This is a fucking great video. These types of videos are usually trash, but this is useful advice and exactly the type of info i'm usually looking for but never find in these vids. Everyone who plays an rpg like this usually understands stats and builds well enough to have some common sense to apply to these games. Its the weird little ocd nuances and insight into developer intentions that is needed. Well done.

To get mercs for $500 you need to hold off on leveling from 1-2 until after protecting Olegs and at level 1 they are 500, and turning xp share off is only useful if you use less than 6 party members

Exploit: if you start the game as the premade fighter character Hedwirg, after the tutorial you can customize him (even swap portrait/voice/race/gender) into any class and attributes you want. The benefit is Hedwirg has 32 point-buy attributes, instead of the normal 25 point-buy all other player characters have. Many of his physical attributes have a higher minimum before point-buy than normal characters, so they are cheap to increase during customization, and you will still be strong even if going for a caster/diplomat instead.

Hedwirg has +2 strength as the human bonus trait, but yeah he starts with 20-15-14-13-10-10 for stats and on a 25 point buy you can only get STR to 18 while maintaining that spread. Will have to give this a try and see, thanks!

FOR NEW PLAYERS, IF YOU WANT TO GET A FEW CUSTOM COMPANIONS:: do not level up until you reach olegs , just leave the + sign there ready to level up to lvl 2, and as soon as you defeat the bandits at oleg's camp once its done run inside and talk to 8eyes or 9eyes whatever her face is , "When you are still level 1" and it only costs 500 gold , i started my last new game with 4 new characters for 2000 gold total , The gold cost doubles EVERY level to train mercenaries , i would really suggest building enough for whatever your planning at level 1 , sell everything that isnt bolted down , dont buy ANYTHING until you got your characters made, the extra skilled characters give you extra weight capacity and pay themselves off, i see it worth it to have a full 6 party instead of 3 with custom builds, even with crap weapons , at level one the chars and skills are enough to get you going, the longer you wait to build the characters, the more its gonna cost you , you may as well make all the important mercs you want at level 1 , then devote the rest to gearing them.

the price of the mercs is based on your level, if you don't level up(you can have the xp needed to level just don't go through the process of doing it) they cost 500 gold... but they will be level 1, if you are level 2 then the mercs will cost 2k and also be level 2, the cost continues to scale as you reach higher levels.

The shared xp advice is wrong. There's only a benefit if you have less than six party members. If you have six party members all companions and mercs get 1/6 of the total party xp, whether they are in the party or not. Also you can run through the prologue in about 30 minutes and get to Oleg's, beat the bandits and don't take the level up until you get your mercs for 100g each. The game says 500g, but it only charges 100g. You can get about 8 L1 mercs that way and they only lag about 2000xp behind the main character, which over the long term is meaningless.

yea i made 15 characters that way all level 1. They all level up at the same time pretty fast so i can switch out what i want or just leave them 1+ for the far future when i think of a build i want. You do have to have 500g in the inventory even though they cost about 70 gold.

Managing the camp party positions is a good thing at first and saving rations for resting in dungeons is a must. The initial main quest gives you plenty of time to complete it. Do not rush through it as you will likely loose loot, xp and some new companions. Take the time you need as you get 90 days. See where you are in the time by checking the quest log. You can remove some of the valuables of the companions will not be receiving (not so obvious on first playthrough) but you should remove all potions and scrolls form all companions if you aren't sure. Skill checks always use the highest skill level one except for persuasion which is always yours. Be sure to put some points into your persuasion skill as it will come into play.. A LOT!

Also, if you're going to hire custom companions, wait until RIGHT after you level. They aren't hired with as much exp as you have, they're hired with the bare minimum for the current level you're at. So if you're at, say, 6th level with 32k exp (almost about to reach 7th), your custom companions will be hired with 21k exp (bare minimum for 6th level). To be honest, I think the cost for custom companions needs to go WAY down. It's ridiculously and prohibitively high at the moment. Especially since they've intentionally gimped some of the companions they give you in the game.

I think you should edit this video on the part about shared XP because it is incorrect information and could seriously negatively affect people's games. With XP shared turned on all XP awards are divided by six and then added to ALL characters on your roster no matter how many there are and not just the ones currently in your party. If you use six chars in your party there is no reason to turn off shared XP and every reason not to do so. The only reason to turn off shared XP is if you use less than six chars in your party or you are going solo. Then the XP is divided equally between current party members only, so the less party members the more XP they get from each kill/quest award. The setting to turn off shared XP is designed solely for players who want to run the same undersized party throughout the game or run solo. Everyone else should leave it set to shared.

Just a heads up, the Mercenary cost is based on your level. The prices is (Level x Level)x500. So a level 1 merc costs 500, a level 2 merc costs 2,000. A level 4 Merc costs 8,000 and a level 10 Merc costs 50,000 etc. So getting them earlier is definitely better.

They also get hired with the bare minimum exp for the level your character is at, so if you're going to hire them, wait until you get close to leveling, then farm up some weak mobs to nudge yourself JUST into the next level, then go create them. It'll put them right with you in terms of exp. Otherwise, they can end up thousands of exp behind.

One thing, Ive played thru the first few chapters several times, gotten to kingdom mgmt and never once used the torches, so I am a little confused as to why they're so needed. A basic light spell will provide a 24 hour torch, ( i usually cast mine on one of the animal companions and send it ahead a few yards to scout) also, some NPC's have lanterns already You run into beings that need acid or fire to kill (tsk tsk) a 0 level acid/fire spell does the trick, there. Merc cost are based on your level at level 1 they should be 500 gold. There is currently a bug, 8eyes only takes 100 gold at level 1. Also, you are completely wrong on they way experience works for people outside of your party. The xp for people in the party is divided by the number of people in the party but the ones outside all get 1/6 the total. It is bonus xp that doesn't cost your party members anything.

It's true the game had a lot of bugs at launch, but most of the remaining bugs are at the very end of the game. So unless you're planning to put on a diaper and binge through it; the remaining bugs will be fixed before you ever get to them.

There are plenty of game breaking bugs. You can get near the end and it's impossible to finish without some sort of save editing or other form of cheating. Not to mention all of the broken quests, broken class features/feats, spellbook issues, etc etc etc. There is a big patch coming out soon. I've given up on playing until then and I would suggest waiting until then to see if the game is actually playable.

  • @Harrison11106

Yes you should get it; should you get it NOW? On that I would say "no". Most of the playthrough reviews have been for the first & 2nd chapter of the story, which are fairly stable. The bugs start to REALLY crop up with chapter 03. The other problem is that if some bug happened (positive or negative) & you save the game & it has been fixed, whatever happened to you that was caused by said bug stays. In my case it's the kingdom related stuff on my main game (I'm playing 2. 1 where I'm a Crusader, the other an Aasimar Paladin). To OwlCats credit, they ARE patching the game, & for better & worse it's fairly constant. I would say to keep an eye on the player reviews of the game & the PF: Kingmaker Steam page, specifically for how often patches seem to crop up. Hindsight being 20/20 OwlCat Games really should have waited until either later this year, or beginning of next year to drop the game. But it is what it is. I hope that the constant patches don't hurt the game too bad, no one wants to play what they feel is a "buggy mess". I'm hoping it does well, I REALLY want to see a return of D&D Sandbox style games... & this is as close as we're getting for the time-being. Sorry for the "wall O text".

I'm late here but yes! wait for a sale tho. I got it for free from epic games but on sale the base game is like $5, same with the DLC. I first got it from steam, not at launch but I guess it was still new-ish and I refunded it because of the bugs and they didn't have turn-based, and it got stuck on the loading screen forever. By the time Epic gave it away they fixed all the bugs that I know of so far (I haven't finished the game but I'm in the kingdom mode so chapter 2 I guess)

There's a spell that does it temporarily, but as for actually MAKING magic items with permanent effects, you have to find specialists (artisans) who can make them for you. I've only found one thus far for my kingdom, but have seen playthroughs where the people had at least 2 others.

Was aware of all these and I mostly only do solo runs. That being said its still a solid list, well spoken and not over the top with effects or anything like that. The only other thing that my friends were not aware of was how to turn off party member ai (with the brain at the bottom right of your action bar), they got sick of people for example casting a cantrip instead of attacking with their higher damage shortbow (despite the cantrip being a touch attack). And yeah, you can get mercs at a lower level and cost by just not levelling up until you have encountered the NPC that allows you to hire them.

Which makes it in fact worse than most of the story companions; - apart from, say, Amiri. In fact, it makes mostly sense for roles the game does not yet provide: - Druid, for example. Otherwise: Best stats is Nok-Nok as a rogue ; pretty close to Edwin (Baldur`s Gate) level. I like Jaethal, who is immortal with tons of resistances and pumped stats, although obviously for a price. Harrim can do as a "Bad Touch" cleric, Ekun is a solid ranger, Linzi looks very much like your average bard, Regongar is not terrible for a strength-based magus, Jubilost does not look too wrong for an alchemist. I do not like Tristian, Octavia`s health is outright terrible, only awaiting the one-shot. Valerie is , urm, "limited"; and Amiri can carry the early game, but has an utterly gimped main stat, while "bragging about carrying a big sword".

How to get Merc for 500 Upon entering the Trading Post and running off the first bunch of bandits you get awarded enough XP to level everyone to level 2. Level everyone EXCEPT your main character. Defend the trading post against the second wave of bandits. After the fight go rest up. In the morning your companions wil be out of group doing thier own thing. Don't level! Go down stairs and out to Oleg and sell sell sell. Hopefully you had the sense to rob your patron blind back in the first part otherwise masterworks and compound bows should get you at least 1000 gold. Go back in the tavern area and talk to eight eyes. If you are still level 1 he will only ask for 500 gold per Merc. You can now level up. The downside to this is that your Mercs will be level 1 while everyone else is level 2 and they do not level up if not in party.
