Paxton Tower
Beautiful and mysterious Wales... Paxton's Tower is a Neo-Gothic folly erected in honour of Lord Nelson. It is situated on the top of a hill near Llanarthney in the River Tywi valley in Carmarthenshire, Wales.
However, rumour abounded that Paxton’s motives for building the tower were more than just commemorative. During the infamous 1802 Carmarthenshire county election, Paxton allegedly promised to build a much-needed bridge over the river Towy if elected. Although having racked up a bill in excess of £15,690 treating voters to copious amounts of food and alcohol, Paxton was defeated. The story goes that Paxton used the money and material for the bridge to build the tower, hence why the tower is also known as “Tŵr Sbeit”, the tower of spite.
