are pretty much skewed off the norm by the presence of the bases. Blew my mind that you brought your mattress over from the states,but I guess the USAF has to use those Globemasters and C5 Galaxy’s for something 😉 (joke) Don’t know why this popped up on my KZread,but I’ve given you a sub and wish you luck with your channel👍 All the best from the village of Thaxted in north west Essex.

Liked watching this vlog. Question for you about jet noise at RAF Lakenheath- do the F15’s and F35’s occasionally takeoff in full afterburner at, say, 2, 3 or 4 AM when they are participating in a military exercise? I’m guessing that after a couple of months, you get used to the jet noise, but not sure. Did you? I’ve watched a number of F15’s takeoff at airshows and they are ***loud***!!!

I agree they are really loud! We live off base now so I couldn’t tell you if we would get used to the jet noise. I don’t recall them waking up in the middle of the night when we did stay on base for a couple of months.

Have you been out ,and visited the uk. And seen how us locals live .? .weve been doing it now for about 10, 000 years now .

Really like your videos I often drive past the base on my way to my mums. Always interested to know how the Americans get on here. Years ago I think the public could visit the base do you know if this is still possible ? I think they stopped all this.

Do the base suggest places to visit or is it just by talking to others? Reason for asking is I follow a channel of a family who were at Mildenhall and moved back to States last year, and have seen others and all seem to visit similar places in the UK so wondered whether that was the case.

I would say both. They offer trips through the base where they take you. There’s also a few lakenheath travel groups on fb where people share details of their travel adventures.

This is Red Lodge, 10 minutes from base ☺️ I would say it’s a very active village. People always running and biking but there are some homes located in quieter areas. Good luck on your move! There’s so much to see and do around Lakenheath❤️

Hi John! Commissary is just a grocery store at a military base. BX is a shopping center at a military base. TLF is temporary lodging (hotel )on base and then Charlie’s is a sandwich shop :) Thank you for asking! I’ll try to be more detailed in my future videos

@@TheWanderingAces Thanks. Have you been to Wales yet? I used to visit my grandparents in South Wales every summer when I was a child. There are some great beaches on the The Gower. One of my favourites is Three Cliffs Bay (but you have to get the tides right). North Wales is more mountainous. Checkout the steam train that runs up to the top of Snowden.

Why did you ship your car across? Wouldn't it have been probably cheaper to sell it and get a new car here in UK. Even if you wanted to keep a left hand drive it wouldn't have been hard to convert and you can get automatics here too?

We did and we drove both with no issues. I believe she was driving a British vehicle though.

I hope you're careful with your left-hand drive car - you probably know that there was a bad incident (I think it was connected to your base). which happened a few years ago, which has not gone down well with the locals. I can't imagine driving round the States with a right-hand drive vehicle.!

Hi John! If you are talking about Sacoolas who ran over a teenage boy and left him to die, she was driving a right hand drive(British vehicle in case anyone didn’t know). We had both a left and right hand drive vehicle and both worked out fine. She drove on the wrong side of the road though. It’s disappointing that she got away with it.

It's a scandal that your videos aren't getting the views they deserve. They're beautifully produced. I've just been binge-watching several of them. Just curious - I'm assuming you've been to Bury St Edmunds, which is pretty much on your doorstep?

Awww Lakenheath!! I was brought up in Mildenhall and so I got to see the changes that occurred when the bypass was built around Red Lodge; it was a ghost town for a long time. I love love love Bury St. Edmunds, but I don’t have a legit reason to go bk now I live in Wales!!

@@TheWanderingAces Hi! That’s so cool. Where did you go? Did you learn any Welsh? I have lived on the Welsh border for around 3 years: England is just down the lane, literally!! I love Wales and really appreciate the landscape because it is soooo damn flat around Mildenhall/Lakenheath and the fen area where I grew up. The trip over from the border to Aberystwyth is like travelling across snippets of the UK: one moment you can be taking in the rolling hills of Wales, then it’s like you’re in the Yorkshire Moors and so on.

I want to move to England. I live in Boca Raton, Florida. The economy is so bad here. Biden, doesn't care about us Americans. I have family and friends in England.
