I was thinking the same. I don't believe he was a great finisher except for long range shots. The other goals he scored more was also dribbling the goalkeeper after dribbling everybody else.

One of my favorite portuguese footballers. Everytime he got the ball, everyone would get excited of what he would do. He only had one direction in mind: opposition's goal. Amazing player. A whirlwind on the pitch.

I miss him playing... for an early 80s child who listened to the grown ups talk about football players in Portugal there were only a few superstars, Pélé, Zico, Maradona, Gullit and Van Basten! But above them all there was the pride of Portugal, Chalana's heir, the Furacão Futre!!!! My first and true football Idol!

The amount of tackles he was getting is unbelievable... what a player. People only talk about messi and Cristiano nowadays but I've always said "if they played in the 90s and early 2000's it wouldn't be all about those 2" there was a crazy amount of great players and the game was too rough. Futre was equal to Diego in dribbling, very few players in the history of the sport can claim that. It was in his vision, finishing, passing, power and leadership that he fell way short of Diego in, but still, a wonderfully gifted player. I would think he is the best Portuguese dribbler ever

O maradona so por ser argentino ja tinha clara vantagem... mas para mim o futre era melhor que o maradona, ate porque nao precisava de outros recursos para jogar melhor

That goal at 6.00 where he kills the pass on the wet pitch & flicks it home. Unbelievable skill. One of the reasons I like Atletico Madrid. I wish he'd played against us when he was at West Ham, particularly at Edgeley Park.

Because narratives. Football narratives. In 20 years people will shame anyone that doesn't think KDB is the best midfielder of our time. Modric, Kross, Bernardo Silva, David Silva etc everyone will be seen to be miles behind him. Ok maybe not Modric, but only because of the ballon dor. Futre himself lost a ballon dor to Gullit by ONE vote.

No, maybe a little bit more quick in short bursts, but Maradona was more powerful so had a slightly different style. More accurate to say he was probably more frantic than Maradona.

@@njldst2007 no the difference is that Maradona was quick in short bursts only but his top speed was nothing special, Futre on the other hand had amazing acceleration and top speed. He just didn't have the end product of Maradona and was more selfish.

@@ronniep9272 I've seen Maradona carry the ball forward from his half to the opponent's end more times than Futre did, who usually picked it up closer to the opponent's box as he positioned himself as a more typical wing forward would. That being said, now that I think about it, I can see there is truth in your point because Maradona glided rather ran at full burst most of the time, so I guess his top speed not being crazy fast combined with his quick bursts, reaction speed and most importantly, his stamina and endurance to continue those short bursts till the end all added up to his overall dribbling.

Unfortunately os style and skill really found in most opponents only one option: hit him hard. He had severe injuries early on in its career, and never got to its full potential. He should have none the less own the best player in the world at least once and politics l, corruption prevent him from winning. A true Montijense that deserved better luck and recognition from the football world. Still a legend in Portugal and Spain.

Maradona did amazing things with the ball at the level of skills, something Futre couldn't do. In that sense he was not only the best dribbler but also the Ronaldinho tricks player of his generation. And he won a WC and had amazing charisma. So people will focus on all of that (and the fact they don't know Paulo). But I agree...they are not SOO different. But that's football history for you. Once you win that WC, you are unfairly places above everyone of your generation. Eusebio too was very similar to Pele, but had no WCs. Or Baggio. He is the best italian player ever, but he didn't win a WC, so he isn't as well remembered (more than Paulo, but still).

I am from Portugal and i think Futre was better than Maradona...if he played in real Madrid he would win balón Dor and everything...he would be the goat for sure...he Lost the oportunity playing for Atlético and Also for injurys,but in those videos we can see how great he was..

Futre was more arrogant! He refused to play for west ham on his debut, because he couldn't play in the number 10 shirt. And after refusing to play, he buggered off home before the match even started! By heck, he was a great player though 💯

You can actually see how much of his game he based on Maradona (many of his movements / dives / celebrations are pure Diego). It does seem that he had a crazy football IQ, very fast and skilled but sadly a bit too weak genetically (and yes, he took some REALLY bad challenges!) for the top flight game.

obviously talented and fast, but very inefficient. see how his teammates are just hanging out in the box doing nothing while he is doing his excessive dribbles. put him in an average team, he can do miracles for you. but in a top tier team, he's just wasting others abilities and slowing the team down.
