    I love your humor! Look at all these pots. I may as well wash these pots since I don’t have a dog😄 I am planning on getting a greyhound myself after I have a fence built and a dog door installed. I work eight hours a day, so I am away from home more than eight hours at a time. The only way I figure I can get around this is to leave the dog in a crate and schedule to have a dog walker stop by for a half hour about half way through the time I’m away. I would like to eventually just be able to give the dog free roam of the house and use the dog door to go outside and do business. I figure I can schedule the dog walker until the dog can get over any possible separation anxiety, and therefore be more safe to not leave confined to the crate.

    You definitely have the right idea, leaving a new dog/puppy alone for 8+ hours without a bathroom break or any interaction is going to make for a very unhappy dog that will act out! It'll take awhile for you to finally be comfortable with your dog being out of the crate while you're gone, and you have to give them additional unsupervised access to the home in increments. You'll know when the time is right :) but that isn't to say that they still might cause a little trouble every once in awhile, that's why I had a Furbo to check in on her while I was at work, and that put my mind at ease. I definitely recommend it during training, it also doubles as home security! Best of luck, Nathan, and thank you for the kind words!

    Loved the skits! You actually doused yourself in treats to make a point that's commitment 😂👌 I've had my Phoebe for a bit over 2 weeks now and we're dealing with separation anxiety too. I'm thinking to try the treat dispensing camera. The other day I got the vacuum robot going and she stayed quiet watching it but I cant be vacuuming nonstop every day ha. Thanks for sharing, great tips!

    Thank you "Michalis9" 😂 the camera is great for your peace of mind if you have to leave the house, you just download the app and check it anytime you want. It worked wonders when Zelda was younger. The vacuum is a great idea! Zelda hated those self driving vacuums, but it definitely keeps them occupied as they actively avoid that vacuum demon 😆

    Hi Paul, Zelda never was a racing dog--am I right? I have been watching Magnus (Rescue) Greyhound videos too and his owner uses a crate and covers it because it is a private space for the dog much like they were used to in their racing career. He also leaves the crate door open at all times. Should you also not walk your dog immediately when you get home? If I cannot wait eight hours to use the bathroom then why would I expect my do dog to do so? Also, greyhounds naturally sleep 18 hours a day from what I am hearing. It is their nature, correct? Love your videos! I am eager to get my greyhound.

  • @PJBchannel

    Correct! I got her at four months old. Leaving the crate door open is fine once the dog is fully housebroken and they have earned your trust; it is for their safety and to prevent them from destroying your home and possessions; this is especially true when you're dealing with puppies, not so much grown adults/ex-racing dogs. Other than them possibly going to the bathroom inside your home, they can chew up electrical cords, get into poisonous household items, and destroy your valuables. Zelda's crate door is always open now and she goes there to relax or to feel safe. In the beginning however, if I had to leave the house or I knew I couldn't keep a watchful eye on her, I would always leave her in the crate until I could give her proper attention. I wasn't overly concerned about cleaning up #1 or #2, more so I was afraid she would injure herself or worse. When you get home, wait about 3 minutes until you even acknowledge them (if you're dealing with a dog that has SA). Then you can take them out of the crate and go outside. You would be surprised at how long dogs can hold in #1 and #2. Ideally, don't let them go longer than 6 hours at a time between bathroom trips. Yes, Greyhounds have mastered the art of sleeping and relaxing :)

    Great video! I'm going through training with my greyhound now. It's been 3 months. I went from 1 second to as high as 22 minutes, but lately she has been whining more than before, now I'm back down to 5 minutes. Did you ever experience that? It's like all of my progress has been whiped away 😩.

  • @PJBchannel

    I definitely experienced that. How old is your Greyhound? One of the most important and useful ways to lessen the separation anxiety is to get your dog exhausted. Have them run around, go for walks, teach them tricks and have them use their mental energy. This will all exhaust them out. And the second thing is to distract them with a treat when you leave, give them a bully stick, a stuffed kong toy with frozen peanut butter, etc. Hope this helps!

    One more thing, separation anxiety will go away eventually, especially if you're dealing with a puppy. They grow out of it. Dont be discouraged!

    I have another question for ya. The last couple of days my grey started climbing on the bed. I guess being 3 weeks since I got her shes starting to get comfy! I'm not sure how I feel about having her on the bed though. Have you tried getting Zelda not to climb on the bed? Do you think it would make them upset? Greyhounds are so sensitive I swear they're cats on the inside. Mike

  • @PJBchannel

    @PJBchannel

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey Mike, as long as you stay consistent with where they can and cannot go it should eventually work in keeping them off the bed. Just make sure you praise and give treats when they're lying where they should, such as their dog bed. If you dont want them sleeping in your bed forever and getting into that habit that is lol

    @@PJBchannel thanks! She's such a weirdo honestly lol. She's very reserved most of the time except for a few sudden explosions of affection, which for her means jumping on you and being very mouthy. If she happens to get on the bed during those episodes, and I try to get her off she starts crying like I'm skinning her. I think for now I'll try to be consistent with no bed, ok couch...

    What would you do if they are whining after a second of going outside do you just go in or wait till they stop whining?

  • @PJBchannel

    @PJBchannel

    2 жыл бұрын

    They will eventually start getting quiet even if they're about to wind up with the whining again. If they're quiet for even a few seconds, then come back in. Try to associate their quiet behavior with you returning. Otherwise they'll think if they cry long and hard enough you'll come back to them. They're creatures of habit, just need to train them to have the right behaviors that fits your life.

    Make sure you stick to a normal routine and give your dog a long lasting treat that can distract them for awhile and leave the tv or radio on. Exercise is very important too. The goal is to get them tired and distracted enough to not care that you are gone. They will eventually stop crying, Zelda was the same. She would cry for extended periods of time and finally tire herself out and she would be quiet and sometimes sleep.

    Getting a Furbo or dog camera is also a great way to check up on them from your phone so you dont have to keep your ear on your front door lol
