One of the finest players of that era. Pure natural talent. His dribbling skills were as good as Maradona, only lacked the physicality. Injuries prevented futre from becoming even greater. Despite that, he should of won the ballon d'or in 87.

I never saw Maradona do half as much of what Futre did . Except in drugs , Futre was better than him in everything else . George Best was better than Maradona . Maradona at Naples , without the Brazilian Careca , would have won nothing at all .

So true, my friend!He got bad luck to choose Atletico instead another great time back then!He got dazzled with a few pesetas thrown by the controversial(to say the least)Jesus Gil & Gil.We have to keep in mind , Futre kind of opened the doors for Portuguese players playing outseas . So, experience to choose a solid and honest football project was none. Atletico was always in the shadow of Real and Barcelona. Even with Futre, Atletico never took off.It was him and one or two good players. Can you imagine if it was today.....!?

He was good, but not a wonderful player. Watching edited videos like this you could think that Futre was a mega star and not, he wasn’t. Eusebio, Figo and CR7 were, by far, the three best portuguese players of all times

He also played in those 3 clubs... That tells a lot why he's loved by all in Portugal. He also became quiet a character after he retired and he's famous for his meme when he was a candidate running for president of Sporting. His press conference is in KZread. He became a comedian by accident.

Spectacular player. I always thought, he was the best Portuguese dribbler of the ball I've seen. His ability to beat numerous players in close proximity & change directions so suddenly, is reminiscent of George Best & Lionel Messi. If he'd been a prolific goalscorer as well. He'd have been ranked next to Eusébio & Cristiano Ronaldo.

This is my favorite player ever. He made me love the sport and become a FCPorto supporter. During his prime his on ball skills were only matched by Maradona. He was the 3d best Portuguese player ever. Ronaldo is top 3 ever. Eusebio still has an edge because of durability. But he was better than Figo. Undermined by his knees injuries that took out a good part of his prime, he had immense bad luck and this cost him the recognition of the world beyond those who saw football in the 80s. He became the most expensive player ever when he left Porto has European Champion and the best player on that team with 21yo. But he should have never went to Atletico. It was a low profile team and there was only so much he could do by himself in order to climb towards Real Madrid status. He should have picked Real, Milan or Inter. But the money that came from Atletico was unheard at that time... He also came into a blind sided era of Portuguese National team. We had excellent 70's and early 80s squads. Same in the mid 90s. Futre prime was right in the middle of this dry spell and was left all alone. Had he been 5 years younger and the world could have seen a team with Futre, Figo and Rui Costa playing together. One can only imagine what such gigantic creative talent together would produce...

In my opinion and in the opinion of the many Portuguese who saw him play, he is considered to be the second best Portuguese player ever. Eusébio was a great player but he was overvalued a lot because of the club he played for, SL benfica, a club that was attached to the political regime of dictator Salazar. Eusébio was basically a piece of political propaganda and still is today.

@@fabiobarbosa8172 In 1982 Paolo Rossi won the golden ball, in 90 Lothar Matthäus won the golden ball, in 2000 it was Figo's turn to win and the following year it was Michael Owen's turn. Many others have won a golden ball. They were all great players but it wasn’t winning a golden ball that they were once considered the best in their country. Futre never won a golden ball, probably because he went to the wrong club. Eusébio was a great player, but never at the level of what Benfica's propaganda always wanted to show. Yes, Futre was better and Ronaldo is light years away from Eusebio. You may not accept it, but that is the truth.

The fact that Pele and Maradona rate Eusébio as one of the best alongside them, should be enough for anyone to believe it. Futre was a phenomenal player, and it is a shame that he doesn't get enough recognition. But he is not in the top 3 of the best portuguese players ever. 1. Cristiano Ronaldo 2. Eusébio 3. One of my childhood heroes. I couldnt watch him til my 20s but He was a legend at Sensible World Of Soccer, despite He is playing for a low level team (Reggiana) I always selected that team because of Futre.

In the same way, if you watch regular media and mainstream youtube pages in the last year many want to burry Ronaldo and pretend he never existed because Messi won a WC "and is now officially the best player ever". The same way Pele was undisputed as the best ever until recently because "he scored 1000 goals" and won 3 WCs (one of which he never even played in). Because there are narratives. If Futre had ONE more vote in the Ballon Dor nomination instead of Gullit, he'd be better known. If he played for Real instead of Atleti. ...etc There's certain criteria that ensures you are talked about. But it doesn't have anything to do with talent.

Futre é uma lenda de Portugal, mas foi em Espanha ao serviço do Atlético onde mais brilhou. Foi ele que me fez ver os jogos do Atletico pela televisão. Mesmo na fase descendente da sua carreira, fiquei maravilhado com as suas exibições no meu Benfica. É um craque. Sem querer fazer comparações, para mim está entre os 3 melhores futebolistas Portugueses de todos os tempos, junto com Eusébio e Cristiano.

Uma palavra apenas para definir Futre:ESPECTACULO

I always feel that football has actually devolved since the end of the 90's. The game today just doesn't produce true dribblers anymore. When you see them now, you're almost blown away by surprise. 70's, 80's and 90's we saw some truly outstanding number 10's. Future was underrated for the majority of his prime.

For me Futre was from the same category of a Maradona and later Ronaldo (brazilian one) the type of player to play with the ball glued to the boot and tearing defesenses apart with vertiginous and unpredictable movement. A sensational player

O futre nao acabou a carreira muito cedo porque jogou ate aos 32 anos. Normalmente os jogadores acabam a carreira depois dos 35 anos. O Van Basten por exemplo acabou a carreira com apenas 29 anos por causa das lesoes.O platini acabou a carreira com 31 anos por nao ter mais vontade para jogar futebol.O Dani ex benfica,sporting e ajax acabou a carreira com apenas 27 anos porque nao tinha mais vontade para jogar futebol

Bastava este Futre com o CR7 e já chegava. Junta-lhe o Bernardo Silva e Show de Bola. Nem quero imaginar o que seria a seleção de 2004 com o Futre, ou a de 2006. Há jogadores que aparecem em Portugal numa altura errada. O Futre foi um deles. Tanto talento e ficou entre gerações. Como outros aliás, mas ele era máquina. Meio maluco, mas máquina :D

Imagina CR7 ou Messi irem para uma equipa do meio da tabela e levá-la a ganhar a liga contra Sporting, Benfica e Porto. Maradona fez isso pelo Nápoles. A diferença é que naquela altura a Série A era a melhor e mais competitiva liga do mundo.

He played with BIG teams...problem was, he had very bad knee injuries, and changed too many teams, he was amazing to watch..i agree Messi watched a lot of film on him....

For me between 17/22 years old he is the most naturally gifted player Portugal produced, not the most complete because he was too individualistic and tried to solve things always going 1 vs 1, started smoking at 12 years old and he wasn’t good scoring chances, the year he scored more goals was playing alongside Schuster, but his dribbling and acceleration and his left foot was Pure football from the street, you cannot learn this on Academies, only try to recreate it.

Melhor que CR entre os 18 e 22? Tenho dúvidas! Muito já não se lembram do primeiro golo de CR pelo Sporting ou do que fazia no Manchester United. CR para além do dribble estonteante nessa idade, era muito mais completo (jogo aéreo, livres, etc.)

@@miguelponte8594 Não concrdo. Lembro-me perfeitamente dos dois e a única vantagem do CR sobre o Futre era o juízo. Mas em talento, velocidade, drible era superior. Lembrem-se que no tempodo futre não havia internet nem tv por cabo. Nós cá só víamos uns segundos por semana no Domingo desportivo... Hoje um jogador como o Futre, não teria preço.

@@fernandoeiras eu costumava ver religiosamente os tais segundos no Domingo Desportivo e acompanhava todas as façanhas do Futre, que era o meu idolo. Mas não sofro de anti Ronaldite, cuja carreira acompanhei de perto. Posso dizer que não tem comparação. Na melhor das hipóteses Futre tinha um dribble um pouco melhor, tal como Messi, fruto do baixo centro de gravidade, mas em velocidade, truques, potência de remate, jogo de cabeça e passe, o CR no seu auge era melhor, para além de mais regular e consistente. Estamos a falar do maior goleador da história e segundo melhor no capitulo das assistências a seguir a Messi. Se há dúvidas quanto ao que Ronaldo era capaz de fazer no seu auge, há centenas de vídeos disponíveis, todos com diferentes golos e jogadas.

@@miguelponte8594 Felizmente, não sou anti Ronaldo, um fenómeno que sinceramente não compreendo, ainda menos dos portugueses. Simplesmente aprecio mais o drible, a velocidade, o arranque, o balanço e o estilo do Futre. Saía-lhe naturalmente. O Ronaldo, é uma exemplo de trabalho e dedicação. É efectivamente mais completo, em termos de ser um finalizador e cabeceador nato. Mas o Futre era inconfundível, inigualável. Era como se nos dias de hoje, juntasses Mbape e o Messi, com a elegância do Ginola. Mas enfim, são apenas opiniões, que obviamente são válidas e respeito. Dois grandes talentos mundiais. Só que ao Futre faltou o devido reconhecimento, que o Ronaldo teve (e até ele, por vezes, nem todo o devido).

@@fernandoeiras Acho que as pessoas esquecem o Ronaldo de 2004 a 2012...o drible, a velocidade, o arranque, os truques. Não ficava atrás de Futre em nada. Aliás, penso que era melhor, pois não tinha um centro de gravidade tão baixo. Mas é normal que as pessoas façam essas afirmações...é um efeito conhecido de branqueamento de memória. Tendemos sempre a endeusar os antigos jogadores porque só nos lembramos do melhor deles. Já um jogador em atividade, lembramos com mais força aquilo que joga na atualidade, que no caso de Ronaldo, obviamente, aos 37/38 anos será sempre uma comparação injusta pois Futre deixou de jogar aos 30 anos. Foi inclusive estatisticamente o melhor no drible em 2 ou 3 anos, mesmo com o Rei do dribble, Messi, a despontar. O mesmo vale para o Ronaldo brasileiro, Ronaldinho, Zidane...tudo jogadores que tiveram 2 ou 3 epocas de alto nível, sobretudo ao nível das seleções, que hoje são endeusados quando comparados com a atual versão de CR.
