Paul McCartney - Blackbird
Live Glastonbury Music Festival 2004
Lyrics:
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
Black bird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
all your life
you were only waiting for this moment to be free
Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.
Blackbird fly, Blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.
Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise,oh
You were only waiting for this moment to arise, oh
You were only waiting for this moment to arise

I thought the same thing. It's not easy, I mean their applause is wonderful, but you're thinking, um, please let me keep my guitar going. :) I don't know if they have mics that help them tune out to the crowd somewhat to reflect their own singing, I think it's something like this. That, and of course, ages of practice. :)

Yeah, about the clapping - in a huge venue like this the speed of sound makes it sound like the audience is clapping out of step - but to their ears they are perfectly in sync with the (delayed) sound....add that same delay from the clapping audience to the on-stage mic and you have quite a difference.

I sang this song to my father on his death bed. That was 9 years ago. He started to Heath very hard and I guess they call that the death rattle. As soon as I started singing he stopped the rattle. He wasn’t talking but was still with me. It gave him comfort and allowed my brother and mom to make it to the hospital. It was the four of us in there like it had always been. He gently passed a few minutes after My mom and brother arrived. It was very peaceful. I didn’t even cry until it set in that he had just passed. He was a great man and was my best friend. Still miss him every day. But I know he’s out there flying free.

The Beatles... 4 young men, 1 had timing unsurpassed, 1 had a great guitar playing coming into his own right towards the last couple of years. 1 was a genius and could make the guitar hum and buzz writing many classics. 1 was a god playing many instruments, writing many classics and still going today. Together they were a force of nature. Okay McCartmey did some duds outside of the Beatles but boy was he talented and when he goes the world should weep
This song is my favorite song on the White Album as well as Dear Prudence.
This man is a treasure

I love this, my mom just had a stroke but is taking her broken wings and learning to fly again. Thank you Lord!
Paul was so ahead of his time. Just a true musical genius.
I have been learning this song recently at age 67 as part of a 'bucket list'. As a life long devotee of the so-called "popular song", I don't think I can think of a more inspired Beatles' song .... so simple a thought ... and yet so profound and poetic (if Wordsworth could sing, he might have come up with such an idea!). Above all - a rarity in pop music - a song that's not "all about me" ... who knew?
Voice is still great and a super performer ignoring an audience who cannot seem to keep time with the music. Love the song.
I like that Paul plays the song differently everytime in terms of feel and tempo. It gives the song a real personal feeling to the moment.
Dad used to sing and play this song all throughout my life growing up. I'm 28 now. I lost him last year and made sure to play it at his funeral. Tear up so much everytime I hear hear it.

Despite his age, Paul is still a music fan he could sit on his millions and enjoy it but his pleasure in living is to share his music with us and make it known to future generations

RE: The out of time clapping, I was there and didn't notice it, you don't when you're in the moment but i suppose you do when you're sat at home watching a 15 year old video. I do remember crying like a baby at the sight of the world's greatest songwriter performing one of my favourite songs at my favourite festival . It was very special indeed and a memory I will hold to my dying day. So yeah, a crowd of people who have been at Glastonbury for up to four days clapping out of time at 10:30 on a Saturday night. If that's what you want to take away from this, then you're missing the point in a spectacular fashion.

I hear ya admiral. I came here from a couple tutorials on here for how to play the song. Marty Schwartz said he heard Paul comment at one of his shows that all the youtubers were teaching it wrong: so I came here to the horses mouth as it were! But yeah, the magic here is something. I been playing and teaching myself guitar for years and know something of what it is to learn a guitar part in the comfort of your own home. But then perform in front of people, you need to keep your head for it not to fall apart. Then stand in front of a sea of people and pull this off without missing a beat or a bad note is somethings else! Grateful for his whole back catalogue- all the ‘silly love songs’. It took me a while to get my hands stretched out to accomplish it, but now it's not a problem at all. I can do it with my eyes closed now.

Actually if you played it with your first finger and pinky you wouldn't have to stretch at all. It took me about one hour to learn it. But I haven't mastered it yet.

I like to use my thumb,1st and middle fingers because it works best for me. Also,I tune down one whole-step from standard e. I play this on my Epiphone "Inspired by" 64`Texan. Take care and ROCK`ON! From Sioux City,Iowa.

@Greg Normal I love all the Wings stuff, Band On The Run, Live and Let Die, With a little luck, and Blackbird, My Love (does it good), Hey Jude....... and love 'Standing Stone'. In fact, pretty much everything he has ever done! I admire the person he is, which really comes through his lyrics. I loved Linda as well. Have a good day!

It's actually about the sixties US civil rights movement, inspired by black schoolgirls he saw on TV trying to get into school at Little Rock. In sixties Liverpool a "bird" was a girl but I don't suppose he'd ever admit nowadays to anything so obviously un-PC!

It's so sad to see he play without his old friends, the friends who were with him from 18 and now you see they unfortunately passed away and he is alone. :( Rip John🖤 (today is his 40th Anniversary) Rip George 🖤
I love this man
Not even kidding, this song makes me cry EVERY time, since the day I first heard it.

This song epitomizes McCartney's versatility and genius. You will appreciate this piece even more if you are learning to play guitar. You will marvel at the complexity and innovative techniques of the chord structure and the finger-picking pattern (in addition to the hauntingly beautiful and poetical lyrics). Definitely right up there among the greatest acoustic guitar compositIons ever. Take a bow, Sir Paul!
This song is so f&*king beautiful.
What a beautiful song!!!
The world is rarely graced with someone of such pure genius. I love the simplicity of this song, just a guitar and vocals. No fancy autotune or electronic instruments, just a man, his guitar, and his talent. Truly a work of greatness. This man is so special that the entire Earth will shed a tear upon his passing. There is no one like him. Rock On Forever Paul.

paul McCarthney is nothing short of a legend! this is perhaps one o his best songs.
Come on people. Stop complaining about the clapping and just enjoy the song already. That's why you're here for.
I love this song and I love when Paul played ▶️ 😍

this video taught me how to play this song! I like how it zoomed in on his hands a lot, it helped me pick it up. if he ever watched KZread videos of himself, particularly this one, he should know he inspired another lefty to start playing the guitar. it's such a beautiful song that I had to learn it. pulled a hendrix on my mom's old guitar and decided to give it a whirl

He has inspired me to get my guitar out too. I'll never play before huge audiences like he does. . . But, if you watch his interviews, he consistently says that he would still play - even if no one came to his concerts anymore. He just LOVES music. That's a great motive, I gotta admit. That's a really pure motive, actually. It inspired me, anyway.
The man is a genius. I had the good fortune to see him live, and he played this song. Pure magic.
the greatest musician/song writer of all time...bar none!

Amazing how Paul seems to sing to each person despite his being in front of thousands he cannot even see! Gifted!
First song I ever learned to fully play on guitar. In hindsight starting with fingerpicking might've been throwing myself in the deep end, but stuck with it till I had it. It never gets old!
The audience's clapping was only a hindrance to Paul's perfect guitar performance.
Everyone knows McCartney's a bit of a legend. Awesome song...and his voice is still on man.
I can barely play this normally, never mind while singing. What a legend
Paul is a genius very talented. Simple an brilliant
My dad used to play this all the time, i miss those simpler time
I'm so glad youtube exist for me to discover Magnificent Songs.
OMG I LOVE THIS SONG THIS SHOULD BE TRENDING!!!
Don't feel bad, this song is about as pure as life gets. I've always felt blessed to live in this time. I got to laugh hysterically at Monty Python, I got to listen to the Beatles, particularly this song. Also, I got to live free, play computer games into my old age and post this comment to you. Count your blessings, Blackbird.
