Hi everybody! My name is Cecilia Barros and I am a provisional psychologist under AHPRA (Australian Health Practicioner Regulation Agency). I made this video in hopes that it will explain in a clear way the different pathways to becoming a psychologist in Australia. Thanks for watching!

I really appreciated this video! Currently in my second year of undergrad (studying in Australia) and want to understand all my options :) I was wondering you you have to complete honours to become a clinical psychologist? For some reason the grad dip option isn't really talked about at my uni despite offering it and somewhere I heard that to get into masters you have to complete honours?
@ceciliabarros7447
2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can complete grad dip, but the grades to enter clinical psychology change every year
Very informative video! Cecilia, I am just wondering is there any way of becoming a psychologist if you dont do honours. A pathway i am thinking is either 1.Bachelor of Counselling then work as a counsellor for 2 years then enter Master Program of Psychology (Clinical) OR 2. Bachelor of Psych then Grad diploma in counselling, work for 2 years then get into Master .Your advice on this matter is greatly appreciated. Thank you
Thank you for this informative video! You explained it perfectly :) About the undergrad - honours - masters and the two years working while being supervised - pathway (wow, this is an incredibly long word”). Are you being paid while working these two years after taking the masters?
@ceciliabarros7447

Yes! It's paid work!

I'm about to take the plunge into doing my post grad too! So excited as it's something I've always wanted to do. Hopefully I'll finish in time to do the 4+2 internship 🙂 Also do you know if you have to always pay for supervision in the internship if your employed by an organisation?
@ceciliabarros7447

Hey! Yes the 4+2 is so good! Enjoy your post grad!!! So, some workplaces provide supervision and you do not need to pay, others they provide supervision but you need to pay, and some do not provide supervision at all and you need an external supervisor. The cost for supervisors can vary from 130$ to 250$, so it does depend on the supervisor.

@@ceciliabarros7447 hi I can I ask... If they charge a fee is that per hour? Or a "one of fee"? Thanks
Hello. Currently I'm studying BSc psychology in UK university online. I just want to change this to Australian degree. Do you have any idea how should I do that?
Great video Cecilia! Did you touch on the Dpsych as there are still a few courses out there 😁

Cecilia Barros Oh I’m so looking forward to this as I’m interested in going into the course. Thanks Cecilia, you explained everything so well in your video.
Great video! Does anyone know where I can find her specific video on a research PhD without becoming a registered psychologist?
@ceciliabarros7447

Hey! So for q PHD pathways you do undergrad, honors, and then a PHD. You don't have to do anything regarding registration
How does it work for Filipinos (foreigners)? I'm a Graduate student crurently majoring in Clinical Psychology in Philippines. I am already on my last year of graduate school. I have a licensed in Psychometry as well. What would be the best pathway I take as a foreigner who will soon have a graduate diploma in Clinical psychology and hopefully have a license as a General Psychologist here in the philippines?
Is it possible to study masters and PhD combined if I studied my undergraduate degree outside Australia? Thank you so much for your content and response to my question!

Hi! That is such a good question. In order to be able to do further study and get your undergraduate recognized, you need to do courses that have been accredited by APAC. I will be making a video on it later as well. Another factor which may affect your transition is the country you have your undergraduate on; so this becomes a very person to person case. From what I have seen, if you have your undergraduate from a country that is not in the commonwealth, it does make the process a little bit harder, and you may have to do an honours or post graduate diploma (both include a thesis) which are APAC accredited courses. Again, it is very person to person, so it does depend on AHPRA, and how they view the qualifications you have. Here is the AHPRA costumer service number, and they can give you some information: 1300 419 495. I will also be making a video on what AHPRA/ APAC/ APS/ AAPI/ PSYCHOLOGY BOARD are as well because it can get confusing too.

Do psychology students in masters get psw and pr easily?
thank you for information .... i have a question too... could i with general psychologist phd, work in clinic and have clinical registered from AHPRA?!
@ceciliabarros7447

No, you can only become a clinical psychologist if you do the clinical psychology degree as mentioned in the video. You would be a registered psychologist with a PHD
Hey thanks for video very informative!! Question I have bachelor degree in Psychology from the United States, do you think the APS will accept my degree? I’m trying to do the graduate diploma program to qualify for fourth year so I can get be able get qualify for 4+2 yrs route

Hi! Thanks for watching my video! I would recomend you calling AHPRA (they have an international number line) and they can guide you. I think that because you are in the USA (there are many US students) it would not be problem. But you should check with them first!

I am taoking about the pathways to become a psychologist in Australia in this video. I don't know about the international pathways, and they are often not valid in Australia.

How to became clinical psychologist?
Hello,I'm an 18 y/o girl from India and I'm currently pursuing BSW (bachelor of social work) at the best college in india for the course, I'm also taking up other psychology related courses on coursera. I wanna pursue a career in neuropsychology . I wanna do my masters in neuropsychology. Is it possible for me to apply to colleges for my masters in neuropsychology with a undergraduate degree in BSW in Australia?

Hi! I have a video about that (it is transferring the brazilian degree but the process is quite similar). However, the process is often very difficult. The best option for you would be to contact the APS and see if they would allow you to transfer your degree from India to an equivalent Australian degree so you could go into a Masters of Neueopsychology. I hope that helps! The process changes for every person and varies from country to country so it is not one easy pathway to do this. Good luck!

This is so helpful, informative and clear. Thank you very much! 🤍 I am still lost atm tho. I already had my 4-years BS Psych course in Philippines, I am planning to take Diploma in Mental Health and work for few years before taking masters in psych.. I can do that right? :(( Diploma in Mental Health is still aligned in this path? I want to be a psychologist :((

Hi! You need a 3 year bachelors, a 1 year honours (thesis component) and then extra studying (depending on the pathway). If you are international, they may require extra studying due to transferring the degrees and things. But a diploma of mental health will not help in becoming a psychologist.
