What a wonderful turn of phrase he has...and how he beautifully captures the everyday...the mundane, he speak to the heart of ordinary people. Far too good to be so little known outside of Australia.

I missed out on his set at the carousel in Melbourne back in the early 90's and I was walking up a lane next to the club with a mate when there was Paul loading in the side door with his band. We stopped and he found time to talk to us and I was struck by the mans humility and complete lack of pretension. Wonderful human, and a supremely talented one also.

I finally got to see Mr Kelly last year for the last show of his Making Gravy tour here on Brisvegas. It was on 21st of Dec and those in Oz know that as Gravy Day. Brilliant gig supporting acts were involved in his set as well. My 17yr old boy loved it. I hope I get to see him one more time before I shuffle off.

Paul Kelly, the greatest storyteller! I remember when i saw him in Stockholm, it was 400 people in the audience. When Paul entered the stage i swear you could hear a needle falling on the floor... So much respect... And i think he started with "If I could start today again", it was magic!

Have that on DVD & lucky to have heard Paul with his band ( including Linda & Vika) do that song a couple times. Always works best with a minimum of accompaniment I think. 🙂 The songs sung on this video above, I heard another when he toured that album around it’s time of release. First heard PK playing a small venue to about a dozen people ( including me) back in about 1986. He played the first set solo like here, started with Woody Guthrie’s Pastures of Plenty , then over next 2 sets, joined by his guitarist then finally the whole band. Highly memorable. And yes the crowd built a little to about maybe 50 people in the place. 😊

Yes a fond memory. Met PK 20 months ago & related that “ First hearing” to him. Told him I recognised way back then, that he had “great scope” when he started with Woody, then went on to sing Hank William’s Your Cheating Heart, followed by his own good early songs. He’s a quiet man but he smiled broadly and laughed at my recollection.
