Mr. Blues Power shows off Free powerhouse guitarist Paul Kossoff's 1959 Gibson Les Paul burst.
Given his commitment to Les Pauls, it’s fitting that Nichols was born in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the birthplace of the guitar’s namesake inventor. Now, Nichols is a global ambassador of Gibson Guitars, an honor shared by only four other guitarists. And, since his last Rig Rundown, he was honored with a signature Epiphone guitar. In this new look at his rig, he shares his legion of trusty Les Pauls, as well as why he prefers simplicity when it comes to amps and pedals.

It’s still hard to believe that when “All Right Now” was recorded, the oldest member of the band was 20.

Fantastic sounding guitar made even better with Kossofs vibrato. Peter Green, Snowy White and Gary Moore were also masters of the Les Paul 1959.
Paul Kossoff was my first favorite guitar player and still in my top hand full!
Paul Kosoff soul is still living in that guitar....I can hear it...

That midrange honk just hits you right between the eyes.
Paul Kosoff was a big influence on my playing .That’s were I got my vibrato technique from .Paul was such a great player with fantastic tone .
I discovered Jared at my local watering hole in Ottawa Canada ("the brass monkey") and I was totally blown away by Jared's presence, energy and just total kick-assery. I left an instant fan and have been ever since!
So sweet! Great tone and picking by Jared James! Thanks for the interview John 😎👍!!!
I've been listening to so many guitarists for years and to this day no one achieves such captivating vibrato as Paul. Miss him. My favorite song of him is Molten Gold

I saw Free in Glasgow in 1970, and this may well have been the guitar Koss was playing.
Fantastic guitar... legendary... classic Les Paul magic...thank you for documenting it, dude...
Two things most of us guitar players want. Paul Kossoff's guitar, and Paul Kossoff's vibrato.

Jared James, I luv u bro, you're the real keeper of the vibe. Bless you!
great feel on the playing sounds awesome no sweep diminished arpeggios , string skipping whole tone scales just the sounds a guitar should make
Had the honor of jamming with Jared last year - great guy, possibly too humble. I think I even got to play his 1952 Les Paul.
I have the #90 Kossoff custom shop I bought in Thailand. Great piece!

Its not that uncommon to hear vibrato with the width and speed Koss used in blues. We think of rock music but this was just him playing blues in a rock band. Theres a ton of people with vibratos like this but they dont use it as much….
Has the respect to play Free tunes on that guitar. Well done. Could unplug and it would sound beautiful.
notice lately, we've seen greeny, Duane's burst, Pauls guitar and some others showing up in the hands of the newer gen? I feel like the guitar gods are smiling and the old guys who retired from Gibson and Fender gotta be ever so proud of their legacy!!
A worthy guitar
I would love to have this guitar.... Jared is such a killer guitarist and likable dude
The Kossoff burst is iconic, for sure, but the most impressive thing about this clip is the fact that JJN sounds just as good with his €600 Epiphone. The tone on this guys fingers is amazing. Cheers. HM
In case y'alls ears didn't pick it up, that's some cool cool finderpicking. Third time watching the vid. Now I understand why he has his signature amp.
Jared, curly hair, curly lead and 59 Les Paul. What a combination.
Danny Kirwan and Paul Kossoffs vibratos were the best

I got that Early Nuge Vibe too. Older I get though I’m agreeing it’s the player more than the guitar. I’d love to own a Holy Grail Les Paul but probably not sound much better than I do on my ‘98 Standard. It’s a good one too.

What amp/pedals do you use for Kossoff tone? Thanks
Free will always one of my favorite bands. Period!
Well he played the shit out of that thing, just what it needed!
Dude, i`am making a stank face the whole time you play that beast
this is a tone that i have pursued. I get close but always thought almost... Im not a cork sniffer but its the guitar. first not he played on it i was like thats pauls sound. I always said any lp will get you there. I might have been wrong.
What a geetar!!!!
Is this the guitar that has the repaired broken neck?
Kossoff never died his soul was just transferred to that guitar
That is dark! And very clean....are these pick ups still alive?
I actually have an Agile 3100, that looks similar, (not anywhere near as cool!), and even has a similar tone! It just seems to come alive on Koss riffs, (not that i can really play them any good!), got it 2nd, i know it has Gibson pots, but nothing to identify the pups. Don't care if they are the stock Agiles or not, never gunna change them, just love it!
What the hell is wrong with some of these negative comments?🙄That sounds great! An iconic burst played by a great player!

Bangsaaaddd tone na 🙌🔥🔥
JJN was born to play that guitar.
Hell yeah Fried Okra!
This isn‘t the guitar used on All Right Now That was most likely the stripped Les Paul seen in the 70 Isle of Wight Show
McLovin it!
One thing about Koss, he never used pedals, just him his guitar and amp. For me, Koss is the only one on a par with Page for the passion in his playing, so damn emotive. I always say Koss made the guitat Sting!

The next greenie value
You can tell he's a REAL guitar player because when he stops playing he's breathing hard and totally stoaked. He deserves his own Blackstar.
I think that's the slowest I've ever heard JJN play. Is he stoned? 🤣
This guy is the new Cesar Gueikian
I've listened so many brilliant, not so briiant average and shockingly poor guitarists trying to get kosoffs sound. But in my opinion none come very close to him. Sorry guys. None of house can get the free sound right. What a legend!
Amazing the tone in that Guitar ❤ and guess the value of it ? Its insured for $2 million
That looks like the guitar Paul Kossoff threw up in the air at the last gig by Free. The guitar he threw went like thirty feet up and when it landed the neck broke at the fifth fret. Some genius rebuilt it but I can’t remember the guy’s name.
I mean it's got a good tone, but if that's Paul Kossoff main 59, it just shows that the tone is in the players hands. The Les Paul that I always seen pictures of there is no finish left at all.
Jared = Phil X
I love all your rig rundowns very much but you’re doing some artist that you’ve already had on before for a second time when you haven’t even done some of my all time favorites even once yet. Is he playing that through a blackstar? Something sounds off with that 59
Greeny's brother, sister, 2nd cousin once removed?
I love... "Oh, they've seen it!"
I didn't think it was going to sound like a guitar. And then it played it and it sounded like a guitar! Vintage is best!
Almost eye to eye with Bolinger, tall be tall.
so is that a original 1959?
Ich denke das ist nicht die original Version, seine LP war vom Lack befreit.
Top 1/2 dozen celebrity played ‘59 bursts. Insure with Lloyds of London.
you played the opening chord wrong man!..kossoff placed his little finger on the E string sounding an A note together with the rest of that A chord....to give it a more heavier sound!
Greeny substitute
If TJ Miller was a rock star he'd be JJN
It's like if Ray Lewis (an NFL linebacker) played guitar. I would not even let this guy play my 2002 Chinese Stratocaster that I paid $31.50 for, much less something important. It is impossible to copy this guy. The way he picks with his index finger looks bizarre and he has his thumb ready to go too, so it is almost like he has 2 picking hands with 2 picks. He can go so fast while still have amazing clarity and tone. Jared is one of my current favorite guitar players. He's like Ted Nugent, X 2.
that guitar loves to talk
I love the rockin sounds, but I always want to hear these straight up clean, just a bit, so to get a baseline as to what comes out of the guitar before it gets processed and eq'd and overdrived. Kinda like over-roasting coffee, at some point all kinda seems the same.
Kossoff didn't top wrap/ TW changes the attack making it sound like a Jr. instead of a LP Standard.

Nostalgia is very expensive, after watching a couple of guys on KZread compare a few '59's and '60's LP's to a Epiphone Standard '60's LP, very few people would ever know you're playing a 63 year old gem!! In fact, I'd bet many people would choose the Epiphone as the old gem, because the sound difference is so minimal!
Kossoff would sound like Kossoff on any guitar. It's the player not the axe/amp

Tbf, Kos could have made any guitar sing, none of the greats from that era were gear geeks, kept it simple and played it loud.
