    Paul is a strong individual who has made a lot of work to be where he is at now. I only wish Paul Smith was the CEO of Gibson as well, being "odd" is ok especially if you are a hardworking genius at a certain field. Well, I do as well in a group situation when we are noodling and chatting but not in a serious interview situation (not that anyone would want to interview me). I sense that Lee was starting to get irritated and I do not blame him. I like Paul very much, he has a lot of interesting things to say and I own five of his guitars but his manners in this situation annoyed me. On the other side of the coin I thought Lee was wrong to interrogate Paul about his pickup design, Lee is a partner in a rival guitar company, why should Paul give trade sensitive information to a rival after years of expensive development. Perhaps the Captain should think about his manners as well?

    From a business perspective it's pretty amazing how PRS have gone out and done something (new) w/ their catalog that adds so much sustainability and new growth and security for the company and its employees. Sounds like they may even be adding employees. They're still finding a way to balance short term & long term when a lot of guitar companies aren't quite able to do as much in 2018. No doubt the guitar is great, I'd love to have one & will in time ($). But they'll be selling the HELL out of these and that's amazing. Still staying relevant & pushing boundaries, maintaining quality etc. I think that's to be applauded really.

    The funniest part of the beef is that PRS didn't wake up one morning and say, "We're gonna make a strat!" This is John Mayer's signature guitar. He got what he requested - end of story. I don't understand why there's a problem. If any of you people bitching about this ever got the got the opportunity to create a signature guitar, it would be just as derivative of the guitar you play most as the Silver Sky is to John's favorite Strat. Not a single one of you would have an ounce of originality. So, to quote the mighty Frank Zappa, "Shut up and play yer guitar!"

    Or it could be that he got The Dead gig and he wanted something different, which is showcased with the Super Eagle and the J-Mod, and he liked the quality and the vibe of PRS so he asked them to make something similar to his Strat. But here's the thing... Who. Cares? Don't want it? Don't buy it. It's not anybody's business what PRS, or Suhr, or Tom Andersen, or Fernandes, or Schecter, or Ibanez, or Epiphone (all have made Strat influenced guitars, or flat out copies) make. What matters is how they sound, and how they play. See Zappa quote once again.

  • @RRW276

    @RRW276

    C M I think it's that - what you mentioned about the Dead & Co sound & the Super Eagle. I also think John found someone (PRS) & a company that speaks his language and that's part of why he's gone full force with them, and it makes sense. Lee talked a bit about Clapton when Paul mentioned him, but Clapton may be at a point where he's invented (I have to say invented) all the tones he's going to create. Whereas, I believe Mayer might be heading in a new tone direction, a new stage, and PRS was able to see his vision to help him get there where maybe Fender couldn't or didn't want to. Either way, love it or hate it, it's going to be a great ride to see where John takes this next - as a huge Mayer fan & especially of Dead & Co. I've seen them twice & it's an exp I'll never forget.

    I tend to check stuff on KZread before I buy and I become taken in by the builders and their personalities. Paul is great, Josh from JHS is great, Bill Collings was amazing. Their vision and design reflect their personalities and right or wrong, draws me to their product. Paul is brilliant and I love his guitars. Thank Captain and Pete!!

    PRS is a tough interview! lol He get's onto tangents which lead him to other tangents, and the ears turn off. He does seem like a genuinely good guy though, and he deserves mountains of credit for breaking into a highly competitive industry and wrecking his way into establishing a "big 3" in guitar making with the inclusion of PRS into that exclusive group. Probably my biggest consolation with Gibson being in the trouble they are currently experiencing is that no matter what happens with them, PRS will be around pushing high quality, well designed instruments to the masses. That's actually comforting to know. Great vid and thanks!

    Quite a bit of that is the fact that he's sort of "responding" to all the keyboard warriors out there in this interview. So he's a bit on the defensive here. Regardless of how you feel about how he "came off" in this interview, the guy is a brilliant guitar maker, and makes some of the best guitars on the planet. I've been a proud owner and player of one for decades and wouldn't trade it for the world. It took all of a year of touring with one and playing it 4 hours a night, and I've been recommending them ever since. Someone would have to pry my custom 22 out of my cold dead hands to get a hold of it. :)
