A section of the Pilatus-Bahnen's unique cogwheel-and-rack mechanism is on display in the Alpnachstad station. It was invented by Eduard Locher (1840-1910), a Swiss railroad engineer who developed the double-rack system in response to government concerns about the safety of existing cogwheel systems on a mountain that was known for its high winds.In the Locher System, a flange or disc below each cogwheel keeps the wheel from lifting off the rack when the train is buffeted by winds. This system has been used on the Pilatus railway since it opened for business on June 4, 1889. (The original wooden cars were powered by steam; the railroad was electrified in 1937 .)
In 2002, the ASME International History and Heritage Recognition Program gave "Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark" status to the Pilatus-Bahnen's Locher double-cogwheel system.
Une section du mécanisme à crémaillère latérale unique au monde du Pilatus-Bahnen est exposée à la gare de Alpnachstad. Ce système a été inventé par Eduard Locher (1840-1910), ingénieur des chemins de fer suisse qui a développé ce système de double entrainement latéral en réponse à des préoccupations gouvernementales d'alors quant à la sécurité des systèmes de crémaillère connus alors en Suisse, notamment en raison le la forte pente (48%) et des condition climatiques régnant au Pilatus.
Dans le système Locher, une bride ou d'un disque en dessous de chaque roue dentée empêche celle-ci de sortir lorsque le train est ballotté par les vents. Ce système a été utilisé sur la voie ferrée du Pilatus depuis son ouverture le 4 Juin, 1889. (Les voitures en bois d'origine étaient poussées par des locomotives à vapeur . Le chemin de fer a été électrifié en 1937)
En 2002, le Programme de reconnaissance du patrimoine technique historique mondial (ASME) à inscrit à son patrimoine ce système unique.

    One of the best videos I have ever seen on topic cogwheel trains, because you got shots that illustrated how the cogwheels work, and how the switches roll over. Absolutely outstanding.     Great video! I find these cogwheel mechanisms fascinating but I don't know very much about how they work (this is the highest level of detail I've seen of how the work in KZread). Are the cogs driven directly by an electric motor or are they hydraulically actuated? How are the cogs connected to the motor? I guess there must be a differential to allow different speed during the turns. I hope someone can shed some more light.

    This is a shunt step of motor excitation. Red ON, yellow OFF. This corresponds to half a step of the main controller. We hear very well the speed difference of the engines.

    6:45 Pantographs are disengaged on the downhill trip. Where does the carriage get power?

    On the downhill trip on the old railcar without electronic equipment, the motor work in generator short-circuited. There is no need for auxiliary energy or possibly lighting and heating taken from the motor that work as a generator. The pantograph can be lowered to limit wear.
