A clear of the game without continuing or restarting stages. As well as beating the game without dying, using any of the power items and clearing all the stages to get the good ending.
Super Hydorah is a game made by Locomalito, who is known for making really high quality freeware games that are often love letters to beloved franchises. A couple of his games also got retail remakes, Super Hydorah being one of them. Hydorah is his take on shmups, with the main inspiration being classic games like Gradius, R-Type, Darius etc.
Super Hydorah is a remake of the freeware game Hydorah (which you can still download). System and stages were reworked, and it added a bunch of extra stages.
This game has many different shots, subshots and bombs that you gradually unlock by beating stages. You choose a load-out at the start of every stage.
You power up your shot and subshot from red powerup containers. These drop a powerup that cycle between green and red.
Green - Powers up the main shot.
Red - Powers up the subshot.
The shot and subshot power up at level 5 and level 10 (max).
You need to power up every shot and subshot individually.
There are also powerup containers that drop powerups that cycle between three different powerups. These are:
Blue - Speed up. Max speed is three.
Yellow - Power. A bomb. Can hold a max of three at a time.
Purple - Shield. Gives you a one-hit shield. Gives you three hits on Rookie Mode.
There is a secret in every stage. This usually involves touching a certain spot in the stage. I'm not sure if the secrets actually do anything but I got them because why not. I completely forgot the one in Silent Fleet though because I was too scared of dying lol.
All the stages are very unique from each other. Every stage has a unique setting, unique enemies and unique mechanics/gimmicks.
Stages are short but very compact. Things don't really get repeated, they cut to the chase and then move on to the boss.
For the first half of the game my plan is to get Light asap since you get 2000 points for every bomb item you pick up instead of the usual 500 at max. On the way I power up Wide Shot in Deep Space since it's free and I need it for some other stages. For the 2nd half I make a beeline for Vulcan and Homing since those are the most powerful weapons in the game. I can do the rest of the stages in any order after that.
Light doesn't actually do anything besides give you more score for bomb items and acting as a key for Black Gate.
The game has a bad and a good ending. In order to get the good ending, you need to destroy all the 'Hydorah Seeds'. These are located at the end of various stages (the map before the final boss shows which stages). These are usually the harder and longer stages.
The ending is slightly different if you 1cc or not. The statues at the end will be different.
The game is not that terribly difficult I'd say. You also get a shitton of lives and shield drops are very frequent. The boss rush I'd say is one of the hardest parts in the game exactly because you have to survive pretty long until the next shield drop. The game is obviously a lot harder if you're not playing with an optimal load-out though. It's also extremely long. An all-stages run clocks in around an hour and 15 minutes, which is much longer than most 2-ALL's. It will be even longer if you die a bunch and have to replay checkpoints.
Oh right the game does have checkpoints by the way, so if you die you lose power and go back to a previous checkpoint. Most checkpoints let you get power back but there are some nasty checkpoints. The midboss checkpoint in the final stage is one of those. You get zero powerups back when you die and that can spiral out of control fast.
The upcoming Exa arcade port seems to counter most of these points though. The game is a lot harder and lives and shields are much rarer. It also got rid of the checkpoints.

Man this game is so hard, im 2 stages away from completing it but ive lost like a thousand times. This guy who plays it has insane skill! Thanks for posting the video it helped a lot
Holy crap I just beat the game I cant believe it. Definitely of the hardest games I ve played...looking forward to the next locomalito game!
I miss the old secret ending with the statues of well know shmup characters. I understand why they had to change it, but it's still sad they had to
This KZreadr makes it look easy, which in reality it's not. I bought the newest version on Steam and barely beat it on Easy mode (default 3-hit shield, half the score gained from all kills and powerups). Also, thanks for the subtitle instructions.

Just managed to beat the game today, but used like 37 continues. Getting a 1cc on a game this long is insane!

Trenton Thompson That was me being enthusiastic about the arcade platform. I do welcome fine-tuned enhanced versions from home release to arcade. The arcade games have different environmental and social factors compared to home/mobile release. The most notable aspect for arcade games is catering to two audiences: The players and operators, with a latter expecting short play times per credit for average to beginning players. Expert players develop from repeated plays.
just beat it today and love most of the stages as they are creative. I use Laser, Scorts and Turrican throughtout the game and found it a little easy to finish each levels but some can be tough as hell especially the Water level and Galactic Inferno. Got the Good Ending and now i just need to 1cc it for the true ending
That ending reminds me of Gradius II, RayForce, & Thunder Force IV obviously.

Funny thing is the 1cc statue is more copyright friendly than the one that isn't (which implies that every 2d shooter is canon within Hydorah)

Does this game have a cap with continues? It erased my progress after an apparent 100 continues.
What did you use joystick, keyboard o arcade stick?
Maybe the secrets are part of what counts toward a "perfect" clear of the stage? I don't think you messed up otherwise on Silent Fleet but you still didn't get a perfect bonus there.

No, the bonus depends on hits/deaths during the stage. You get a perfect if you didn't get hit. For example: 34:20 got a hit, got "very good" instead of "perfect".
Why are you always equipped with light and how did your speed power-up go down if you didn't die?

At that particular point all your speed upgrades are lost because that gas boss emmitts some stuff that removes your upgrades. He carries that light item so he can increase his score rather than getting power ups..i think

@@coulthard1984Specifically, the light is in place of a "bomb" item, which is what that third row represents. The light item is only usable on the black hole level, and only to light the "torches" that allowed progression and recovery of the sword weapon at the bottom of the level.
Strange, i have the game but in this version it has boss health bar, how can i get the new version? I have to buy it?

how is that ''NO MISS''..its definitely a few misses..i wonder how to get perfect..i killed almost every enemy in level 2 only 2 missing and still didnt get ''perfect''-ranking..only ''very good''-ranking :( ..i also only fire when i have enemies in my target line..so im basically doing a better job than the dude in this video and yet i dont get a ''perfect''-ranking..what exactly are the conditions i have to meet?

No miss means no deaths in arcade jargon (Japan). And to get a perfect you have to complete a stage without getting hit, the ranking depends on number of hits/deaths. Hope that helps :)

@@SPM_STG funny thing is i fulfilled that already and didnt get perfect-ranking..i didnt die and i didnt take damage..if it was just that i would have gotten perfect ages ago..but i dont get it for not dying and not taking damage alone..there has to be something like score that counts as well..also i dont use bombs/special, cause if u do u dont get perfect as well...i really think its also the score to some extend or the amount of enemies u kill..who knows

@@SPM_STG yea i dont even use a shield..and funnily i have seen videos of dudes taking hits on shields who still got perfect..maybe they faked the video.. but i guarantee u, its not just hits taken..i almost never get hit..and if i get, i immediately end the round and retry..so its impossible..unless my game is different from yours..slowly i begin to think the conditions u have to meet for perfect, are slightly different in each level..

@@SPM_STG The last part of the game is 6 super long boss one after the other without continue. It is simply artificially increasing the time it takes to complete the game.

@@MarquisDeSang I love that boss rush and wouldn't say that's a flaw, but I understand it can be frustrating, it's punishing. Its purpose is not to increase the playtime though, but to feel epic. I guess they could've added extra shields on the easy mode... No reason not to if you're going to have an easy mode to begin with. You may not like checkpoint-based shmups, that's all (which is perfectly fine, I feel the same some times, but calling it a flaw...)
