PBY Catalina in a Nutshell: The Greatest Flying Boat

The PBY Catalina was the most-produced flying boat of World War II. It served valiantly in a variety of roles, and it has a service record now pushing 90 years (yes, it's still in use!). Credit where credit is due, and this seaplane is due a great deal of it.
Y'all are swell.

I read an incident where the pby went on a torpedo mission actually hitting a ship, zeroes shot it up but it made it back to base. The pilot was jack cram. He got the nickname “mad jack” after that mission

Not well known but it was a PBY Catalina that spotted the German Battleship Bismarck during the hunt for Bismarck. Nobody had seen the Battleship since it blew up the HMS Hood 3 days earlier. IIRC the plane was crewed by US Navy aircrew flying out of Iceland. Since the US was not at war yet, the report was not publicly admitted.

The Sunderland was bigger and more heavily armed. It took over many PBY missions in the Atlantic. However the Cat was one of those planes that looks like it was designed by a committee, but came out right for once. It did more than could have been expected of it and fully deserves the accolade. It looked right because it was right.
