The accent guy from Wired Technique Critique explains this "ar" vowel dipthong sound really well. Stephen's doing a hard palate R when Paul is doing a soft palate A. It's the difference between pushing out an R from the tongue going forward, vs swallowing an A from the tongue moving backward. Try saying "scarlet army" with your tongue as far back as you can

@theflyingshamanthegreatmin9788 we can't. That's like saying that the English can correct us on our pronunciation. They can't. We have Irish accents. We're all native speakers. Just like they can't correct Scottish or Welsh people, except for 'professional' English. Them telling us to say THirty THree instead of Tirty-Tree would be considered snobbish and rude. Same goes for Americans. The word 'Ireland' doesn't belong to us. The British came up with it to name Éire.

Best thing to do when trying to speak with an Irish accent is please don't try at all because there are multiple Irish regional accents not the one stereotypical offensive Hollywood Irish accent that we hear time and time again.

Canada is a ginormous country of many accents. I've never been to the stereotypical "Canadian accent" place, because it doesn't exist. Don't do it, because when people get it wrong, it's just sad. Tip #1: maybe somewhere down east, someone says "aboot", but I've never heard it.

Yes I agree. Trying to do a general " Irish accent " doesn't make sense since every part of Ireland has a different accent and most of the 32 counties have a lot more than one accent It just hurts our ears. Paul Mescal is using his normal kildare accent here but in " normal people ", he made a good attempt at an accent from the North west. At least I thought so. But I'm from Dublin so what would I know. I just wish Americans wouldn't even try.

Maybe if someone were to come to one region of Ireland and live there for a while and then focused on that one accent, it might be less awful. It just seems that the vocal coaches who train people in "Oirish" accents have literally never met an Irish person.

Stephen Colbert missed asking a good question. “ I heard you panicked when you read the scripts?” If wasn’t over the sex scenes. It was all the car scenes when he is driving around, mostly with the actress playing his mother. The problem was he didn’t know how to drive. So without telling that to the producers or casting director, he quickly dashed out to get driving lessons - and a license.

The irish "ar" is done with the tongue and the top of the throat, in the back of the mouth...make a circular opening at the end of the soft palate and say "ar" without ever closing it...I teach voice, and diction/body awareness is key...bet colbert could do it great if not for how heavily he pronounces his "r" sounds.

The first pitfall is ending up with the toora loora US movie leprechaun sound, trying to be very light and florid. If Irish people spoke like that in theatres 100 years ago, they don't now. It sounded like Stephen was going into elvish speaking mode with the florid r's for a bit, there's some grit to conversational speech. Get the Young Offenders on and give the Cork accent a whirl, that'd be unreal

I think the trick with an Irish 'R' it to think of it as lazy. Stephen's R is working way too hard. Think of the placement of the tongue in the mouth in a R sound and then relax the tongue totally like its barely doing any work. In Stephens accent the tongue is still turning upwards in the mouth, he should practice saying R without moving his tongue at all.
