Same here. I remember when Lara played "Sam" on Gimme a Break. She was my first Hollywood Crush, she was so adorable! I think she was about 2 years older than me, since I was born in the Summer of '69. It's cool to find out she's still active after all these years!

Hmm...On Gimme a break, the mother figure was a black maid, whereas Diff'rent Strokes sees a man adopt two black boys whose mother was his maid. Did different Strokes influence Gimme a Break?

Demographic data of poor families on welfare stuck at home watching tv because they couldn't afford to go out often but stayed at home is what geared writers and producers to appeal to the broadest audience available.

@@terrafirma9328 That's a dumb answer. It's clearly about interplay between racial demographics, or they would have picked anybody the audience could have related to regardless of race. They probably wouldn't do interracial casting on The Lion King on Broadway if it had the same social context to its production as did The Wiz. They might have even gone the same route as far as fiscal demographics had Diff'rent Strokes not already been done. In fact, now it's a bit easier to see why the show was so named.
