Seems pretty real, possibly tempered by the wisdom of time, which itself tends to bring empathy for people even when you don't agree with those people (or don't agree with them anymore) for whatever reason. The ability to understand others doing what they want or need to do for themselves. And a lot of opposition to duos or groups breaking up is from the unrealistic expectations of fans, especially in music.

He became the songwriting talent. That's a detail that a lot of people forget. Paul wasn't that great as a songwriter early on, if you listen to those early albums they weren't anything particularly special other than Art's voice. As the albums continued, and you got to Bridge Over Troubled Water, you probably could have gotten a different vocalist and still had an amazing album, but that definitely wasn't the case early on.
