Miles, you may have heard of this before but when Paul Newman won the SCCA National Sports Car Championship he was called up to the podium to receive his trophy and to speak to the crowd. He said something to the effect that "...this award means a hell of a lot more than any Oscar ever did!!" The crowd went nuts applauding that little speech. They absolutely loved it!! Think about just how many other movie stars could ever be in the position to be able to say that. He was a very unique individual, for certain.

@Miles Rains Well said...and VERY true. Hope you're able to read this, because you were concise in your description of Paul Newman, and yet in the short comment, you pretty much summed Paul up perfectly, IMO. I don't know what it is (e.g. the times, technology, perceived self-importance, etc.) with today's actors, but seems like 99% can't compare to a true "Man's Man" that Paul was. And while he obviously had to know HOW legendary a figure he was, he really could care less lol. NOTHING contrived that emanated from that man. Like the saying goes, "they don't make 'em like that anymore" REALLY applies to Newman. And as far as I've read and heard about him, he never once strayed from his looooongtime wife (Joanne Woodward), despite obviously being one of the most handsome Hollywood actors ever. RIP to a TRULY GREAT man.

I'll never forget the scene in the movie "Winning" when Paul Newman was playing a racing team member of Robert Wagner and returned to his motel room to catch his wife, literally, in bed with Wagner. As Paul unlocked and opened the motel room door into this incredible scene, the audience was expecting to see Paul beat the crap out of Wagner. The entire movie theater was frozen awaiting the fight scene, but in true Paul Newman cool he quietly turned around and.after closing the door he walked slowly to his car in the parking lot. Deep, deep into dazed thought he attempted to climb into his personal Thunderbird through the window with out opening the door as do race car drivers entering into their race cars. Only banning his head on the cars post brought him back into reality..... I though that was the absolute coolest thing a guy could do because had he started to beat Wagner up his wife, as they do, would have jumped on his back and try and pull him of fof her lover. That could have only made things much worse to an already destroyed ego. I was just in high school when I saw Winning and years later as life would have it, I too caught my wife as Paul did his in the movie. I'm no Paul Newman but for one moment, I too, in real life turned and walked away and was somehow a bit as cool as Paul Newman.

Seriously though. Mystery, reserve, elegance... they’re no longer sexy in today’s society. You have to be loud and brash. Heck, this level of beautiful combined with a reserved personality is no longer desired or revered. Too hold yourself as a gift, to allow yourself to be enjoyed for not just your beauty but charm and others to appreciate that...Shame.

Oh please, Leno was one of the first late night talk show hosts to make his political views known. He didn’t make his show fully about politics, but he never hid where he stood (he ridiculously campaigned the hell out of Schwarzenegger for governor on his show). And the current Tonight Show host? He is faaar from the most politically outspoken talk show host out there. I’m not a fan of him at all, but the fact is he is ALL about entertainment. Sure, he’s rightfully spoken out against a certain dear leader a few times, but politics isn’t his thing at all. As for the others, sorry but that’s the world we’re living in. If calling out an imbecile fascist reality show star night after night for the outrageous things he says and does, then good for anyone that does it! If you support him, then obviously it’s worthless trying to explain why most sane people have a problem with him. But if the current administration is a deranged circus, then talk show hosts can’t ignore and not joke about (they shouldn’t apologize to anyone for not being heartless conservatives like Hollywood-hating right-wing America wishes they were). So yeah. Also, Paul was one of the most politically involved actors. And guess what? His views were everything that cons hate about modern Hollywood actors.

It’s bittersweet watching this. I lost my wonderful father recently and he was literally the spitting image of Paul Newman. People would actually approach us in the street years ago and my mum would say it’s not him before you ask. Watching here now puts a lump in my throat as all I see is my dad. That aside I was also a big fan of this guy. “Cool hand Luke!’ Ironically, my Father was also named Michael Newman and to be cruel to me seeing I didn’t inherit my dads looks, my mom called me Paul. So yep I really have his name.

*"Hombre"* is Paul Newman's finest movie, in my opinion. Fantastic human being. His interview by James Lipton on *"Inside the Actor's Studio"* showcased just how humble of a man he was; by never taking himself too seriously; by being willing to laugh at himself as well as having a wicked sense of humor; and by always maintaining a sense of how fortunate he was to have been blessed by God with incredible good looks, a decent physique, a well modulated and pleasing voice, and the necessary talent to excel as a good husband and father; as an actor, as a very successful businessman, and as a semi-professional race car driver.

My neighbor owned one of his 1970 racing Corvettes. I sat in it when I was 16 in downtown San Mateo. A train passed by about 15 feet away when the car was starting up and I couldn’t hear it. Loudest thing I’ve ever heard. Then I got to take a lap at Laguna Seca. It was pretty cool.

What an incredible guy. He's one my favorites. He went through a period of drinking beer that lasted for years. He carried it off well, however his wife laid down the law and he quit. He aged well and quitting drinking probably saved his life. I don't know of anyone who keep racing until into his 80's. He will always be my favorite guy of all time. Too bad the big "C" took him out. He gave so much to humanity. RIP, my friend.

A lot of actors in his generation drank heavily and died from complications due to drinking or heavy smoking like Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Montgomery Clift and others. John Wayne was 4-5 pack a day smoker and drank heavily but died of cancer from exposure to radiation on a film set.
