STORY TIME: back in 1959 Patsy was in northern VA which is where most of my mother's side of the family is from. She was at a restaurant when she spotted my great grandad sitting alone. She decided to join him and they became very flirtatious with each other. The next thing you know, my great grandmother who was his then girlfriend (now wife of 56 years) came back from the restroom. Upset at what she saw, she hit THE Patsy Cline in the head with her boot! To this day we give my great grandma a hard time and I always sing "Walkin after Midnight" or "Crazy" just to see her face turn red!!

She hit the high B flat! Never heard her sing in that range. I find it hard to believe that this was done in 1960. She's wearing the cowgirl outfit (her mother made these for her) which would place this performance somewhere in the '50s. She looks very young here, as well. Also, it's filmed. I'm pretty sure that they were using videotape by 1960.

Patsy was lovely and young in this video. She was very intelligent, and I think grew up very quickly. In such a short lifetime, she wrote so many memorable songs If she hadn't died so tragically, in the plane crash, she would still be starring at the Grand Ole Oprey, along with her friend Loretta Lynn. God bless her family!

@kristien - She also had a very bluesy touch, in her voice and interpretations. Walkin' After Midnight could easily have been a hit for some R&B singers, i think. Black folks were playing old time, bluegrass - everything people wanted to dance to, in Virginia and the Piedmont. And probably WVA as well. I bet Patsy listened to everything she could, every type of music - even show tunes. And she pulled all those different influen es together and made them her own.

Her final note in this song blows you out of the water so obviously her range is far greater than she's been dubbed (as a contralto). In either case she was a MEGA TALENT and there is no one today who can touch her. She was truly blessed with an incredible talent and thank God she shared it with us.

I'm 27, how old are you? My mother introduced me to Patsy Cline because she's a singer and she used to sing her songs. However, all the music I listen to from the 1920's to 1950's I discovered myself. It started with Frank Sinatra and one thing led to another :)

This is a Hank williams number, he wrote it in 1944 and the record was a number 1 hit in America at 1947. Patsy was a fan of Hank and did many covers of Hank "yodeling" songs!!!!

It's a hit for Hank, but you got the facts dead wrong, hoss. This song is from the 1910s to the 1920s in minstrel shows, and it was released by Hank in the early 1950s along with Moanin' the Blues as the B-side.

SSTLibertas Both Patsy and Hank (who sing it superbly) owe a debt to Emmett Miller's versions...who Emmett owes a debt to for his blue yodel, I don't know---

Floored by how incredibly good she sings. She makes it seems effortless, yet to the ear she slices and dices with stunningly expert vocal precision all the while. Too many superlative to list.

Wow. Whenever I listen to Patsy Cline's warm, rich voice (even when she yodels!) I wonder what has happened to the music industry - it seems that now singers sing through their noses much of the time and with flat-sounding vowels that reduce their natural voices to thin, metallic sounds with little warmth, and indistinguishable from each other. Young singers could learn a lot from singers like Patsy and Ronnie Gilbert!
