Loved how you mentioned that our sense of self becomes that of the character. I remember going into the game thinking to myself "I refuse to harvest organs of those in the town, I will not spill blood" and by about day 4-5 I broken that and my moral compass went out the window and from then on i was more than happy to pick any lonely victims just so i can buy some fish to keep going for an extra hour or two.

It might be a little rough around the edges but I'm looking to improve! Hope to see some valuable responses soon that I can use to improve future videos. I'm new to this whole recording my own voice thing (and a little nervous) so let me know even about minor stuff that I can improve that I might not be aware of! I think you should go down the route of separate channels. I only found your analysis videos incidentally because I was subscribed for soundtracks. I don't run any channels myself, but I noticed that most online creators who get recommended have separate channels for livestreams and other misc content and use their main channels for essays and big projects. Since every other media analysis channel does it, it must be channel suicide not to do so, right?

I really love and relate to the Haruspex, because his struggle as a mixed - race man aligns a lot with mine, so I was a bit apprehensive going into this video. It's an amazing video, however, and I really enjoyed it! I'm about to watch your other one later today.

I'm so glad someone else sees and relates to how Artemy is mixed. The alienation from both the eurocentric townsfolk and the indigenous Khantanghe resonates so hard when you've personally experienced it. It is its own pervasive and constant trauma in a way, constantly looming over how he never truly feels aligned with either side, alienated by his own home. As much as we don't know much about Isidor, he seems to have a more open viewpoint to mordern ideas, being friends with Simon Cain while still maintaining his role with the Kin. I personally believe that Artemy growing up might have been mostly raised with Khatanghe ideas of collectivism and that his father sent him off to explore the world to have him experience individuality in a way that the town could never provide, which to me screams such a personal love and hope for his son. He wanted his son not only to learn the medicine that a Capital education could provide, but also have Artemy become his own man. I think its beautiful, the way the two aspects of him pull at him every which way and how he learned to manage and live through it. He is still torn between his collectivist duty but does it in his own way on his own terms. Edit: for context, im heavily mixed and due to family losses, never got to experience what that means for me culturally. I grew up with a white-hispanic parent who was not equipt to deal with the kids being part black or asian, or how being hispanic colours those racial identities. I mourn the loss of it constantly, but with a white family, no one respects or even acknowledges it beyond comments of very physical features like face or body composition. It sort of upsets me how depsite the Kin being very non-european, his appearance sort of gets lost in fanart of Artemy, it erases the significance of that being half Kin because I feel that within my own art.

Good analysis! If you view Artemy as The Child of both the town and the kin, he follows a sort of exploratory hero archetype for both societies. Each in their own way represent Father Authority, with the strict delegation of power to the ruling families in-town and the mandatory collectivized oneness of the steppe. Each also serves as Mother Chaos when contrasted to the other : a person is an individual in town, without the familial support structure of the steppe, surrounded by buildings around the corner of which could be knife wielding robbers. The tools of society fall away in the Steppe, where the grasses buzz strange tunes, monsters still roam, and the 'civilized' man is utterly alone and beyond the saving power of violent men willing to enforce standards. Artemy has to traverse between the two in order to bring back to society / "The Father" what each needs from the 'chaos' / "The Mother" of the other. This even shows up in the barter economy system. Ultimately he descends into the bowels of the earth, geographically below the false Heart of both the town and the steppe, and returns with secret knowledge of the true Heart of each, and stands in authority in the eyes of the people of each. No longer the Child, metaphorically, but an aspect of the new Father... But he can't stand with a foot in each anymore, since Authority means choosing. Pathologic 2 is said to be the game where you're not a hero, but a guy in a terrible set of circumstances...but it might be the most solid example of the ancient Oppressive Father Society / Neglectful Mother Chaos / Hero Child Savior hero's journey I've ever played.

This is fantastic. Your channel and your comments have really helped to fuel my mild Pathologic addiction, and as far as I'm concerned you've now proven yourself as a video essayist as well. I'd say that I can't wait for the next instalment, but I have a feeling your blog will be keeping me busy -- great work all round!

Not sure exactly who's after Artemy, but I was looking at doing an analysis of at least a few of Artemy's bound after this one. Definitely Changeling and Bachelor will come in time though!

Hey this is great work, shows that you're thinking about the story and the implications of the narrative to the player in real life. I especially like your phrase "ruthless altruist". I would suggest, that you look up some voice acting/ voice over tips, just to make yourself a little more expressive. I had to do some voice over projects in college and I wish I had looked up some kind of actual guidance so that I don't cringe at the sound of my own voice.
