Paul McCartney surprises Paul Simon on live television

Ойын-сауық

Hard to believe this really happened, but it did. There was Paul Simon busy promoting his Rhythm of the Saints album and answering all the usual questions on the Saturday morning kids' show Going Live, when all of a sudden who should phone in? Only Paul McCartney! This was broadcast on 13th October 1990, and the surprise on everyone's faces (including presenters Phillip Schofield and Sarah Greene, who clearly weren't in on it) is something to behold. Definitely one of those "moments" in televisual history.
(Please remember that this is an off-air VHS recording, so don't go expecting 1080p HD quality. I'm fairly certain that this video isn't commercially available, and I've uploaded it for its historic interest only. That said, if you are a copyright holder and object, please don't hesitate to contact me.)

Paul Simon remained friends to this day with Kathy Chitty ,the woman whom he met and became involved with romantically during his time in England in 1964. She was a teenager at the time. He wrote at least two songs about her ( Homeward Bound , Kathy's Song) and she is pictured on the cover of his album Paul Simon Songbook. She was shy and preferred not to continue with the relationship when Paul started to become famous with Art Garfunkel

The clincher for me is that Paul Simon doesn't question that it's him. Also, Paul McCartney appeared on this show in person more than once. And they'd just played his latest video a few minutes before. And done a segment about John Lennon's 50th birthday earlier. Plus, if it was all a wind-up, it's notably missing a punchline.

I could be wrong. But it doesn't sound a thing like Paul. No liverpool drawl -- except a bit at the end. People were notorious for doing this back then. Calling shows disguised as a celebrity. I don't know how well Paul Simon knew Paul. Listen carefully. What do you think?

  • @VideotapeFTW

It's possible I've been swayed because I've got the whole episode. There was a slot early on about John Lennon (being the week of what would have been his 50th birthday), and they'd followed that up a bit later by showing Paul McCartney's latest video, a live version of the Beatles track Birthday. So when Paul apparently turns up during the phone-in on Paul Simon's birthday... well, it all fits together nicely. Paul actually appeared on the show in person more than once, so the possibility of it being an impostor never even occurred to me. I don't think there's anything unusual about someone who doesn't usually introduce himself using his full name doing so on the phone. And I know what you're saying about 'prank' calls, but back then the fashion was to do this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJaardSelMzcfbg.html kzread.info/dash/bejne/gHmfpJRuhsLVp5s.html If this is an impersonator, what's the punchline? Surely they'd have done something funny to make one of the Pauls look a bit silly, wouldn't they? I could be wrong, but I don't see a joke here.
