Everytime I see Paul, he just seems like a such a chill down to earth dude. It's nice to see this in our crazy industry. Gotta check out these new strings.

Paul just seems like one of those people that's so not full of himself that you could hang out with him all day and he's just a regular guy. Cool dude.

Awesome test, would love to see a guitar string comparison between different brands. I'm a huge supporter of Elixir Polyweb strings, best guitar strings in the world in my opinion! Super durability, they don't get dirty easily and they can handle me doing crazy bends and playing super aggressively. I tried Ernie Ball, D'Addario etc. and they gave out a lot earlier than Elixir strings.

Years ago.....32 years to be exact, i started playing guitar. I tried all that were available....there are other good brands.....but everytime i put on a set of Slinkys, and with the first strum.....that zing! That wonderful, bright and full zing! I now love the Cobalts, Paradigm, and of course, the classic Slinkys.

so these will let me tune my E string to Bb (which I'd never do) instead of A (which I'd never do) awesome

Amateurs. I play directly to the amp, with my fingers on cable tip.

Philip McKnight did a test like this a while ago with all kinds of strings. Most also went to A and NYXLs did A#. So I'd say in that regard those two are even.

I started out with Ernie Balls and they're fine for standard tunings and stuff like that. I admit I haven't tried these ones though. But since I play a whole step down and in lower tunings, I've always loved D'Addario(regulars or NYXL) for metal music because they just sound brighter. I want that cut for lower tunings, so I can't remember the last time I played anything other than D'Addario.

We wanna see a blind test between the Paradigm, Optiweb, Nanoweb, etc!

Watching that string go higher than E was worse than skydiving with no parachute

He has said in a few interviews he is losing his hearing. Guess you have seen him playing live with a huge set of red headphones, he is trying to protect the hearing he has left

I used elixir .10s on my strat for 8 straight months. at the end of 8th month, high e broke while bent. Elixirs are also very strong

Been an EB user since forever and my G always snaps first. Recently bought a Strandberg that has what I believe are either GHS strings or D’Addrio NYXLs, I’m now a convert.

I've had a set of 11's on my Les Paul for a year now. I've slackened them off to clean the neck and strings but there's no corrosion. I'm determined to see how long they will stay bright, it's become a challenge. Same set of strings this time next year? Very possible by the looks of it.

Captain what was your experience with the corrosion resistance of those strings? Please share with us. Are those comparable to Elixir Optiweb in terms of corrosion resistance?

Yes please do a corrosion test! I can only play one brand, that lasts me longer then a week, Elixir nanowebs, but they are hard to play, the tension makes it heavy to bend.

I use Ernie Ball strings, and I break them at 80% of my practices. I just bought the Paradigm (11s). Fingers crossed they hold up.

There would be a Sergio Garcia TaylorMade ad right before this video. Makes both perfect and imperfect sense.

i think i might give these new strings a shot. I've never played Ernie Ball since 1999. They rusted out on me in 2 weeks and they've been the only brand i've ever broken a string on.

Lee, did you see what type of Pick Paul was playing? to me it looks like his white Ibanez signature pick, but form what I have read he hadn't been using those in a while and was using Dunlop Tortex picks ....

How well would these hold up for alternate tunings ?

Can you mix 11s with 10 gauge strings with 11s being first string on a Strat ?

Paradigm’s literally stay smooth forever! Also, I have yet to bust a string while playing with these. Broken many with slinky

where did the strings break at anyway. the bridge? the nut? the machine head? the ball end? usually breaks at the bridge or the ball end becomes unraveled. I have had a `string` of ball-end breaks from an .008. I just re-wrapped the ball-end and was good to go again but that's an area of concern I suppose.

I use a tremolo (whammy bar) a lot and have broken many strings. Out of all of them Fender strings have been the worst breaking after a week. Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings have been more towards the middle of the scale breaking after a month. The best strings that I have ever tried are DR Dimebag strings. I have put those through hell doing bends, dive bombs, pulling sharp (my guitar is routed out so the Floyd Rose has a lot of travel), etc.... Despite that they tend to go around five or six months before breaking. DR makes great strings!

is there a string that can go on A high a and bend?

I don't really keep to a particular manufacture of strings, I'm always bouncing around between 9s and 10s, depending on how my practice is keeping up. My problem is finding a pack that hasn't corroded before I bought it, I always thought it was the little guitar shops near me that just didn't move enough strings to keep a fresh stock. Strings tend to go on really nice a clean but gum up in a few weeks, or I pull a set from my case to find they've corroded in the package. I'm thinking it's the weather where I live combined with the materials used to make the strings. I've changed strings each time I moved (Southern California, LA and OC areas) now that I think about it. However, Ernie Ball strings are always great performers, along with Elixer, and GHS.

invest in a dehumidifier i live in the southeast and the humidity would eat theough strings in 3 days until i bought one. now i can keep strings on for months even on the guitars i keep out of the case

I never twist my high e tuner that many times while stringing up. Last one snapped on about the 5th turn of the knob 🤷‍♂️

I use Ernie Ball Super Slinky strings on my guitar (Squier Affinity Series Stratocaster). Good strings!

Paul Gilbert is the official strings tester ! And amazing guitar player ( forgot mention he's a extremely good person) homework for egos guys.

And I can't help but be reminded of Billy Gibbons telling the story of how BB King asked him why he was struggling so hard with such heavy gauge strings? And then you hear Capt say he's going to 11's. Why the struggle?

Different gauges sound different. And Capt is using shorter scale guitars so the 11s on his Gibson feel closer to 10s on a Fender.

Fender pure nickel 9's work nicely for me, have never broken one since i switched from d'addario

PS: I have 1 more question - why guitars are tuned starting from bass E to the 5th frets and suddenly string B is tuned to the 4th fret of string G? It makes the schems of scales or licks slightly more complicated, cause we could play the same scheme on all the strings. Who knows?
