Paulo Freire: Educating to Proclaim the World

The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 72
Critical Education Theory Series, Part 8
This episode of the New Discourses Podcast continues into a second part a long miniseries exploring Paulo Freire's landmark 1985 book The Politics of Education: Culture, Power, and Liberation (amzn.to/3IJ4ZOT), and it is embedded in the broader Critical Education Theory series here (newdiscourses.com/tag/critica.... In the previous part, James Lindsay presented the ideas of the first two chapters, revealing both how religious Freire is and how Marxist. Part 1, covering the first two chapters of the book can be found here (newdiscourses.com/2022/04/pau....
In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, James tackles the next two chapters of this book, chapters three and four, wherein it becomes abundantly clear that "Culturally Relevant Teaching" (newdiscourses.com/2022/02/cri...) is an Identity Marxist repackaging of Freirean education. His discussion highlights how messianic Freire is and pointing out that, in some sense, Freire's Critical Pedagogy stands in analogous relationship to the Gospel of John for the Marxist Theology (newdiscourses.com/2022/01/the.... Freire's idea is that literacy means political literacy as understood in the Marxist way: formal education is bourgeois and Critical Education is a revolutionary praxis that can transform the oppressive state of the world. Freire's point, though, is positively religious, in the Johnnine sense in that his goal is to teach the word so the conscious can learn to speak the world. Join James Lindsay to unpack even more of what it means that all of our children now go to Paulo Freire's Marxist Sunday Schools.

    Wow. Christianity sees God as Logos; Marxism sees God as Pathos. This is brilliant. This explains, for me, why I feel so often when I listen to these podcasts that many of the explanations Marxism provides for how the world works are not entirely wrong, and are in fact congruent with a Judeo-Christian belief system. For example, the idea that humans beings speak and create existence through their vision, is not wrong at all, and in fact aligns with exactly how I understand Jordan Petersons religion based analysis. God spoke the world into existence in the beginning and created mankind in his image. Humans beings are in fact responsible for creating the world. The difference is nested in this Logos vs Pathos argument.

  • @jeffyboyreloaded

    @jeffyboyreloaded

    Really important distinction here is that inescapable original sin doesn't exist in Marxism. In Christianity, man's creations are only good if they align with God, because we are inherently flawed so we have to follow his lead because he is by definition all that is good. This means the map for "utopia" requires everyone to emulate Christ. Marx thinks the flaw in humans is inflicted upon us by other humans, humans who specifically lack awakened consciousness. This is also to say that Marx doesn't believe the slave or the prole is inherently flawed, and if they were to take control and act as they wished they could usher in utopia. In the Christian telling, flaws (sin) are inherent (due to our own actions in the garden) and only Christ can help us overcome them - in the Marxist telling flaws are inflicted upon us by the oppressor class and only the oppressed can overcome them. The only thing Marx did correctly was notice that there's a lot of not nice stuff in the world but he completely inverted the attribution and is as wrong as possible

    The alienation idea is reasonable... probably Marx's only reasonable idea. So if you find yourself following orders instead of creating, the key question is what to do about it. There are solid options like saving up to start a small enterprise (happens millions of times a day), finding work that is creative (it can happen in some organizations), etc.. Or, of course, you could also hate everything in society and especially your employer, want to destroy all of it and replace it with a forced system that after passing through authoritarian and centralized phases may eventually magically change into a kind of anarchism that is completely free and everyone is equal and has equal outcomes. Yeah, great plan. What could possibly go wrong? It just goes to show that it is very possible to diagnose a real problem and recommend a cure that is not only worse than the disease, it couldn't possibly be more worse.. I honestly don't see how it is different than recommending someone to cut their own head off to cure a headache.
