Interesting show. We want to do this piece here in Chicago. I am curious about the libretto. I gather that these were Abraham's orchestrations, although he was known to improvise. The Johnny song needs to be adapted and fixed. I cannot believe that anyone in Cologne thought it was acceptable to leave the original text as written. I shudder to think that the productions in Germany are including the original as written. The show needs to be adapted- and it can be done- tastefully and true to the original without ruining the piece. A lot of great moments and great songs. Thanks for posting this. You should check out our Ball at the Savoy we did in 2014. We will release a recording of it soon.

The orchestration of this performance was new created by musicologists Henning Hagedorn and Matthias Grimminger. It was her first attempt to let the operettas of Paul Abraham sound in the sound of the 1930s again. Since then they have arranged the scores of all Abraham operettas in the sound of the 1930th but arranged for modern orchestras. They call it: “practical stage reconstruction”. There is a real Paul Abraham-Comeback in Germany and all new productions are played with these instrumentations. And the most of these productions revise the libretto for the modern era (whereby the Jonny song is mostly embedded as a charge against racism). I saw the performance in Chicago this evening, and it was wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed it! I'm still humming the tunes! "A paradise of sand and sea, that's where I long to be! a tropic breeze, the ocean air, and flowers everywhere!"

I just cannot understand why a composer capable of creating most appealing lyrical beauty should wish to bury it under "snack, crackle & pop". What an astonishingly beautiful melody is "Will Dir Die Welt Zu Füßen Legen", how insufferably light the work as a whole.

What a relief the "Will die Welt zu Füßen legen" finally has a lyrical, classical orchestration. What a pity the singers are acting, filming, faking. The dialogue, too, is just redundant, a nuisance interrupting the melody.

Richtig toll! Nur schade dass (vor allem) die männlichen Sänger nicht 'normal' sprechen zu können, sondern halt wie Opernsänger
