One of the most highly coveted actors that ever lived on this planet. He was an extremely rare breed. Just a great person beyond his acting ability. I’m sure GOD smiled at him when he entered into Heaven. His extreme generosity from his food company is amazing. Donating all the profits to charities. We miss you Mr. Newman. RIP. 🙏

@@googleyeyed5814 Well, Mr. Eyed, surely SOMETHING critical can be said. Not that it follows you're a Democrat, I would not make that accusation lightly. I think Paul Newman was a brilliant actor and a > fine man. But, apparently, when Bill Buckley threatened to sock Gore Vidal in the goddamn face at the 1968 Democratic convention, assuring him he would stay "plastered" Mr. Newman appeared outside Buckley's trailer to register his displeasure. Vidal had called Buckley a "crypto-Nazi" - before crypto was a currency and Buckley had called Vidal a "queer" - before queer was a compliment. Howard K. Smith was sent into a dither and a tizzy. So, I suppose admirers of WFB could argue that Mr. Newman had imprudently inserted himself into that memorable catfight. Perhaps so. That is the only criticism I could manage and Mr. Newman lived 82 years. Pretty good record at that.

I met Paul Newman at the The Whole in the Wall Gang Camp about 15 years ago. It was "Donors Day" and we were rained out. After lunch we were told to board some school buses for camp tours. I was with my son. We got on the wrong bus. The bus we got on was small and we sat in the back. We were alone until a man in a green army jacket got on and walked to the back and it was Paul Newman. He introduced himself and spent several minutes talking to us. My son had no clue who he was. After the family go on, we drove to the cabin they donated to the Camp. I told my son to standby and let the family get off and we would head in another direction. As we got off the bus, we started walking away. Mr. Newman noticed us and called after us. I explained we got on the wrong bus and were not part of the donor family. He said that's ok, and he gave us a personal tour of the new Camp Counselor Cabin. He spent about 15 minutes with us and we bantered back and forth during his tour. At the end of his tour, he was whisked away by a media type to take photos with the family. My son and I walked away after the media type said it would be a while for photos. My only regret was we didn't get a photo with Paul Newman. Although I have a good memory of a nice afternoon, I did have 15 minutes walking with fame.

I greatly admired Paul Newman’s acting ability, his charity work, sense of humor, intelligence and of course I loved his good looks. One thing to remember is not to put anyone on a pedestal or you will be disappointed. Paul had his demons and to his credit he dealt with them as all good men do. You will see them in Ethan Hawks documentary but do not despair. He was human like the rest of us and did the best he could. God bless him.

@Joanna Kent. Mr Newman was in a film in the late 60s called 'The Secret War of Harry Frigg'. Mom and I were hundreds of miles from home at the university my 9 years older brother was attending. My 7 years older sister was also in school in the area, and she and Mom needed some time with my brother, likely including alcoholic beverages, so my 12 year old presence was not 'invited', instead I was left at the local movie theater for the afternoon. My very first chance to watch a movie without adult supervision, and my sitter was Paul Newman's movie about some guy named Harry Frigg. I was in heaven! An afternoon at the movies by myself and Paul was in charge. Don't recall the details of the movie, and I was not old enough to be concerned about anything other than I was given the reigns over myself for a few hours! Frigg may have been the movie he was in just before 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. That one afternoon at the movie with Paul Newman was like a rite of passage for me. I have been a huge fan ever since. He also was into racing and that was something we both loved! I envy your experience with Paul as a racer. I bet his side job as an actor never even came up! His abilities behind the wheel were well known, and other professional racers respected his talent as a driver. He drove race cars, his side gig was acting!

“I never felt that I had a gift to perform, but it was something I wanted badly enough. I kept after it.” Hearing this, comforts me because being an actor, I feel this way. I want it bad enough and I love it and I want to work at it. It’s about hard work. Love all his films and philanthropy. Great human and great actor.

Paul Newman, from everything I have heard about him, especially after his death, was one of those actors in Hollywood who I would say was truly a class act. After his death, I heard on the radio that he gave extensively to charity, which was something I already had heard years before, but was revealed was he gave more to charity in secret than he did publicly, and that made me go: "Wow, what a cool guy." I cannot read the hearts of other people, but I would say many who are in the public eye give to charity so as to bolster their own image, and given that in Hollywood image is everything, supposedly, I guess all of them have to do that to a certain degree. However the true act of giving is giving, but not wanting any glory for it, and that's what Paul Newman did, by giving secretly to charity like he did. I can't say I think much of celebrities, in fact I really don't care about them period, but I must say that Paul Newman is one who will always have my respect.

Kind of disappointed they didn't touch upon Cool hand Luke. I saw that a couple years after it came out around 1969. I was 10 years old living outside of Detroit in Royal Oak Michigan. There was a double feature in the little downtown at the Main theater. It was Bonnie and Clyde and Cool hand Luke. I knew I saw two incredible adult like movies. And I was only 10 years old. And I really thought he was going to say race car driver if he was able to do another profession besides acting. I actually saw him one time, being an avid race fan at the IndyCar race in 1995 in wisconsin, Road America. Still have it on video
