Patrisse Cullors and Lowkey | Studio B: Unscripted

In this episode of Studio B: Unscripted, US artist and activist Patrisse Cullors meets British Iraqi rapper and campaigner Lowkey, to talk race, politics, activism and protest.
In 2013, Cullors co-founded the Black Lives Matter activist movement which campaigns against violence and systemic racism. She helped to propagate the cause globally and in 2016 she published her book When They Call You a Terrorist - A Black Lives Matter Memoir - which became a New York Times bestseller.
Lowkey rose to fame in London's underground hip-hop scene, releasing several mixtapes which chronicled the harsh realities of life for many working-class people in the UK. His work also dissects the synergies between the "War on Terror", global imperialism and racism. He is an avid activist as a patron of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the Stop the War coalition.
In this discussion, Cullors and Lowkey share their experiences of activism and protest, dissecting the relations between power and politics in constructing definitions and narratives about those challenging the status quo.
The views expressed in this programme are the guests' own and do not necessarily reflect Al Jazeera's editorial stance.
Studio B, Unscripted is a free-flow conversation between two guests and a small audience, with no mediation, no MC, no TV presenter - focusing on what brings us all together and how we can tackle and discuss some of the big issues of our time.

It's just christianity but for the arabs (and it was a very sucessfull unifying ideology look what they did, went from being fringe irelevences to the Sassanids and the Romans to being the dominant power. Probably one of the most sucessfull ideologies ever xD). Its as fallible and decieving as any human centric monotheist religion is. Being sectioned under the mental health act is undoubtedly traumatising and often retraumatising for people and their families. It is an ethical and legal issue that needs continues examination. It is also worth noting that young males of black and ethnic minority groups are more likely to be sectioned. However unfortunately sometimes its a step that needs to be taken to safe guard peoples lives. The fact that Lowkey didn't believe the police had his bothers best interests at heart shows the damage that has been done by years of institutional discrimination which to often leads to the most tragic of consequences

Victim mentality though.. when black folks, and I'm one btw, advocate this approach, they admit powerlessness. Get into Amos Wilson and Thomas Sowell and accept your own will to change and demand change: yes black lives matter, this program has to operate in every area not just reactionary protest to police brutality. This whole begging and wishing your known enemies, the system and the structure, to change or accommodate you is a pure waste of energy, with no meaningful results.

Just because a person shares a similar color does not mean that they share a culture. Africa is not one big country. If you ask somebody they're going to tell you they are Nigerian, Congolese, South African etc. they're not going to come out and say I'm African. People from Europe don't do that either. They say they're from Germany, France, Italy etc.

It seems BLM is becoming bigger than it originally intended (as far as I understood)... and I'm concerned it's going to become less practically productive... similar to trying to pass a law to solve x problem, then tagging on several other stipulations that are not related, and then the law doesn't get passed... whereas if it just stuck to the one goal, it could be passed and they could work on the other things separately. it hasn't even achieved the original goal yet... has it? I submit it's very possible i misunderstood the original goal. I thought it was supposed to be about addressing systematic (judicial, legislative, and executive) racism against black Americans... I'm not speaking for or against the Palestinian issues, just that seems to be a separate issue, and I'm not sure it was wise to incorporate it... practically.

@Crow29Darkness why don't they get them to help better causes than making crazy profits for companies that don't pay taxes. Gay rights might be legal in all states but that doesn't mean it works and people don't protest about it. Why should every country adhere to what America thinks is right? And are they meant to be an example? They should sort there own backyard first with the crazy amount of mass shootings and racism. Every country has its own rules and who are we to interfere with that, Muslim countries aren't the only ones against LGBT look at countries people go to as holiday destinations such as Jamaica and there treatment. Every TV station will or may have a slight biased approach to what they believe in its just normal.
