    Found an 18" Patton High Velocity Air Circulator with riveted blades, real chromed cage and stand (not bright-plated or cad), round motor, no oil inlets. It was a curbside notice, as it had very dry bearings and it didn't turn. I cleaned the cage of years of what appeared to be heavy deposits of either paint or spackle, lubricated the bearings with 90wt, repainted the blades and motor in Royal Blue and put it back into service. The chrome is perfect and the blue colored blades and motor is a great color.

    Excellent fan. I had this same fan except mine had an actual hub for the blade set. I got it from Home depot back in the mid to late 90s. It looks like the motor on that was separated at one point and re assembled incorrectly as the cut outs around the coils don't match up.

    I have a fan like this. It works great except the switch/knob/dial is missing and the stick to which the knob would afix to is broken down to a knob. I've been using pliers to turn it on etc but wondering if there is a way to repair the switch?

  • @JordanU

    @JordanU

    5 жыл бұрын

    I believe the switch is a standard size, a knob from a light dimmer or the like may fit.. If the switch itself is too damaged from being manipulated with pliers, they're relatively cheap and easy to replace..

    the date code is on the little silver tag (with the Mc Millin name on it) but as you said you cant read it all since the motor covers part of it up. very powerful fan! im not that into Patton fans. but they made some great stuff back in the day. the only big HV fan on my want list is a late 80's early 90's Lakewood HV-18.

I'll have to split the motor again and read the tag.. I really want to know what year this was from.. Perhaps I should assemble the motor in a fashion which doesn't cover the tag lol

    As long as you keep the bearings oiled and the motors clean of dust, they will run for quite some time. The prices are going up on these as they become more and more scarce. There's only one fan I know of that's still made which is of comparable build quality and performance, the TPI F-18-TE.

    I was doing further assessement on this 1989 Patton U21887 but got 3 sources for a replacement motor all are the 48 frame type. and all match the original capacitor rating which is 10 MFD 370 VAC. the most ill end up getting is the Emerson/US Motors 1690. i found one by Marathon Electric, and Century formally labled A.O. Smith. they all rate 2.7 amps which is high speed. and is a close match the amp rating on the later Patton U21887 with the McMillian electric. motor. the Samsung motor in it was over 4 amps. as i can't get it apart to ascess its bearings as i did bridge the thermal fuse in it to get it to run. these replacement motors there will be extra wires coming out the side of it and thats for the rotation. so when i do get the motor on it will stick out the back more. its the correct 1/2 inch shaft diameter. and 3 speeds, for covering the wires for this motor what should i use electrical tape, heat shrink, whats best. i want to fix this fan as its vintage not letting it go to a landfill as its a quality product than. than whats made today.

  • @JordanU

Last time I all the fan it caught on fire nearly burnt the house down with me asleep I think God my parents came in and we threw the fan outside... what are the oil ports for? I absolutely love this fan it is extremely forceful are on high if you didn't put the feed on there it would push back it's so powerful.

    Lack of oil and dust accumulation in the motor are the primary sources of failure in these fans. If you took care of both of those issues, you may have bought quite a bit more time with it.

    i got a Patton U2-1887 last week from a local supermarket as it closed down its a 1986 model with a Samsung motor but its shot the bearings are worn the fan is good so i need to replace the motor on it the motor says Patton Electric Co New Haven Indiana on it. i have to see if the mount if i can put on a 48 frame motor on it chances are it will be a Emerson/US Motors. when i plugged it in turned it on got a horrible racket. as this fan was used heavilly. the one you got has a McMillian Electric Co motor so its a later model fan possible from the 1990s.

  • @derekobidowski5784

    @derekobidowski5784

    6 жыл бұрын

    i don't think they have motor bearings for that motor its a 1/2 in shaft diameter. as the bolt pattern on the rear grille it can accept a 48 frame motor as most likely it be US Motors ill replace it with which is 3 speed and 1625 RPM which is available at my local supply house Johnstone supply. i remembered too i had to bridge the thermal fuse in it for it to run. as the run capacitor was replaced already they put in a Packard 10MFD 370 VAC metal oval run cap as it had a dry type cap that was bad a 10 MFD 250 VAC. when you replace a motor run capacitor you can go up in voltage but not down so a 10 MFD 440 VAC cap will work. but not down in voltage. these are Permanent Split Capacitor PSC motors these fans use. when i get a new motor i have to match the amps plus i have to get a run capacitor required for that motor im replacing the one i looked at is a US Motors, 48 frame, 3 speed, 1625 RPM and its reversable as it will have the extra wires with connectors on it you interchange them to reverse the rotation of the motor. as the blade is still original rest of the fan is in great shape when i do get a motor ill have to carefully peel off the patton label on that motor and put it on the new motor. the other motor i looked at i think its Century, or Marathon. im going to stick with US motors formally Emerson Electric but still a division of Emerson electric. but owned by Nidec Motor Corporation. when you buy a replacement motor it will come with a instruction booklet with all warnings and installations wiring etc. as FASCO the 3.3 in motors they come with a instruction booklet for their motors and blowers. as FASCO don't recommend use of triac or solid state speed controls for their motors or blowers. here where im at there is no closest Grainger branch. so its the local HVAC wholesale center which is Johnstone supply. McMillian Electric still makes motors mainly for ventamatic ltd. for their attic fans and the Maxx Air 24 in drum fan. the attic fans are shaded pole full size box fan motors. the drum fan is a PSC type. as Vornado they used McMillian electric shaded pole motors in their fans and retired some as the US assembled ones they use an imported motor now i believe Pan Globe. as i replaced one that had a blown thermal fuse with a US Motors 9662 PSC 3.3 in as i had to drill out the studs on the rear end plate for larger ones and it fits. and used a triac variable speed switch for it since its a single speed motor. as this motor also has the rotation wires on the side too. as these US Motors the 3.3 in are made in China the 42-48 frame motors are assembled in Mexico as some motors are built in St Louis Missouri, or Princeton Indiana. for some of US motors select RESCUE motors. as smaller fans i normally replace motors with the FASCO brand for the 3.3 inch motors.

  • @derekobidowski5784

    i looked at this Samsung motor further its beyond repair the shaft where the bearing on the fan side is all scored plus i had to bridge the thermal fuse in the motor so i have to replace the motor in this if i can find a cheaper deal on one online for a suitable motor the way the grille mounts are im going to have to use a 48 frame motor a US Motors 1690. 3 speed 1625 RPM motor for this when i replace the motor i have to get a run capacitor for this. as this fan was heavilly used at a supermarket when it closed two weeks ago. its an original 1980s vintage Patton U2 1887. a new motor from my local HVAC will be over $100.00 is i don't want to spend but if i can find it cheaper on Ebay.

  • @derekobidowski5784

    i peeled the Patton label off this dead Samsung motor there is a label underneath it. it said Made in R.O. Korea on the motor. as it tells me Patton used these motors on these fans prior to the McMillian electric motors. as im looking for a McMillian electric motor for this and could not find one as McMillian electric is still a US made motor made in Woodville WI. this US Motors i found is close in amp draw to the Mcmillian electric motor. as its assembled in Mexico where US Motors formally labled Emerson Electric co. its owned by Nidec Motor Corporation. its the US Motors 1690 is all i can find for this fan. i did peel off the label with the important date code so i can affix it to the new motor. as it turns out i can reuse my existing capacitor which is a 10 MFD 370 VAC i tested it and it checked out good. the new motor requires a 10 MFD 370 VAC run cap so im in luck i can take it off the dead samsung motor. when this fan gets done the motor will potrude more from the back. its the way it will mount to the rear grille.

    Yes, I also agree that it's worth getting it repaired. Even if you have to take off about 3 inches of the wire to replace the plug - do it - just make sure to use a heavy duty plug with the ground. Or take it somewhere to have it fixed. You may pay about 12.00 or so for a repair, but you will never touch another fan like this today and this will last you much longer than the junk you buy today. They may even be able to replace the entire cord with a molded plug. I have 5 of these blue Patton fans just like this that I got at flea markets. They have outlasted 3 newer fans that I bought recently and I will not part with these at all. Just remember though, if you fix it, oil it once a season with a high quality motor oil. They claim you do not need to oil these fans, not true at all!
