Patriarchy, racism, and colonialism caused the climate crisis | Jamie Margolin | TEDxYouth@Columbia

We usually think of climate change as a standalone issue that started with the Industrial Revolution. But, in fact, to stop the climate crisis, we first have to dismantle the systems of oppression that caused it. Jamie Margolin is an activist, student, author, and co-founder of the youth climate justice movement Zero Hour, which mobilizes young people all over the world for emergency climate action. Her activism is rooted in her love of both the American Pacific Northwest, where she grew up, and the wilderness of her mother's home country, Colombia, both of which are deteriorating due to human causes. Her identity as a queer, Jewish, Latina motivates her to fight for the marginalized and get to the root of the problems that hold down our world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Here's a history lesson, colonialism isn't a white concept, a European concept. It happened everywhere. Conquest has been a thing since the earliest civilizations. Egypt did it, the ottoman empire did it, Persia did it, Rome, Aztecs, you name it. The reason why European countries began to dominate after the Renaissance period was because of 3 simple reasons, one they had horses, two they built better ships, and three they didn't have a climate that supported the spread of many deadly diseases with the exception of the bubonic plauge that ravaged civilizations. Ie malaria that ravaged Africa and South America until the 20th century. It also helped that China was unified under one emperor who conveniently decided that naval expansion was not a valuable use of their time and so they focused on agriculture and and their main concerns were enemies to the north and west like the Mongols and India.
