Paulk SMART trailer w/DeWalt 20V battery-powered LED lights

Using a 18V to 20V converter with USB port for a DeWalt battery, I have been able to "ghetto" together a 16ft strand of LED ribbon into a quick light system for the trailer when I am not plugged into shore power (or...if I were without my phone ...or my rechargeable LED headlamps ...or any of my three DeWalt flashlights ...or the sun, because it is daytime).
First world problems! I know......

I got this idea from the RealWorldCarpentryRemodel KZread channel! Check him out and see his idea and how he implemented it way more elegantly than I did!!!

Hey Steve. I think it was my video that introduced you to the led lights / dewalt power converter. Anyway I like the automatic feature of yours . I thought of doing a motion detector switch but haven’t yet. I think I might be inspired to do it now.

You are correct! It was you! Thanks for the cool idea. I really took a low tech approach to your system but am really happy with ambient light when not on shore power without the need of a flashlight (even lower tech). Motion detect would be cool but I am only full time in/out of the trailer during the summer so for me, that would be a real luxury. Next trailer? I would like to go “luxury” with many bells and whistles and motion lights and solar panels and marine deep cycle batteries and…and…and! Thanks for the cool idea!

Very Cool - Thank You for sharing. I didn't know you could get a USB port on a battery pack

Thanks for the comment! I took a tip from a trailer tour video from Real World Carpentry Remodeling where he uses a hardwired battery pack to power some lights. Not wanting to take the time to wire, I found a USB pack that fits my DeWalt batteries for lights when I am not plugged in otherwise. It has been very helpful and real easy to add.

Or you could make your own diy with 12 cig female, 12 volt 24 volt in car usb a usb c out adapter some wire to put on or have blade crimps for any 18 volt 20 volt tool battery

@@craftymulligar no idea but it sounds like it would be possible. I am not real knowledgeable with low voltage so I cannot say for sure.

@@joecnc3341 Hi Joe! I am currently looking for a converter for a 60V flex battery to 24V DC and if I find it, I will upgrade this bank of "just in case" lights to a 24v LED system. This 12V system is finicky with the 20V battery without an inline stepdown.

How long does lights on a battery like that last?

Thanks for the comment HT! I run the lights on a 20V 6ah battery and I only use these lights when I am on site without shore power. I have left them on overnight on accident and found them on the following morning so at least 12 hours but I swapped out the battery after that without checking. It should last a while if just using occasionally which is my experience since I can usually get to shore power. IF you are looking for options to have lights without shore power…..Renovations and Repair YT channel - Richard has a great trailer build out with solar and a battery bank for power when not plugged in to shore power. He has great ideas for his next trailer as well for self-sustained power.

What kind of run time do you get out of a single tool battery?

Thanks for the comment/question Caleb! I wish I had a firm answer for you but honestly, I don't keep mental track. I have enough batteries that I am able to swap out when I see a lag in performance and almost all of the time, when I return a tool to the trailer, I swap the battery and put the one coming off the tool onto a charger. This way all tools are always ready to go with a battery on them and the battery has 3 bars of power so I never have to worry. If I had to say one way or the other, the DeWalt original batteries last longer than the after market ones and the Waitley last longer than the other "yellow" powertech(?) batteries. It really depends on the tool its on, the aH of the battery, and what the tool is having to do. My jobsite light for instance on full with my only 8aH dewalt battery will last around 3 hours, 4 or 5 hours on low setting. That same battery on an impact driver would last all day and maybe two screwing down a floor or framing using screws. Great question......sorry I don't have a firm answer.
