The scene where Ryan Gosling accidently slits his wrist on the door window in the very beginning had me in tears the first time I saw this film. Fucking comedy gold.

100% agree. I'm still disappointed that this wasn't a big enough success to lead to some sequels. In a better world this would have been a 'Knives Out' style hit and become the Lethal Weapon series of a new generation.

Canadian kids have known of Gosling's comedy skills since the 2000s. He was the "comic relief goofball" character on a show called Breaker High. In a way, he's basically reprising that character in Nice Guys.

Really makes me wish Shane Black could make a comeback, especially after how The Predator (2018) turned out .
@breedlove94

I have mixed feelings about that. Like The Predator definitely got screwed over in the edit during the Fox sale, but also Black let one of his friends who was a registered sex offender on set without telling the other cast and crew, including the parents of the child actors. I feel that's a pretty decent reason to put someone in movie jail for a couple of years.

@@breedlove94 My man the movie's a shit-show, It failed on each and EVERY level. From the story, characters, "humor", action, literally everything. I couldn't believe wtf i was watching. He made the lady strip down for no reason? Predator firing an AR-15 in a Rambo style? The tired BS trope of the genius kid, just cause he's got a mental issue. It was beyond bland, shots and angles are on a first time directors TV show level, the soundtrack... What soundtrack? Predators weren't intimidating nor scary/mysterious, i can't remember a single action sequence that stood out, the few lines that were supposed to be bad ass made me laugh for the first time in the film, an hour in, it was cringe. And he wanted to have several predators cracking jokes and buzzing about in a tank, mid day?? If he wanted to make a comedy, he made one, and it's bad. Biggest faux pa I've ever seen from a writer/director as good as he is.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a KZread video whose content I agree with so much. It is like Patrick read my mind. I love introducing this film to people who’ve never seen it.
I couldn't believe this film was so underrated,it was funny, suspenseful, and had some heavy emotional development. I have watched it a dozen times at least. The Nice Guys and The Man From Uncle are criminally underappreciated. Both films had incredible directors, perfectly cast actors , and a balance of action/comedy/drama perfectly paced. I really would love to see both of these movies get a sequel or series.
Possibly my favorite movie, and definitely the one I'm always most excited to rewatch. Every time I show it to friends, it becomes one of their favorites as well. While I get why its theater run didn't go well, I can't believe it's not a bigger cult classic than it is.
What a wonderful Christmas eve gift! I actually watched "The Nice Guys" for the first time a few months ago, and while I liked it, I didn't fully understand the context. I now appreciate it even more than I did. It was brilliant, and stuff. I mean, it was brilliant.

"You had me at wine; I'll take a bottle's worth."
The scene where Ryan Gosling breaks the window and ends up in an ambulance had me in hysterics. Great comparison with DiCaprio, too! I love it when an actor surprises us with their hidden comedic talents: not everyone can do it.
"I had to question the mermaids" is one of the greatest lines ever spoken in cinema.
Kiss kiss bang bang and the nice guys are two of my favourite movies, Shane Black's scripts are so much fun
The Nice Guys is a great movie. I saw it in the theater, now it's definitely time for a rewatch. And yes, they should make a sequel. My opinion on it is a little different, though. Where you see it as incredibly sad, I see it as mean. Like it depicts a mean world that chews up innocent people without mercy. Somehow Healy and March have managed to survive by sacrificing any innocence or idealism they once had, but even that is only enough to keep them sort of half-alive. By banding together they rediscover the lost parts of themselves, even though their quest is an almost total failure. The movie is about how you can't give in to the world no matter how mean and lousy it really is. Fighting to make things better (or at least to be the best version of yourself) is the only way to be truly alive, and people like Holly deserve no less than your best.

Similar to The Last Boy Scout. Another overlooked classic.
11:03 Yeah, there’s something about Russel Crowe that makes him believable as somebody who’d beat people up with little provocation… Additionally: I really love that the depressing ending of this movie, where the bad guy gets away, is ultimately undone by time. Because the Detroit automotive industry is gonna go up in smoke in like…barely any time at all. So the bad guys’ll lose after all, just not through the way anybody expected.

Shane Black is criminally underappreciated.
Ryan Gosling's performance in this is one of my favorites of all time.
One of the most quotable lines in any Shane Black movie is just “what the fuck is this, Chet?”
The Nice Guys is one of my favorites, and I'm so glad it gets the attention it deserves on KZread. If it weren't for recommendations from KZread, I wouldn't have discovered this absolute gem of a film. My whole family loved it!
After seeing this, and his turn in snl, I quickly learned how funny gosling really is
I saw The Nice Guys in theaters alone because no one else wanted to see it with me and loved it so much I bought it on DVD as soon as it released on that so I could show it to absolutely everyone I could.
Man, i watched this movie TODAY, as a Christmas session, laughed my ass off. One of the most rewatchable movies ever.
Personally, I found the twist in Iron Man 3 with the Mandarin to be disappointing NOT because it was a mere subverted expectation, but because the "real" villain turned out to be yet another lame nobody in a business suit, just like in the first two Iron Man films. Plus, Sir Ben Kingsley played the fake Mandarin so well that it left me wishing he had just been the real villain. Thankfully, Marvel did a great job redeeming him in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Other than that, I wholly agree with your sentiment about subverted expectations in general. You know what? I love Nice Guys. And I love The Last Jedi. You don't agree? Whatever. You don't have to watch them. Just don't go crying on the internet about your life being ruined because the movie wasn't tailored for you.
@Inkmonkeywoodis
2 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest problem was that Black had planned for the "Real Mandarin" to be revealed to be an Asian Woman who was manipulating everything expertly, but Ike Perlmutter wouldn't let him because he thought a main villain who is both a minority and a woman wouldn't sell toys, so the final twist was changed into a boring, forgettable white guy who also didn't sell many toys.
@TheLukeMonster

I'd heard that in the original script the real villain turned out to be the character played by Rebecca Hall with Guy Pearce ALSO being a red herring. That would've been much better than the story we got. (Also, based on your comment, it would make sense if this character was both more prominently featured in the film and also an Asian woman thus leading to Ike Perlmutter ruining everything.)
I remember having a conversation with my workmates (who are movie buffs) when the Barbie buzz started about how they were surprised to see Gosling in this kind of role. I was like "What do you mean? He was great in The Nice Guys, i think its perfect casting" and they were like "Whats The Nice Guys?" And i was legitimately GAGGED. Needless to say, i told them they should see it as soon as humanly possible. One of the best comedies of the last decade.
If you've ever seen the TV show "Breaker High" you can see some of the DNA of Gosling's performance there, and that's back when he was a teenager.
