Slayer does have one thing that it's the undisputed master of in Kingmaker... Shield Bashing! Slayer Talents allow you to bypass the Dex Requirement on the Two-Weapon Fighting Feats while also giving you access to a *lot* of Combat Feats to play with, this means that they can reliably go for Dreadful Carnage (4 Feats: Power Attack, Weapon Focus, Dazzling Display, Dreadful Carnage), Cornugon Smash, Greater Two-Weapon Fighting (3 Feats: Two-Weapon Fighting, Improved Two-Weapon Fighting, Greater Two Weapon Fighting), and Bashing Finish (3 Feats: Shield Bash, Shield Mastery, Bashing Finish) all on the same character! You can achieve all of that by level 12 Slayer (If you're not going Deliverer) and then shove the remaining 8 levels into Vivisectionist for a pile more Sneak Attack or w/e else floats your boat.

Player's Handbook from 1980 (first print 1978), page 25: Rangers get their first druid spell at level 8 and their first mage spell at level 9. That's 40 years ago.

Rangers in Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st edition could use magic user and druid spells. They also got d8 hp vs d 10 and got more attacks slower then fighters and paladin. So yes the ranger could cast spells from the start what is known as Dungeons and Dragons.

The Slayer is the absolute master of damage. They get fighter BAB progression with extra accuracy from studied target, and a decent sneak attack progression. The bonus Slayer talents also include ranger combat styles, which means you don't need any dexterity to take the two weapon fighting feats Max out strength, and take all of the two weapon style feats, and you will melt faces. It gives you the best parts of ranger and rogue, it's so good it's almost unfair. You're looking at hundreds of damage per round even before level ten. In the late game, you could easily do 500 or more damage on a full attack action with a crit or two added into the mix. This is a good video for the basics, but I don't think you picked up on how powerful the weapon style feats make the class, it gives you tons of flexibility on your attribute scores. I also think you underestimate the slayers accuracy. The fighter level base attack bonus combined with studied Target bonuses make Slayer one of the most accurate classes in the game. Rogues will have more sneak attack dice, but by the late game Slayers will have +10 (at least) on their attack rolls relative to a rogue, which translates to more hits and more reliable damage.

There's 2 things I wonder about: 1) Can it tank effectively when soloing? I'm thinking of using heavy armor but that offsets the bonus. 2) Does cleave reapply the study? 3) Would you recommend Deliverer over Slayer? If im not mistaken you only miss out on 1 bonus feat but you get a free diehard and extra dmg

@@charleskulvet4911 1) You could probably make a Slayer into a tank with some multiclassing. But all of the Slayer class features point towards damage, you're not getting any defensive abilities from slayer, you would have to get those from other classes and feats. 2) If your cleave is a sneak attack it will automatically apply study Target to anything hit, you don't need to reapply studied target. But if you're playing solo you will probably have to manually apply studied target to your enemies since you won't have allies to help you flank enemies. 3) I don't remember the deliverer, but I tend to prefer the base Slayer, since all of the archetypes have drawbacks. Doesn't the deliverer lose effectiveness against non-humanoid targets?

Thanks for all your explanations. I think you got some points wrong tough. The deliverer can't cast spells but got another kind of a sneak attack against studdied target with an alignment two step away from the slayer. For all slayer, you can use the fencing/slashing grâce + weapon finesse and finessable weapon for dex damage and hit. Plus you can use several ranger combat style whereas the ranger only got one I think.

With regards to Rogue feats, in addition to Accomplished Sneak Attack, Crippling Strike at level 10 is working really well for my Slayer.

Slayer can get point blank master, cornugon smash, cleaving finish and great cleave at level 6 without all the prerequisite skills. So that is pretty nice.

Thanks for a great explanation! One thing about rangers: they did get spells in AD&D when they were first introduced. Arcane spells, but only after reaching 10th level or so

I love the Deliverer Slayer. Quite strong when fully taking advantage of its purpose. Playing a Tiefling Deliverer Slayer on my new run. Probably one of the top damage dealers in the game. Not part of the DLC btw, this is a free class! And subbed, you appear to be a smart and kind guy, excellent qualities. Just one big correction, you can actually use finesse weapons. I'm using a Rapier in 1 hand and a dagger in the other. Advanced dual finesse weapons using my Dex. Technically I don't need strength unless I really want a boost to bag space lol. Anyway, this is very important because now all you need to put attributes in terms of combat is Dex and Con.

I rather like building these unfocused characters for games like this, where you have one hero and NPCs...Slayers would also be great for a one class party as well since you have healing with the deliverer then you can spec out the rest to be very different. I do agree single classes are best for game where I create a full party or table top gaming, but for my first run I went with a flamedancer who is great at enchanting magic, to thin out enemies, as well has to weapon fighting to help mop up and do some DPS when my tanks are engaged, but going with these "master of none" types just a little more depth to the main character. I think if you build them right they can be better than a muli-classed character, yet still offer a little more versatility, than a more focused class.

Is it possible to make any decent slayer/Inquisitor multiclass?

  • @Unhazed

Unless I missed something, you didn't really touch on the studied target full description. I'm referring to "The DC of the slayers class abilities against that opponent is increased by 1". I don't now what constitutes 'class abilities' but I assume everything taken with feats will take advantage of this. Such as trip, dazzling display, dirty trick and so on. Thoughts on this?

Great video... One comment. In AD&D (1978), Ranger could use up to 3rd level druid and 2nd level magic user spells.

I think Rangers are supposed to be more Druid-lite with their spells. I wouldn't pass them up as you can get buffs like Aspect of the Falcon, Hurricane Bow and Sense Vitals.

I have a strange issue with my slayer. Created a new character and choose combat style > two weapon < two weapon fighting on level 2. on lv 4 I cannot select the next combat style feat. This also happens when I choose sword&shield combat style or spec as a deliverer (in this case the problems appears later because the deliverer gets not bonus feat on lv 2). Hope someone can give me a tip how to fix this issue.

I'm thinking about multiclassing a deliverer with an inquisitor thinking it's cool to RP. Is is viable tho? Nice video by the way, very insightful.

  • @rangertony

I generally dont multiclass so I am not going to say if this will be viable or not. My advice is give it a try. You loose nothing from trying out new builds and what you gain is at least the knowledge of whether the build is viable or not, and if it is viable you also have fun while doing it

Shame Kingmaker does not have the Seething Hatred feat. In PnP Pathfinder, it lets you pick a type of enemy similar to a Ranger favored enemy, and against that type of enemy it doubles the studied target bonus.
