I've actually seen an episode where the seller was an actual expert in I think it was modern artist and the guy was a super rich collector and when Rick said I know a guy who can come tell me if this painting is real or not and said he is one of the most known in the field and when the expert came in the seller said he'd been selling buying and grading art for 25 years and never even heard of ricks expert and basically called him a liar when the guy said his painting was only worth half what the guy asked for.

The old man was even better. He'd say " whatcha want to do with it? Sell it, pawn it, or donate it? " By throwing " donate " in there he was very cleverly depreciating the value of the item in the sellers mind before negotiations even started.

Wow, that's an amazing card to have graded a PSA 10!

That was a below the belt appraisal. Even with the card market being depressed, this card could have easily fetched 50K easy on the auction block. The gent did fine backing out and holding onto it.

The entire show is actually done on a set that looks like the actual Gold and Silver Pawn Shop they own in Vegas, as it is illegal to film real pawn transactions in Nevada. Everything is pretty much prearranged. Fun to watch though.

Checked the population report on this card, done using the verification number in the lower right hand corner on the PSA label. This card is a population 1, indicating that there is only one of these cards graded in that specific condition (PSA 10). There isn't "another one", so either this guy went on to flip his on eBay or you need to refine your search.

I just found an article claiming that the exact same card was sold for $69,500

Patriots Fan any reseller be it sports shop or an antique store, will pay about the same as a pawn shop because they will be taking the risk of the time and effort it takes to sell to buyer willing to pay the true value. Now people go to pawnshops because they can provide you instant cash for your item on the spot. Its not gonna be what the item is worth but when you need money quick, you are gonna sell below value anyhow. Also, pawnshops are great for people who buy stuff yardsales or estate sales for dirt cheap that turn out to be valuable but hard to sell. So if you buy a rare action figure in mint condition from a yard sale for lets say $10 because the owner had no idea about the value, which is valued at about $500. So you take it to a pawn shop which offers you $250 for it. Then yeah thats a good deal for someone who only paid $10.

The high end baseball card market is like the high end art market. Once a seller can get a painting on the up escalator it will always keep going up. Not every day, but up when it sells next. Even in otherwise bad economic times.

His reaction was justified because it went on to sell at 40k a few months later, then 57k a few months after that, and most recently this same card sold for $69,500 in 2019. So.... Rick's expert was so far off it's hard to imagine he is an actual expert. PSA 5's are what go for almost 10k to 12k

Imagine being the considered weirdo back then who preemptively was sleaving and protecting these 2 cent cards and getting laughed at by the other kids. Man, these are the times I wish a time machine was handy.

The show is scripted. They're doing actual deals but it's not like they bring cameras to the store and just randomly start filming customers coming in. I believe you have to send an application if you want to appear on the show, and they know in advance what item your bringing in, so they can also contact the experts beforehand.
