In this series about pawn structures, GM Alex Lenderman will discuss further chess strategies involving pawns. In particular he will discuss the topic of pawn storms and how they can apply in different openings. Special attention will also be paid on the topic of the pawn center. You will learn general ideas and rules on how to fight against the pawn center and the space advantage.
In this video, you will learn attacking and defensive ideas of pawn storms in the French Defense from white’s and black’s perspective.
General advice:
Don’t be afraid to sacrifice material: In pawn storms every tempo is important. Don’t be afraid of sacrificing pawns, because if your opponent takes the pawns, he will also open lines or files for your heavy pieces.
If there is no immediate breakthrough it is a good idea to improve your worst piece and bring it into the attack.

Thank you for this video. Even though I don't play the French with either colour, I love doing pawn storms. They could be a very potent weapon for strategical attackers. For that reason I don't like when pawn storms are done to me. From time to time I play the Mieses-Kotrč variation of the Scandinavian defence as Black, which is sometimes called "la defensa Caro-escandinava" in Spanish, because Black has a pawn structure that can also come from the Caro-Kann defence, with pawns on c6 and e6. Especially in this structure I really struggle when my opponent ventures a pawn storm, either king- or queenside. Maybe you could continue the series by showing attacking and especially defensive pawn storm plans in the Caro-Kann or the Scandinavian. Thank you again.
