14 years since I commented below. This is one of the greatest songs by any Irish Songwriter ever. It's a bit sad it's not appreciated as much as I think it should be, but that's just me.

I think Paul was content enough just to be a quiet genius, but a genius he most certainly is. When he arrived back, still in his teens, from having toured around the deep south states with all kinds of open tuning and applied this to Irish folk songs, every guitar picker in Ireland sat up in a wtf moment. The rest is history. DADGAD, Drop D, Open G found a home in Irish music.

Thank God for Ireland. My country, Australia, is built on the sweat and blood of Irish immigrants and convicts. Despite the racist discrimination and being treated like animals by the English in this colonial outpost, the Irish have risen above it all and have prospered despite the discrimination. We will never forget the sacrifice and the hardship our families had to make and we pass this onto our children who will never forget Ireland. Pity the poor fools who underestimate the Irish.

The best concert I was ever at was Paul Brady in the Basement in Sydney. It was jammed with Irish immigrants; it was steaming hot, and people were actually crying as he sang some of his songs. I've seen him many times live, but that was an incredible night. I actually didn't have a ticket but the bouncer let me in after 20 minutes. Paradise is Here is probably my favourite song of all time, because it reminds us to see the good in front of us.

Great song, brilliantly sung! I was brought up with the idea of the Irish being thick, only able to dig holes and the obvious target for bad jokes. Travelling the world has taught me about love and respect. I love Planxty, Bothy Band, Dubliners, Seamus Ennis and all those folk groups/singers from the 60's/70's in particular. God what an intense performance by Paul Brady and Donal is fantastic also. While my mother's family is not from the same generation as either Paul or the men he is singing about, they have shared somewhat similar stories. The Guildford pub bombings especially was something they mentioned as having a direct effect on their day to day lives at certain moments. I guess it is something that is hard to fully understand if you have never experienced those times as an immigrant from Ireland. Doesn't mean that the UK isn't a fantastic country to live in ofc. I think that is something that some Irish people overlook sometimes when indulging in the romantic view of the past.
